OC Transpo confident it can offset $14M in extra costs for LRT delay
Delaying the LRT opening until November will require a $14-million increase to OC Transpo’s operating expenses this year, but the transit agency says it can be covered by the savings in the LRT contract.
“The increased operating costs of full regular bus operation until the end of November, the loss of fare revenue resulting from the opening of the (LRT) line in November, and other associated costs … these increased costs will be offset by the reduced maintenance payments and -
Egan: 'I can't believe it' — mountain of ice invades cottage on Round Lake
Don Pouliot has seen many things on Round Lake since 1990, in every season. Then came Saturday, when the frozen lake came ashore, and inside.
As Ottawa was basking in glorious weather, Pouliot, 76, discovered a combination of wind and spring melt had dumped a mountain of ice on his property, breaking through the front window and into the living room in dramatic fashion.
It looked as though a bulldozer or giant ice machine had poured hundreds of ice blocks indoors, shoving the furniture aside and -

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson said he had an interesting encounter with an “idiot” on the street on Tuesday evening.
As Ottawa prepares to welcome busloads of protesters in a controversial annual pro-life demonstration, the mayor posted on Twitter that he encountered a man on Bank Street tearing down posters advertising the pro-choice counter-protest.

NCC agrees to plant more trees in Mud Lake trail it 'clear-cut'
The National Capital Commission has agreed to return a forest trail it “clear-cut” in Mud Lake to something like its original condition.
A contractor cut a wide swath along a forest trail in January. On paper, it was a plan to remove dead ash trees that might fall on someone, but neighbours soon found the resulting trail was as wide as a road.
It was also covered with chipped-up wood from the cut trees — environmentally friendly, the NCC argued, but the neighbours weren’t -

Kanata Tory called for privatized health care, Liberals charge
The Progressive Conservatives would cut public health care in Ontario in favour of a two-tier system that would give better care to people who could pay for it themselves, the provincial Liberals charged Wednesday, citing extensive tweets from the Tory candidate in Kanata-Carleton.
“Protecting our publicly funded health care system is about protecting the people it serves and the idea that underpins it,” Ottawa South Liberal incumbent John Fraser said, in a news conference on a pathw -
Glavin: The Iran deal didn't make the world safer
As President Donald Trump made good on his threat to pull the United States out of the 2013 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on Iran’s nuclear weapons program on Tuesday, life in Iran trundled on in its usual, dreary way. The price of bread, eggs and meat did not stop rising. As the sun rose, you needed 60,000 rials to buy a single American dollar on the black market. At sunset, the price was the same.
In January, 2016, more than two years into the deal that former president Barack Obama -

Glorious day for yoga sun salutations at City Hall before the rain returns
In a sure sign that summer is on the way, Parliament Hill Yoga is back – even if it has moved to Ottawa City Hall for the day.
And there’s plenty of sunshine to salute along with a high of 25 C and a low of 14 C.
“All you need to bring is a mat, water, and a great attitude!” say organizers of the Wednesday yoga sessions from noon to 1 p.m. Throw in some sunscreen, too, with a UV index of 7 or high.

Gord Brown a pleasure to work with
Re: Federal Conservative MP Gord Brown dead at 57, May 2.
As a volunteer who worked in Gord Brown’s election office on many of his campaigns, I would like to say it was a pleasure working with Gord. He showed up on several occasions with a box of Timbits and his usual smile and personality to thank everyone for helping him out.
He will be missed.
