Reevely: Ford promises grievance-based education policy for Ontario
The Ontario Progressive Conservatives would bring back a 20-year-old health curriculum for elementary schools, police free speech on university campuses and somehow fix math instruction, leader Doug Ford announced in one big go on Tuesday morning.
“I want an education system that respects parents and focuses on the fundamentals,” Ford said. “Unfortunately, under Kathleen Wynne, our schools have been turned into social laboratories and our kids into test subjects for whatever sp -
Dramatic emergency test deemed a success at Ottawa airport
A dramatic emergency exercise held Monday night to test the Ottawa airport’s emergency response plan has been deemed “a success.”
The airport authority said Tuesday the exercise scenario involved a vehicle attack and perpetrator running through the terminal with a weapon causing multiple casualties, and culminated with the assailant threatening to detonate an explosive device.
The scenario took six months to develop and was led by the airport authority’s security and emer -

What's new for Ontario's 2018 election
Regardless of how Ottawa voters cast their ballots on June 7, there is guaranteed to be at least one new area MPP at Queen’s Park.
That politician will represent a new riding, Nepean, hived off as part of a redrawing of Ontario’s electoral boundaries that adds 17 new seats to the legislature. Most of the new ridings are in urban areas, mainly around Toronto, but two are in Northern Ontario. The new ridings mean Ontarians will elect 124 MPPs, up from 107 in the past session.

Thyme and Again opens 2nd location
On the opening day for Thyme & Again’s second location, owner Sheila Whyte looked at one of the building’s exterior walls and disclosed what was missing — hops.
Whyte’s not sure what her long-established catering and take-home food company will do with the quick-growing plants that will soon scale the wall, but she does know that they’re a must. “We want to pay homage,” she says.
Left unsaid, but understood, is the fact that the second Thyme &a -

Cohen: John McCain, honest, heroic, patriotic
WASHINGTON – John McCain is dying. He is slipping away, slowly, with clarity and courage. In his long, feverish life nothing has become him, as Shakespeare said, like the leaving it.
This is not yet a deathwatch. Those who have seen him recently at his ranch in Sedona, Arizona are measured in their words. In discussing his condition, they speak cheerfully. They treat his last passage with respect.
All we know is that he has stage-four brain cancer, he has had surgery and treatment, and he -

Denley: The real losers in the debate: Ontarians
Well, that was depressing. The Ontario election’s first leadership debate was more like an episode of the Jerry Springer show than a serious political discussion.
Doug Ford, Kathleen Wynne and Andrea Horwath spent much of the evening talking over each other, exaggerating their opponents’ defects and making dubious assertions, and yet, in just over a month one of them will be our premier.
Partisans of all three parties will claim their leader won the debate, as they always do, but it& -

House Works: How to paint masonry
If you’re thinking of painting some of the bricks and masonry in your life, there’s more to a good job than just sloshing on some colour. You probably won’t need to paint masonry often, but when you do you need to get it right.

Woodfinden: Members of Parliament deserve more independence
Recently, Conservative member of Parliament Maxime Bernier released a chapter from his now-defunct book, in which he blamed “fake conservatives” for his loss to Andrew Scheer, and reiterated his opposition to Canada’s dairy cartel.
Criticism was visceral, and after a caucus meeting, Bernier announced that, “for the sake of maintaining harmony within our party,” he was pulling the book from publication.
Academics and activists alike have long observed the extreme pow -
'Too many accidents': Russian scientist says she faces grave danger if Canada denies refugee bid
This is a story about a Russian scientist and vocal critic of the Putin government who collected evidence of environmental disaster in Siberia and is now seeking asylum in Canada.
It’s a convoluted tale that sounds like something out of a Cold War novel. The veracity of some of the events in question are impossible to independently confirm. The story involves sensitive information about military installations and industrial polluters, the mysterious deaths of a half dozen other peopl -

Samulack: How we can do more to support bereaved parents
In March, Ottawa Senators’ captain Erik Karlsson and his wife, Melinda, experienced the stillbirth of their son, Axel. Melinda described her experience recently on Instagram: “Grief is the price we pay for caring, for loving. I experienced a love so strong that it made the incredibly impossible task of saying hello and goodbye in the same day worth it.”
Unfortunately, pregnancy and infant loss is something that the Karlssons, my family and countless other Canadians have experie -
