Ottawa buyer frustrated by 15-month delay in condo move-in date
An Ottawa retiree is furious that a Stittsville condo she purchased and was supposed to have moved into last July is still not built and likely won’t be finished until September.
In the meantime, Susan Tomac-Brennan is renting a room in a friend’s basement and has been unable sign a lease for better accommodation. All the while, the cost of her storage locker keeps mounting.
But while the builder has made and then broken promises, Phoenix Homes hasn’t broke any rules. Despite 1 -
Kurl: Canadians are now confronting how generous we really are
This is soon to be our summer of our discontent, disagreement and discomfort, as Canadians watch increasing numbers of people claiming asylum try their luck at undesignated border crossings
Discontent over Justin Trudeau’s government’s handling of the file. Disagreement over how it should be handled, and discomfort over the realization that despite the often-proffered narrative of Canada’s endless, unconditional welcome of newcomers, we’re wary to say the least, abou -
Today's letters: The cycling debate begins for another season
Drivers owe cyclists some respect
It is early in the season but I cannot help it. Again, another vehicle-bicycle conflict. What I would really like to see changed, however, is the approach that vehicle drivers take to bicycle drivers.
The incident (among a sad and enormous number) that encouraged this letter was an encounter with a pick-up truck driven by a young man on April 29 at the corner of Pleasant Park and Lynda Lane where I was cycling towards Alta Vista. The pick-up and I stopped at the -
Orchard: Why are we doing the Kinder Morgan kowtow?
A thousand years ago, the Chinese Middle Kingdom regarded the regions around it as being made up of barbarians. These areas were either controlled by Chinese military power or regarded as satellites. The custom, and the rule, was that the barbarians had to recognize the imperial supremacy of China. This was done by performing the kowtow (three kneelings and nine prostrations) or by paying tribute.
Faced with the Kinder Morgan pipeline company, Canada is doing both, allowing itself to be given de -

Web of familiar faces connects government with online giants
As conversations unfold in this country about internet privacy and the taxation of online corporations, there is a web of current and former federal Liberals in influential positions.
A review by this newspaper has highlighted several human connections between the governing party of Canada and the internet giants that are steadily lobbying it. The analysis shows no wrongdoing, but may point to the nature of lobbying for governments and industry on hot-button files across all political spect -
Theatre review: Up to Low has universal appeal
Up To Low
By Brian Doyle, adapted and directed by Janet Irwin
NAC English Theatre production
To May 19, Babs Asper Theatre, National Arts Centre
Tickets and times: nac-cna.ca
For Ottawa-area audiences, part of the charm of the theatrical adaptation of Up to Low, by Ottawa author Brian Doyle, is that it’s based on a road trip in our own backyard. Set in 1950, the tale takes us from the city’s Lowertown neighbourhood to a family cabin in Low, a classic example of the time-honoured Cana -

Police identify Ottawa shooting victim
Police have identified the man who was found in a pool of blood on the shoulder of Russell Road.
An autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound but “no clear motive has been established,” Staff Sgt. Bruce Pirt of the major crime unit reported.
Police have not determined whether there’s a gang element to the shooting that took the life of Opiny P’Ochieng, 49, Pirt said.

MacLeod praises Ford, pledges 'one Nepean' at campaign launch
Conservative incumbent MPP Lisa MacLeod kicked off her fifth campaign Sunday, packing a former Barrhaven pub for a celebrity-studded rally where she declared that “we are one Nepean” even as her party weathered a weekend bombshell.
Before hundreds of people jammed her strip mall headquarters she praised leader Doug Ford’s “strong leadership” and “decisive action” in ditching social conservative former leadership hopeful Tanya Granic Allen as a candidate.
