Detectives report progress in probe of Ottawa's 12th homicide
It was a turbulent night on typically tranquil Dwight Crescent.
First neighbours were kept awake by raging winds that bent and broke fences separating their backyards from busy Russell Road.
Then they were awoken in the wee hours of Saturday morning by the strobe of lights as police arrived at the scene of a homicide.
A pool of dried blood was on the west shoulder of highrise-lined Russell Road near Southvale Crescent just outside one family’s back gate in the city’s southe -

Watch the beautiful trailer for The Butterfly Child – a documentary about Jonathan Pitre
“A wave gets bigger and bigger. I want to make sure that… when I leave, the wave is big enough to keep going on its own.”
Jonathan Pitre, even though he suffered through the pain of epidermolysis bullosa, wanted nothing more than to make a difference.
To inspire others.
Even though he passed away nearly a month ago, Jonathan is not finished setting an example.
Tina Boileau, Jonathan’s strong, loving and devoted mother, tweeted earlier this week that the first traile -

Erik Karlsson weighs in on NHL licking controversy
Boston’s Brad Marchand, one of the best forwards in the NHL, has an unfortunate penchant for licking opposing players during games.

The secret to getting out of a ticket in Ottawa? Let a tree fall on your car
Hydro crews and homeowners are still working to clean up after yesterday’s major windstorm.
For others, like by-law enforcement officers, it’s life-as-normal.
Or close to it.
Kitchissippi ward’s Jeff Leiper tweeted out this photo on Saturday morning:

Hydro suppliers preach patience as windstorm leaves thousands in region powerless
Hydro officials on both sides of the Ottawa River continued to preach patience Saturday as thousands of clients remained without power following Friday night’s massive windstorm.
At the height of the storm, between 40,000 and 50,000 clients were without power, Hydro Ottawa said.
By about 10 a.m., a few thousand remained powerless in Ottawa, predominantly in the Bells Corners and West Kanata/Stittsville areas.
There were pockets elsewhere throughout the city and, in many cases, there -

Piché and Doyle: There are many alternatives to a bigger jail
A year ago, without consulting the public, the Ontario government announced a new jail will replace the 585-bed Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre.
At 725-beds, the new facility will cost $500 million to $1 billion to design, build, finance and maintain. This new jail will be 25 per cent bigger and will also cost approximately $30,000 a day – $11 million a year – more to operate than OCDC.

Adam: Why Doug Ford might not need to pitch a platform
Several commentators have taken Progressive Conservative leader Doug Ford to task – as they should – for not releasing a fully costed platform, even as what could well be a seminal provincial election gets closer and closer.
Party platforms are important because they define vision and direction – and give voters a road map to the future. When competing parties lay out their platforms and vision, and explain in detail what they’ll do in government, they give voters a -

Ernesto Falbo puts away the clippers: 'I would say he's the best barber in town'
Business will carry on at Ernesto’s Barber Shop, but will do so without the man it was named after. Ernesto Falbo hung up his clippers on Friday after keeping heads neat and tidy in the Glebe for nearly 50 years.
