It’s probably no surprise, but Canada 150 brought the greatest number of tourists to Ottawa on record — more than 11 million of them.
That’s an increase of 8.8 per cent over the previous year.
The visitors left more than $2.3 billion behind them when they went home, an increase of about 10 per cent.
Increases were strong among Canadians (who are the biggest group of visitors each year), Americans, and overseas visitors.
Facebook and Twitter traffic were also up.

Antiques: Excellent timing and high value for old clock with Chinese decoration
Q: I recently acquired this clock that apparently came from England nearly 100 years ago. I know that during the 1700s and early 1800s England traded extensively with the Orient. One result was that things Chinese were popular in England, and even English manufacturers copied Chinese imports. This tall case clock is 240 cm high (95 inches) and painted red with Chinese scenes and designs done in enamel and gilt. The brass arch top dial has the name JOHN SAUNDERS, LONDON inscribed. There is a stri -

Highway 401 was down to one lane in two spots in Eastern Ontario Thursday after separate collisions.
Detours were in place overnight but one lane reopened Thursday morning eastbound at the Maitland Road exit between Brockville and Prescott and westbound between Brookdale Avenue and Moulinette Road near Cornwall.

'Multibillion-dollar industry with almost no oversight': Tougher fertility regulations on the way
Could tougher regulations around the use and handling of donor sperm have prevented the fallout devastating former clients of Dr. Norman Barwin’s Broadview Fertility Clinic?
It is difficult to say, but at the very least tighter rules might have limited the damage. And they are badly needed in Canada, experts in the field argue.
In fact, a series of standards developed by the Canadian Standards Association, which would tighten rules around sperm and egg banks, have been accepted by the Onta -
On gratitude, thinking too much and Dylan: Carleton's new president takes our personality quiz
Carleton University’s new president, Benoit-Antoine Bacon, has a PhD in psychology and has spent his career studying the mysteries of cognitive neuroscience.
He’s also a good sport. Bacon, who will leave his job as vice-principal and provost at Queen’s University to take the top job at Carleton, agreed to take a quiz designed to reveal a person’s true nature. The questions were originally popularized by French novelist Marcel Proust.
Here are Bacon’s answers:

Journalist charged in criminal, civil courts wins press freedom prize
The first Canadian journalist to face both criminal and civil charges for his reporting has won a press freedom award.
Justin Brake, an APTN reporter, followed Indigenous protesters into Muskrat Falls, a controversial hydroelectric project being constructed in Labrador that has made some worried about its potential effects on the Innu and Inuit peoples who live downstream.
The award was announced Thursday by the Canadian Committee for World Press Freedom.
At the time, in October 2016, Brake -
Get ready for a very wet couple of days
As much as 30 mm of rain is forecast to end the week but the light at the end of the dismal tunnel is a sunny Saturday.

Barwin's babies: The remarkable story of a disgraced Ottawa fertility doctor and those who say they are his children
Kat Palmer always knew she was a Barwin baby.
It was a matter of pride in her family that Dr. Norman Barwin, Ottawa’s renowned fertility doctor and baby whisperer, had helped her parents conceive after years of trying.
As members of Ottawa’s tight-knit Jewish community, they sometimes ran into the doctor at events while she was growing up.
“My parents were so grateful to this man. My dad would bring me over and say: ‘We are so thankful to him because he gave us you.&rsquo -
'It felt like something had been taken from me': Family copes with fallout from Barwin clinic bombshell
Lisa Yull and her ex-husband had tried to get pregnant for five years before meeting someone who helped them get in to see Dr. Norman Barwin.
“We were pretty excited, because he is the baby god. If anyone could get you pregnant, he was the one who did it.”
After several tries in which Yull was given drugs to encourage ovulation before her husband’s sperm was injected, they succeeded.
“We were over the moon.”
That was in 1998. Their healthy blond baby girl, Taylor Pa -

Adams: Press freedom, like liberal democracy, is struggling
As of last December, there were 262 journalists in prison for their journalistic work, according to the Committee for the Protection of Journalists. Looking at the previous week on the CPJ website as I write, I see the following news alerts:
• Four journalists jailed in Sudan: two for “false news” and two for defamation;
• Egyptian authorities lash out at the media, block websites, and threaten retaliation, in part over stories of electoral irregularities;
• 10 Palesti -
