Reevely: Ontario's next government will have $15B budget hole to fill by 2025, watchdog warns
Younger Ontarians will be stuck paying off much more provincial debt than the Ontario Liberals are letting on, the province’s budget watchdog warned Wednesday, unless whoever wins the June election makes deep service cuts or raises taxes sharply.
The 2018 budget promises deficits of more than $6 billion for several years to come (or more, if you use different accounting standards demanded by the provincial auditor general, which the Liberals don’t). It also includes forecasts saying -

Sadie Mae, the beagle that defied the odds by surviving a gunshot wound after she was found suffering on a Carp trail last fall, has found a “forever home.”
The Ottawa Humane Society shared an update from the 12-year-old dog’s new adoptive family.
“We are almost a week in. Lil miss is so amazing. She has settled and taken charge. What a lovely dog,” reads the post, shared Wednesday by the OHS, who did not divulge the identity of the family.

Live at Upstairs (Effendi Records)Alex Francoeur Group
No points for guessing correctly where Montreal saxophonist Alex Francoeur will be tonight when he launches his debut album.
The recent McGill University grad’s first recording is called Live at Upstairs, and naturally, he’ll be celebrating its release at Upstairs, the veteran Montreal jazz venue where its music was recorded last fall.
The disc is a quintet album, featuring Francoeur and his burly, advanced tenor joined by four e -

In deciding an appropriate sentence in the case, Justice Calum MacLeod had to consider dramatically different recommendations from the Crown and defence.

New research centre a 'game changer' for neuromuscular disease patients
Ottawa neurologist Dr. Jodi Warman Chardon recalls seeing patients with neuromuscular diseases — including muscular dystrophy, ALS and others — getting on the train to Montreal to take part in clinical trials not available in Ottawa. Some had to travel much farther.
The image has stayed with her.
“So many people are desperate to participate in clinical trials,” she said. It made her realize more must be done to help make therapies and research available to Ottawa patients -

National Gallery of Canada and its director remain tight-lipped about Chagall painting's future
At his first public appearance following the decision by the National Gallery of Canada’s board of trustees not to sell Marc Chagall’s La Tour Eiffel after all, gallery director and CEO Marc Mayer declined Wednesday morning to say much at all about the painting — except that he doesn’t know where it is.

Weighty peregrine falcon sculpture vanishes from bridge: Artist
Weighing about 30 kilograms, this peregrine falcon didn’t just fly away.
Artist Christopher Griffin said Wednesday that one of three concrete sculptures of the regal birds that had been installed on the west side of the Dunbar Bridge on Bronson Avenue had vanished.
He discovered it was gone after getting an e-mail from a concerned citizen. Griffin than visited the site to find the stainless steel bracket that had mounted the bird to the bridge snapped off at the weld.

Transportation committee likes recommended route for Kanata LRT
The transportation committee is recommending council approve the proposed route for a $1.85-billion LRT extension through Kanata.
During a committee meeting Wednesday, Kanata North Coun. Marianne Wilkinson, who’s retiring after this term of council, called on the city to plug the Kanata LRT plan into the next transportation master plan. An LRT extension to the western suburb “is desperately needed,” she said, adding that an hour-and-a-half is too long for people to take a bus d -

Goose nests in a 'tricky' spot on Queensway
A Canada goose has picked an unlikely, and potentially dangerous, spot to nest: A grassy strip next to screaming Queensway traffic.
The mother was sitting atop a nest of eggs next to the eastbound lanes just before the Woodroffe Avenue exit during Wednesday’s morning commute when a Citizen intern snapped this picture.
Safe Wings Ottawa has been fielding concerned calls about the animal, volunteer Anouk Hoedeman said. Some callers have reported seeing both the male and the female -

There's singing, kidding and storytelling during Lunch At Allen's
OWEN SOUND — For 15 years, Ian Thomas and friends Murray McLauchlan, Cindy Church and Marc Jordan have played each others songs together, kidded around, told stories and included audiences in the fun.

McLauchlan put this group of influential Canadian musicians together, with Church, a country -

Denley: Fixing long-term care – without hurling money at it
It’s great to see Ontario political parties finally focusing on the health and housing needs of seniors.
The problem is the parties’ bidding war over who can build the most long-term care beds is a slow and expensive partial solution that won’t benefit most seniors.
Ontario does need more long-term beds, and the big payback will be clearing hospital beds that are occupied by people waiting for long-term care. That will make our hospitals and emergency rooms run more efficiently -

Historic Victoria Cross of Lt.-Col. David Currie to stay in Canada
One of the most significant Victoria Crosses in Canadian military history will stay in Canada.
The medal, the Commonwealth’s highest honour for valour in the face of the enemy, was awarded to Lt.-Col. David Vivian Currie for his role in the bloody fighting in the Falaise Pocket in the months after D-Day.
A foreign collector bought Currie’s VC at a private auction in London, England, last September for $660,000, including a $110,000 auction house fee.
But because the medal was conside -

House Works: Your questions on eavestrough, winter-proofing piping, HRVs
Anchoring eavestroughs
Q: What’s the best way to install aluminum eavestrough? All I’ve ever seen is a flimsy spike system. It leaves the eavestrough weak and easily damaged. Is there something better?
The T-Rex eavestrough anchoring system is one of the strongest options available. The perforated top also keeps out leaves and debris.
A: There’s not a whole lot of options for anchoring standard eavestrough, but there is one I really like. My favourite, by far, is something call -

With the Ottawa River rising, officials in Gatineau started handing out sandbags Tuesday to Aylmer residents affected by what was expected to be minor flooding compared to last spring’s deluge.
But the Ottawa River Regulating Committee warned Wednesday that level and flows on the Ottawa River are expected to increase significantly this week due to rising temperatures and rain.
As of Wednesday morning, the City of Gatineau reported that the water level in the Aylmer sector was 59. -

Boswell: Loss of John A. Macdonald's possible birthplace is a scandal
A long-vacant building in downtown Glasgow has been demolished to make way for a major commercial-residential development described as key to revitalizing the heart of the Scottish city.
The removal of the derelict structure — once the home of the popular Mitre bar, the Fox and Hound pub and an upstairs massage parlour — would be unremarkable except for one thing: It may have been the place where John A. Macdonald was born.
It’s a shame the place has been levelled, worse that i -

The high is 22 C but will feel more like 25 with the humidity.

Today's letters: Helping seniors, keeping Chagall
This bill would help our seniors
On March 22, I introduced a Private Member’s Bill at Queen’s Park entitled the Insurance Amendment Act 2018 (Bill 20). This Act would amend the Ontario Insurance Act to allow the owner of a life insurance policy to use his or her life insurance policy as collateral for a loan. This legislation would let life insurance policy owners use their life insurance policies in the same way as they can use any other property they might own. I am hoping that oth -

Ordeal for grieving parents once threatened with legal action by Canadian Forces now over
In October 2014, the Ottawa Citizen published an article about how the Canadian military threatened the grieving parents of a soldier who committed suicide. The parents faced legal sanctions if they did not turn over documents they had collected in their attempts to get to the bottom of their daughter’s death.
Both Rick and Ellen Rogers received a summons in July 2013 to testify at the military board of inquiry into the death of their daughter, Lt. Shawna Rogers, who had been statione -
