Reevely: Ottawa's LRT plan survives a trip through Ontario leaders' BS machine
The Progressive Conservatives will contribute the $1 billion in provincial money Ottawa needs for the next phase of its light-rail plans, leader Doug Ford promised publicly on Tuesday.
He was answering a warning from Liberal leader Kathleen Wynne that money her government has promised for years isn’t locked in, a mundane statement of fact that blew up into an election issue thanks to political spin, a quick headline and the fact we have about half a dozen elections in the time it takes to -
Sir John A. Macdonald's first home demolished in Glasgow as condos and retail space planned
The presumed birthplace of Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada’s founding prime minister, has been demolished as part of a long-awaited redevelopment in downtown Glasgow.
A spokesman for Glasgow City Council confirmed Tuesday that the derelict two-storey structure, which was last home to the Fox and Hound Pub, was razed in September 2017.
The loss of the historic site was first discovered by Carleton University professor Randy Boswell, whose sleuthing helped to make the case that Macdonald -
Quebec police launch task force to investigate possible serial sex crimes
Quebec police have assembled a task force to investigate a 55-year-old man suspected of serial sex crimes across three jurisdictions in the province.
Clément Péloquin, 55, of Chénéville, appeared in Gatineau court in March, where he was charged with a range of sex crimes involving minors, including sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching and sexual exploitation of persons under 14.
He was released from custody with a list of court-imposed conditions.

Shopify shares tumble 5 per cent as earnings forecast prompts jitters
Shopify shares tumbled five per cent to $163.50 on the TSX on Tuesday as investors absorbed the Ottawa firm’s latest financial forecasts.
Although the electronic commerce specialist delivered better-than-expected results for the quarter ended March 31, it signalled revenues for the current quarter would be just two to three per cent better than the consensus forecast, prompting an early morning sell-off.
While on the face of it, this seems an odd reaction, Shopify shares have in recent mon -
Re-election campaign begins for Ottawa's 'not very flashy' incumbent mayor
Ottawa voters probably shouldn’t expect any surprises from Jim Watson during the municipal election campaign.
He’ll make a tax promise and continue to advocate for the city’s LRT plan. He’ll urge people to vote for stability on a mayoral ballot that, so far, has only one big-name candidate.
“My promises are not very flashy. I’m not very flashy myself,” the incumbent mayor said after filing his nomination papers Tuesday at the city’s election -
Historic Victoria Cross of Lt.-Col David Currie to stay in Canada
One of the most significant Victoria Crosses in Canadian military history will stay in Canada.
The medal, the Commonwealth’s highest honour for valour in the face of the enemy, was awarded to Lt.-Col David Vivian Currie for his role in the bloody fighting in the Falaise Pocket in the months after D-Day.
A foreign collector bought Currie’s VC at a private auction in London, England last September for $550,000, plus an additional $110,000 auction house fee.
But because the medal was co -

5 things: Confederation Line LRT will have the longest transit escalator in Canada
Here’s the most understated wow feature of the Confederation Line LRT: It will have the longest escalator associated with a transit system in Canada. It wasn’t until Tuesday that this even came up.
John Manconi, the city’s general manager of transportation, told the finance and economic development committee that the escalator is being installed in Rideau Station, whose LRT platform is 26.5 metres underground.
Manconi delivered his monthly update on LRT construction to the comm -
Warrant issued after Ottawa man skips U.S. arraignment on assault, hate crime charges
An arrest warrant has been issued in the U.S. for Brandon Vaughan of Ottawa after he failed to show up in a Washington, D.C., courtroom to face charges of assault and hate crime.
Vaughan, 23, was to have been appeared on a felony arraignment Tuesday morning for his alleged role in the beating of a Palestinian man at a March 2017 demonstration in Washington.
With Vaughan a no-show, the court issued a bench warrant for his arrest, said William Miller, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Justice -

High wire and high culture mix in Circa: Opus
If the term new Australian circus evokes visions of Crocodile Dundee in a cage match with a kangaroo while koalas do high wire tricks, think again.
Circa — “circus that moves the heart, mind and soul” — is coming to town.
The Brisbane-based troupe was founded by director Yaron Lifschitz in 1987. For more than 30 years, its unique approach to presenting circus arts alongside high concept design has left audiences stunned.

Here's what Chagall's granddaughter had to say about the near-sale of La Tour Eiffel
One of Marc Chagall’s grandchildren on Tuesday called the National Gallery of Canada’s decision to keep the late painter’s La Tour Eiffel in its collection a win for democracy, and hoped the work would soon be displayed on the gallery’s walls.
“We are, as are most people, relieved by the decision,” said Meret Meyer, who is also vice-president of the Marc Chagall Committee in Paris, which upholds the late Russian-French painter’s reputation.

Domestic dispute call leads Kingston police to child in marijuana grow-op
When they were called to a domestic disturbance on Monday, Kingston police discovered about 30 marijuana plants and a child who was apparently being babysat in a grow-op.
A 22-year-old man is charged with unlawful production of a controlled substance.
Police were called to the west-end home at about 12:30 p.m. and spoke with the suspect and a woman. Neither would cooperate with police beyond saying there had been an argument.
But officers did learn that the woman was babysitting and went to chec -

Sharp decline in size of Afghan security forces, says new U.S. report
The U.S. government’s Afghan watchdog agency, the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction, has updated Congress on the situation in that country. Here are the key findings in the latest report:
— USFOR-A reported that the actual assigned strength of the ANDSF as of January 2018 was 296,409, which includes 165,622 ANA and 130,787 ANP personnel. These figures represent a sharp decline in strength from the same period last year: the ANA saw a 4,818-person decrease, and -
Cohen: Why we ought to worry about democracy's retreat globally
Justice Rosalie Abella of the Supreme Court of Canada lives on public platforms. She lectures often, at home and abroad, and collects laurels celebrating her shimmering career (including 38 honorary degrees) like loose change.
As a decorated jurist of 42 years, she contemplates law and society as a quotidian challenge. So there she was two weeks ago, at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, on the 70th anniversary of the founding of Israel, addressing the country’s democracy.

Ottawa man charged with arson of Northern Ontario motel room
This guest apparently did not enjoy his stay.
A 27-year-old Ottawa man is behind bars more than 1,300 km from home after the OPP alleges he torched his Nipigon motel room before being collared as he walked out of town.
Nipigon OPP reports that officers were called to a local motel at about 6:20 a.m. Sunday. Firefighters made sure that the fire was out after the flames, which were confined to a single room, were put out with the establishment’s extinguishers. Damage was extensive.

Jean Chrétien: Why the world celebrates the Aga Khan
His Highness the Aga Khan is visiting Canada this month as part of an international celebration of his 60th, or “Diamond Jubilee,” anniversary as spiritual leader of the world’s Ismaili Muslims. I’ll be delighted to join past and present Canadian leaders of all political stripes in celebrations of his remarkable six decades of leadership.
Frankly, the visit also affords us all an opportunity to turn the page from domestic political squabbles to what’s really importa -
