Shhh…agall: National Gallery CEO silent as questions surface about Chagall debacle
As art lovers await the reappearance of painter Marc Chagall’s La Tour Eiffel in the National Gallery of Canada’s collection, those involved in the now-scuttled plan to sell the masterpiece next month at a New York auction are keeping very, very quiet.
On Monday, the gallery’s director and CEO, Marc Mayer, remained unavailable for interviews, and did not reply to emailed questions. He has been silent since last Thursday night’s announcement from the gallery’s board -
Mud Lake to have some trees replanted after extensive cutting
A trail through Mud Lake’s forest is going to get a lot of new planting to replace a swath of trees and shrubs cut during the winter, but it won’t all come this year.
The National Capital Commission says it’s going to start by planting 75 new trees this year, and there will be more in future years but it doesn’t yet know how many.
As well, it is promising to spread out — but not remove — the thick layer of wood pieces that was spread on the area after th -

Reevely: Province gives billions to private companies without checking whether the money does anything
The Ontario government spends more than $1 billion a year on subsidies and tax credits for businesses without even trying to figure out whether they work, Ontario’s financial-accountability office reported Monday.
Its accountants took 12 of the province’s dozens of programs for promoting things like the film and TV business, industry in the north and more apprenticeships in the trades, and asked whether anybody checks on their results.
Same answer for all 12 of the programs they look -

Ottawa man, 27, charged with arson after motel room fire
An Ottawa man has been charged with arson after a fire on Sunday tore through a motel room in Nipigon, about 100 kilometres northeast of Thunder Bay.
Ontario Provincial Police said they received information about the fire around 6:20 a.m. The blaze, which was contained to a single room at the motel, was doused with fire extinguishers, but not before it caused “extensive damage.”
OPP allege the fire was intentionally set. Police said they found the occupant of the motel room walking o -

Beautiful spring weather to start the week
After a cold, wet weekend, Ottawa is heading into a string of warm and mostly sunny days — just in time for most people to go back to work.
The forecast calls for highs of 22 C on Tuesday and 23 C on Wednesday. If you’re counting (and we are) these will be the first days to break the 22-degree mark since last Oct. 21.
Monday won’t be quite that nice, but it’s still an improvement on the weekend. The forecast high is 16 C with a mix of sunshine and possibly some passing sh -
Today's letters: Carp fitness, pipeline support and an outdoor field
Rural areas deserve fitness classes, too, argues one letter-writer, while another insists the Liberals cannot support Kinder Morgan and fight climate change. You, too, can weigh in. Write to us at: [email protected] deserves to have more fitness classes
I thought the City of Ottawa was pushing participation.
The city doesn’t seem to recognize that smaller communities require fitness classes as well as large suburban areas. In Carp, we only have two classes offered at Carp -
'I can't afford it': Owners outraged after monthly payments double at Ottawa condo
Joumana Azzi says she could barely believe her eyes when she saw it: her monthly condo payments were about to double, thanks to $2.3 million in repairs needed for two buildings on Southvale Crescent.
News of the levy, she said, brought other neighbours at a meeting about the cost to tears, describing how they might have to turn their keys over to the bank or take out a loan. Some talked about selling their units.
With less than two months’ notice, residents of 85 units at 2630 and 2650 Sou -
Chambers: Part-time professors should be paid based on merit
At a university, “equal pay for equal work” suggests the need to rectify the gender wage gap.
Yet for part-time professors, it does not reflect reality. In their specific circumstances, “equal pay for equal position” is a more accurate maxim: Part-time professors are paid the same amount per contract, irrespective of work ethic, skill set or student outcomes.
If universities are truly interested in improving educational standards, the focus needs to shift towards “e -
Claus: Chagall affair leaves many questions
The scandal over the National Gallery of Canada’s decision to auction off Marc Chagall’s luminous 1929 painting, La Tour Eiffel, raises many questions, including of how the gallery managed to get the required export permit in the first place.
Since the gallery has announced the cancellation of its controversial sale of the Chagall painting, the many who expressed vocal disagreement can heave a sigh of relief knowing that their voices were heard and views acted upon.
However, it is st -
Science and Tech Museum's new building is a football field smaller than needed
The Canada Science and Technology Museum’s new storage building, still under construction, is 8,000 square metres too small, official documents reveal.
That’s a shortfall of more than a Canadian football field, which is 6,000 square metres from goal-line to goal-line (though normally measured in yards).
The new Collections and Conservation Centre costs $156.4 million. But documents obtained through access to information show that it fell victim to two forces: rising costs that forced -

Scanlan: Battle in the burbs is on against the scourge of opioids
Drug abuse isn’t wrongly perceived to be an inner-city problem.
That’s where Ottawa’s drug culture is most visible — it’s the natural home of supervised injection sites. Yet risky behaviour, especially opioid use, is trending in Kanata and other well-off neighbourhoods.
News recently of the suspected death by overdose of 18-year-old Cole Nicholls, who is from the city’s rural west end, underscored the fact that the opioid crisis knows no boundaries.

Kanata parent stands on guard in relentless opioid battle
It’s been more than a year since Sean O’Leary’s open letter about opioid abuse in Kanata sparked the formation of a parents’ group and open war on youth overdoses.
The battle rages on. O’Leary, who had to provide opioid withdrawal treatment in his own home for his then-16 year-old daughter, still meets with the ‘We the Parents’ group. Their next gathering is Monday. He still lives in fear.
“One of the things I have found, most people just want some -
