Some mothers who give birth at Montfort Hospital will now have the option of heading home early where they and their newborn will get house calls from a midwife.
Funding for the first program of its kind in Canada — a hybrid of physician-assisted birth and midwife postpartum care — is part of an expansion of midwifery services across the city announced Saturday.

RCAF CP-140 to be involved in counter-smuggling mission aimed at North Korea
Canada will send a surveillance aircraft to join international efforts to counter maritime smuggling by North Korea.
A CP-140 aircraft and 40 military personnel are assigned to a base in Kadena, Japan for the mission. The Canadian military deployment will join ongoing counter-smuggling efforts by Britain and the U.S.
In addition, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said his country is sending a P-8 surveillance aircraft to operate with the Canadians and British at the U.S. base in Japan. -

Man, 20, arrested, loaded rifle seized in west end raid
A 20-year-old Ottawa man is under arrest after police seized a loaded, “modified” rifle in a west end raid Saturday morning.
The joint raid by the guns and gangs unit and DART unit occurred at an apartment on Ramsey Crescent in the Forest Farm neighbourhood at about 8 a.m.
A small quantity of unspecified drugs was also seized.

Man suffers smoke inhalation in Vanier fire
One man suffered mild smoke inhalation in one of two early morning fires Saturday.
Ottawa firefighters were called to the scene at 321 Shakespeare St., near Ste. Anne Avenue, in Vanier at about 5:30 a.m.
The fire was contained to one unit in the multi-unit structure and firefighters were able to control the blaze quickly.
A resident was treated for smoke inhalation at the scene.

Two men stabbed in Gatineau altercation, four arrested
Four men are in custody, including one from Ottawa, following the stabbing of two other men early Saturday during an altercation in the Old Hull sector.
The victims, aged 18 and 27, were wounded in a confrontation on Leduc Street at about 2:30 a.m.

Due to water system malfunction, 12 trucks required to put out blaze in Gatineau
What should have been a routine fire call turned into a 12-truck affair in east Gatineau on Friday evening.
A breakdown of the water system meant that Gatineau fire needed 30 firefighters and 12 trucks to supply water to extinguish a house fire at 176 Garnier, a two-storey house and apartment. The fire started in the kitchen.
The lone occupant, an elderly man, was not injured but received care from the Red Cross.

Melinda Karlsson's emotional Instagram post on death of son
Melinda Karlsson took to Instagram Friday to express her feelings about the death of her son last month.
“It’s taken me a while to reflect and collect my thoughts, but I finally feel strong enough to share them,” Melinda said.

Former MP Paul Dewar said in public Friday evening what he has expressed on social media, that he is overwhelmed by the support he has received during his cancer treatment.
