Hard Rock Casino might lure up to $62 million a year away from Casino Lac-Leamy, report claims
The Hard Rock Casino Ottawa at the Rideau Carleton Raceway could siphon off up to $62 million annually from Casino Lac-Leamy, claims an economic impact report commissioned by the casino-raceway partnership that also states the number is not grounded in evidence.
About $318 million is being spent to renovate and expand the raceway on Albion Road, a project that aims to increase the number of slot machines by 750 and the number of gaming tables by about 35. In 2022, when Hard Rock is scheduled to -
‘A leader by example': Ottawa fire Chief Gerry Pingitore leaves service a healthier place
Ottawa fire Chief Gerry Pingitore has seen numerous progressive changes to the fire service over the past 40 years. Now, at the end of his career, he’s proud to say he’s helped push many of them forward.
“There was a time when the fire service looked after its equipment better than they looked after its people,” he said.
Pingitore, 60, has had a long career, and is praised by many on his staff as a key player in making Ottawa’s fire service healthier to work in -

Protesters want better community support, not bigger jail
Protesters who don’t want Ontario to build a bigger jail in place of the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre demonstrated Friday to call for better community support for people charged with crimes.
A year ago, Ontario announced that Ottawa and Thunder Bay would get bigger jails after years of overcrowding in the current jails.
The Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services arranged to meet some community groups in Ottawa Friday, but postponed that meeting a few days ago. -

Reevely: Ottawa's new jail 'an innovation platform' to transform corrections, minister promises
The new jail the province is planning for Ottawa will have different levels of security for different inmates, proper health services and open visiting areas, Correctional Services Minister Marie-France Lalonde says, rather than just being a bigger version of the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre it’ll replace.
The new details are in a letter Lalonde sent Thursday to people who’ve participated in the early planning for the replacement, meant to counter criticism that the government is -

Editorial: The Chagall fiasco can be reframed
Many art patrons remember the gasps that greeted the National Gallery of Canada’s 1989 purchase of Barnett Newman’s Voice of Fire. Yes, for a cool $1.8 million, the gallery had just acquired a 5.4-metre canvas composed of three vertical stripes.
Indignation! Shock! Why, a five-year-old could have painted that, blared more than a few dismayed taxpayers. Art cognoscenti sniffed back about metaphysics and colour palettes and the like. The war or words went on for months.

Broken water main cuts supply to 2,000 Gatineau households
The City of Gatineau says a water main break late Friday morning has cut the water supply to some 2,000 residences.
The break occurred already under construction northeast of downtown core, on Saint-Louis Street, between Maloney Boulevard West and Vallières Street.
Initially, 28,000 households were thought to have been affected by the break, but the city now estimates the number is closer to 2,000.

Agency gives city more time to decide on fate of Prince of Wales Bridge
The Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) has granted the City of Ottawa an extension to decide the fortunes of the Prince of Wales Bridge.
On Feb. 16, the CTA ordered the city to make a decision by Apr. 30 about whether it would restore the Ottawa River Line — which includes the Prince of Wales Bridge — to functional status within 12 months.
The city appealed the order to the Federal Court of Appeal.
On Friday, the CTA granted the city an extension because the appeal hasn’t yet -
Theatre review: GCTC's production of Gracie is thoroughly compelling
A solo show is a tough gig, particularly when the part requires the actor to not only portray a lead character at different stages of life, but also take on the supporting roles in the story. In the case of Gracie, written by B.C. playwright Joan MacLeod, and being staged at the Great Canadian Theatre Company, there’s an added challenge. The script delves into a world so vastly removed from what we perceive as a normal childhood that it’s hard to imagine how a young Canadian theatre p -

Caivan Communities' Fox Run launches in Richmond (with no vinyl siding)
The latest player on the Ottawa home building field may be a new name to buyers, but it comes with a lengthy pedigree in the industry and some fresh ideas for its first Ottawa community, which launches Saturday in Richmond.
The builder is Caivan Communities, a land developer for more than a decade in Ottawa, Toronto and Florida and a collaborator with other builders in the region on projects such as the recently completed Monahan Landing in Kanata. Founders Frank Cairo and Tony van Haastrecht ar -

Adrean Farrugia/Joel Frahm CD reviewed
Blued Dharma (self-released) Adrean Farrugia/Joel Frahm
New York tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm is widely known in the jazz world for his effusive creativity, rollicking positive spirit, technical fluency and versatility.
Hamilton pianist Adrean Farrugia’s formidable playing is less well-known. But on Blued Dharma, a new album of duo exploits, Farrugia proves himself to be Frahm’s match.
Not that there was anything competitive going on in the studio when the two of them met in Ne -

Showers Saturday but summer-like days are on the way. Seriously
The good news is that the word “flurries” has disappeared from the local forecast and we’re now in for a plain-old rainy Saturday.
Up first for Friday, which is a PA day for kids in Ottawa’s biggest school board, features mixed skies, a high of 15 C and a low of 8 C, Environment Canada predicts.
Showers begin overnight then Saturday’s high is a forecast 12 C. There’s a 40 per cent chance of more rain overnight – it had been a risk of flurries in earlier -

MacDougall: Trudeau's partisan pitch revealing for all the things he didn't say
Leave it to the former drama teacher to “give the people what they want.”
Justin Trudeau’s address to the Liberal convention followed the old showbiz maxim to the letter, with the prime minister digging up Stephen Harper’s political corpse and beating it with great affection. “It may be Andrew Scheer’s smile,” Trudeau scoffed. “But it’s still Stephen Harper’s party.”
The crowd loved it, but it was an oddly conservative speech for -
Harmful intent: What Ottawa can do to prevent hostile vehicle attacks
Back in February 1997, new measures were announced aimed at keeping tourists and other people who had no business being on Parliament Hill from parking near the Centre Block.
A week earlier, a Jeep had crashed right into the doors of the House of Commons. The plans were aimed not only at making Parliament Hill a more pleasant place for pedestrians, but also at reducing the chances of a terrorist attack. In the words of Robert Marleau, then the clerk of the House of Commons, the safety measures w -
Dawson: Minassian was taken alive – but others haven't been so lucky
Canadians have been seized by the video of a Toronto police officer facing down Alek Minassian, the suspect in Monday’s van rampage, and peaceably arresting him without a shot fired.
“He’s a hero,” declared Mike McCormack, the Toronto police union boss. “Not just a Toronto hero, but a national hero.”
On Tuesday, Minassian appeared in court, facing 10 murder charges and a further 13 counts of attempted murder. Without the restraint of Const. Ken Lam, the o -

Today's letters: Phoenix, LRT, seniors' housing
Serve taxpayers, not bureaucrats
Re: Fixing Phoenix pay system is priority #1, says Canada’s top public servant, April 25.
What a relief it is to know that the Clerk of the Privy Council’s top priority is ensuring that a couple of hundred thousand federal government bureaucrats are paid properly. Heaven forbid that the first priority would be providing services to taxpayers. Then again, if cutting a cheque is too complex, one’s expectations should be correspondingly adjusted.&n -
