Police raided five locations in Ottawa and Gatineau on Tuesday, including an illegal marijuana dispensary on Montreal Road, seizing drugs and replica handguns, and charging four people.
It’s the first time a marijuana dispensary in Ottawa has been connected to seizures of drugs other than cannabis.
Ottawa police have conducted about 20 raids on pot shops in the past 18 months, seizing bags of dried weed, cannabis cookies, pop, candy and concentrates like shatter. However, police have never

Death of Ottawa roofer who fell four stories ruled accidental: inquest
An Ottawa roofer who had drugs in his system when he plummeted four stories to his death could have been saved by a simple clip or harness, an inquest heard Wednesday, before the workplace fatality was ruled an accident.
A five-person jury concluded the two-day inquest into the 2015 death of Robert Cyr, 47, by making recommendations to prevent future workplace falls.
According to witness testimony, Cyr was not clipped into any kind of anchor on the 2540 Innes Rd. rooftop when he -
Judge authorizes Phoenix class-action suit
A Quebec judge has given the green light to a potentially costly class-action lawsuit launched by disgruntled public servants whose lives have been turned upside down by the faulty Phoenix pay system.
In a judgment released earlier this month, Quebec Superior Court Justice Jean-Francois Emond authorized the class action to proceed to trial.
Court documents suggest between 40,000 to 70,000 occasional and casual federal employees from across Canada could be eligible to join the suit, m -
Egan: $275K-plus to fight bad review from the Better Business Bureau
The Better Business Bureau keeps an eye on companies for consumers. But who keeps an eye on the Better Business Bureau?
A small Ottawa shop has just concluded a long, costly lawsuit against the BBB of Ottawa-Hull for defamation after the firm was graded a D minus for not responding to a complaint from a customer in 2007.
It did not sit well with Barry Walsh, the operator of two heating and air-conditioning outfits. Two appeals and some 10 years later, he’s still not vindicated and finds hi -

Kanata LRT extension would cost $1.85B to build … someday
An 11-kilometre light-rail extension through Kanata, from Moodie Drive to Hazeldean Road, would cost $1.85 billion, a new report says.
The report published Wednesday reveals the results of the Kanata LRT environmental assessment. It confirms that the preferred route would see westbound trains leaving Moodie station travelling on tracks on the north side of Highway 417, crossing the highway to the Canadian Tire Centre and continuing south to a terminus at Hazeldean Road. It means LRT could serve -

Fixing Phoenix pay system is priority No. 1, says Canada's top public servant
Fixing the troubled Phoenix pay system is his top priority, says the chief of Canada’s public service.
The pay “challenges” that persist with the government’s payroll system are unacceptable, said Michael Wernick, the Clerk of the Privy Council, in his annual report to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Wernick said the government will continue to “work hard to make progress on the pay system and to ensure that our employees are paid accurately and on time,” but g -

Reevely: Ontario's government can't keep up a permanent war with its auditor
The numbers the Ontario Liberals are using in their financial projections ahead of the June election are “not reasonable,” auditor general Bonnie Lysyk reported Wednesday.
They insist that their multibillion-dollar borrowing to temporarily cut consumer power bills comes without costs to the provincial treasury and that surpluses in pension funds they can’t touch belong on the books, she said in her “Review of the 2018 Pre-Election Report on Ontario’s Finances” -

Montreal Dining Diary III: At Maison Boulud, a meeting of Italian star chefs during Montréal En Lumière
Earlier this year, when Maison Boulud took part in the Montréal En Lumière gastronomic and cultural festival, the highly esteemed restaurant in the Ritz-Carlton hotel departed somewhat from its focus on contemporary French fine dining.
That night, its guest chef was Gaetano Trovato, whose home base is the kitchen of Arnolfo, a two-Michelin-starred Tuscan restaurant about an hour’s drive south of Florence. Utlimately, it wasn’t that grave of a detour for Trovato to steer -
Stalled Somerset House reno a 'disgrace,' Mayor Watson says
The questionable stability of a stone wall in the historic Somerset House is the latest redevelopment challenge at the beat-up downtown building as Mayor Jim Watson stews over the lack of progress.

Glavin: How 'toxic masculinity' links proponents of violence
As we all strive and struggle to sort out what rational sense might be divined from Monday’s mass murder in the vicinity of Yonge and Finch in Toronto, the likely motive that has emerged, while still necessarily a matter of speculation, involves a dark and horrible thing that the overwhelming majority of us, it seems safe to say, have never even heard of before.
What is the proper word for this thing? Is it a psychopathology? Some sort of sociopathology? Is it even possible to reduce this -

Are 2 RCAF Chinooks enough for the Mali mission?
Melissa Kent, the CBC correspondent at the United Nations, has raised some interesting points in her article today about Canada’s contribution to the Mali mission.
Talks will take place today between UN and Canadian officials about the contribution.
Canada will supply two Chinook helicopters and four CH-146 Griffon helicopters to the UN mission to Mali. The UN, meanwhile, is expecting that two Chinooks will be available at any given time — which means Canada would -

OPP clocks 16-year-old motorcyclist at 192 km/h
A 16-year-old Brockville boy won himself a trip to court after a patrolling OPP officer clocked his eastbound motorcycle at nearly double the speed limit Monday afternoon.
The youth was going 192 km/h when he was pulled over at about 3:15 p.m. and had accelerated to that speed in the less than two km between the city’s two exits, Leeds County OPP reports.
Along with appearing in court on a stunt driving charge, the teen’s motorcycle was towed away to be impounded for a week. -

No way to account for billions of dollars of aid funding sent to Afghanistan, warns audit
The latest report from the U.S. government’s Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) outlines more problems with accountability for the billions of dollars being spent in that country. SIGAR released its audit of the World Bank-administered Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund (ARTF), one of the largest sources of funding to Afghan government operations outside the security sector.
Key findings:
— Billions of dollars of donor funds contributed to the ARTF ar -

House Works: Insulating a 1950s Bungalow
Q: What’s the best way to insulate the brick walls of my small bungalow built in 1952? There’s just plaster against the inside layer of brick with no insulation. I’m having insulation blown into the attic and I’m considering doing the same thing with wall cavities.
A: Your plan for attic insulation is great, but the walls pose more of a challenge. I’ve seen a number of small brick bungalows built in Canada in the early 1950s, and none offered enough open air space b -

The robbery suspect waves his gun around and even points it directly at the customer.

Denley: How the Liberals are playing right into Doug Ford's hands
We are at about the half-way point in Doug Ford’s mad dash from an unlikely Progressive Conservative leadership win to a likely provincial election victory. Give credit to Ford and his team for managing their campaign skilfully, but equal credit needs to go to Kathleen Wynne and the Liberals. They have played right into Ford’s hands.
First Ford vowed to fire the head of Hydro One, as if this were a solution to high power bills. The experts quickly dismissed this as foolishness. Of co -
