It was on May 3 of last year that Christine Smith saw her house floating away, literally lifted off its foundation in Constance Bay by the Ottawa River’s unstoppable floodwaters.
For good measure, the foundation crumbled as well.
All up and down the shore, homes were inundated by cold, muddy water that brought dirt and, after the flood receded, mould. Many houses were damaged, but the home where the Smiths lived for 16 years was destroyed.
“We lost it all. Everything,” Christin

Firefighters extinguish two grass fires the day after open fires were temporarily banned in Ottawa
Firefighters extinguished two grass fires in rural areas on Saturday, the day after Ottawa Fire Services issued a ban on open fires.

However, the planned reopening of the parkways to vehicles, scheduled for May 4, has been postponed.
Gatineau Park closed on April 16 because of damage caused by the freezing rain storm. Crews have removed large branches and trees, although none of the shelters or other buildings were damaged, said the NCC in a medi -

Finally: spring arrives with sunshine and warmer weather this weekend
The next few days are going to bring the kind of weather we deserved weeks ago.
Friday got the ball rolling, with a high of 10.8 C — the first time since February that Ottawa’s temperature reached double digits.
And there’s a solid period of sunshine and warmer air in the forecast. The highs are forecast to reach 11 C Saturday, 12 C Sunday, 17 C Monday and a glorious 18 C on Tuesday, with sunshine all the way.
As a bonus, the overnight lows are mostly going to stay above -

What is that beautiful, glowing orb in the sky? And why is everything getting warmer?
For days, weeks – maybe even months – we have whispered one word.
We predicted, we assumed, we hoped, we pleaded.
Cold gusts whisked away that word on endless winter winds.
But no more.
Today we don’t need to whisper anymore.
Today we can stand up and shout:
“Spring!”
Spring flowers.
The next four days will be absolute bliss.
Today’s high will finally break double digits, reaching an incomprehensible, yet very welcome, 11 C.
Best of all, we will be treated to -

This art is dull, pious and boring
The debate over the National Gallery’s sale of a Marc Chagall painting in order to purchase one by Jacques-Louis David causes me to weigh the paintings’ importance not only from a stylistic viewpoint but also from a societal vantage point.
David was a pillar of art in France when conservative values were under assault by revolutionaries, and for just cause. His staid, academic style and over-portrayed religious subject matter can be seen in every mu -

Youth and cannabis: Voices from the 4-20 celebration
Brooke Deschamps, 22
Why she smokes pot: “I have really bad anxiety. It totally calms me down.”
What she think of the risks: “I’m sure there are more benefits than harms. I’d rather not take pills.
I’ve been smoking it since I was 16. It could (damage brain cells), but not mine. Or if it has, I haven’t felt it.”

The event marks the last time pot users will flock to the Hill to celebrate cannabis culture in late April before the federal government legalizes recreational marijuana later this summer.
“What happened here today on Parliament Hill was a gathering of like-minded indi -
Ottawa Fire Service issues open fire ban
It’s another sure sign that spring has at last arrived.
Ottawa Fire Services slapped a city-wide ban on open fires Friday afternoon and said the ban will remain in effect until conditions improve. Or as the Fire Service puts it: until “the green grass starts to show through tall dead grass.”
One problem firefighters face this time of year is the soggy spring ground, which makes it impossible for heavy trucks to go off road to fight bush and grass fires. Dry spells and high wind -
