MPs ask questions about Mali combat – senior Canadian officer says combat debate “nonsensical”
The Conservative government’s defence critic says it is inappropriate for a senior Canadian Forces officer to question the right of MPs to raise concerns about whether the upcoming mission to Mali is combat.
MPs on the House of Commons defence committee raised those concerns Thursday and questioned generals about details of the Mali mission and whether Canadian military personnel would be safe.
Conservative defence critic James Bezan wanted information about the risks and whether troops wi -

George Thorogood: "I need a band to make my statement"
George Thorogood has been plying his brand of three-chord boogie (boozy?) blues for more than 40 years, almost always rocking out with his dependable band, the Delaware Destroyers. Although Thorogood released a solo acoustic album, Party of One, last year, he has no intention of touring on his own, he told Lynn Saxberg in a recent interview. On the eve of his Rock Party Tour through Canada, the famously crusty musician, now 68, also shared some advice from his hero, John Lee Hooker, and what may -

Editorial: A Butterfly Garden for Jonathan Pitre
This week, Tina Boileau, the mother of Jonathan Pitre, confirmed her interest in a memorial to the 17-year-old warrior who battled the skin disease epidermolysis bullosa his entire life. In a Citizen interview, she agreed a butterfly garden or conservatory could be created or named in his honour.
We like it too. This would be an attractive, fitting tribute to the young man who died just over two weeks ago. Jonathan was known as a “butterfly child” because young people with the skin-r -

Road resurfacing on the Portage Bridge could be the headache of the summer for motorists travelling between Ottawa and Gatineau.
The city held its seasonal construction update Friday, highlighting road and building construction in the spring and summer.

Five arrested in Gatineau bust of synthetic drug ring
Gatineau police report that they’ve shut down a drug trafficking network after raiding a home that served as a point of sale Wednesday, making a major seizure of synthetic drugs and arresting five people.
The seized drugs include 11 litres of gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GHB), a party drug that’s been dubbed the date rape drug and nearly 2,000 methamphetamine tables, police said Friday.
They executed a search warrant at 71 de la Baie St. and arrested two men, aged 58 and 51, and -
Diner, city win the great patio war of Welly West
The City of Ottawa has thwarted a legal offensive on a restaurant patio in Wellington West.
In a decision released Thursday, the Ontario Municipal Board dismissed an appeal of a city planning decision to allow an outdoor seating area at the Wellington Diner at 1385 Wellington St. W.
City council in summer 2017 approved the necessary zoning amendments to allow a 20-square-metre patio at the restaurant, which already has the outdoor amenity space for a patio, but until the council decision, didn&r -

“Regretfully, after three wonderful years, Dingerz Batting Centre will be closing its doors effective immediately,” said the statement attributed to Brian Beehler. “We are very grateful to everyone who has supported -
Kurl: Trans Mountain – yes, there's a glimmer of light at the end of the pipeline
It must be a confounding reality show to people watching from east of the Rockies: protesters outside Vancouver being hauled away in their fight to stop the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain expansion; B.C. The Avengers are having a big cross-country event and it's already started in Ottawa
At least one manhole cover painted like Captain America’s signature shield popped up in Ottawa Friday morning.
It’s apparently part of the launch of Avengers: Infinity War, which hits theaters April 27.
The studio says its putting out “clues or sightings” in 10 key markets as part of a marketing campaign to have Canadians identify the avenger that’s “assigned” to their city.

Bartlett: Why we should worry about the city's homelessness plan
Recently, following release of the City of Ottawa staff’s update on the 10-year housing and homelessness plan (which covers 2014 to 2024) local media asked whether or not Ottawa can really end homelessness.
Yes – but there are several good reasons for asking.
First, the outcomes reported in the update were poor. Shelter use continues to rise, as does the length of shelter stays. Levels of chronic homelessness are also broadly unchanged since the plan was introduced, although the comp -

Heavenly conversion: Former convent in Westboro turned show-stopping home
After two years of searching for the right home, Denise Hulaj felt it was divine intervention when she walked through the doors of a former convent turned modern showpiece in Westboro.
A neighbourhood landmark, the former nunnery, school and home, which sits on the corner of Kenwood and Edison avenues, was designed and built in the early 1930s by Mother Marie Thomas d’Aquin, founder of the Institute Jeanne d’Arc, a religious order dedicated to providing room and board to young women. -

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damage is pegged at $67,000. -

Ancient builders' skills live on at Science and Tech Museum
Research on a centuries-old collection of builders’ instruments from the Mediterranean world has brought the Canada Science and Technology Museum a national award from the Canadian Museums Association.
The levels, compasses and more come from the eastern Mediterranean countries which once formed the heart of the Ottoman Empire.
David Pantalony, curator of physical sciences and medicine at the Canada Science and Technology Museum with part of the collection of centuries old builders’ -
Risk of a few flurries, pot haze then pure sunshine for days
Fingers crossed that Friday is the final appearance of flurries in the forecast.
There’s a 40 per cent chance of them in the morning then some sunshine peeks through cloudy skies with a blustery high of 7, Environment Canada predicts.
Watch for a dense haze around Parliament Hill, though. It’s 420, the day when cannabis enthusiasts congregate.

At 37, Shelly Abad Cruz discovered she was pregnant — and had cancer
Shelly Abad Cruz was overjoyed last November when she discovered she was unexpectedly pregnant with her first child.
At 37, she and husband Archie Duldulao, 39, had long let go of trying to conceive.
When Cruz was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in March, however, the couple was shocked into silence.
Doctors immediately suggested surgery in April to remove her right breast and a lymph node under her right arm. She has also agreed to chemotherapy and radiation for an incurable tumour -
Today's letters: The fate of 24 Sussex, the failure of Phoenix
Why not just replicate 24 Sussex?
Re: 24 Sussex contains more asbestos than thought, April 19.
With the advance in building technology, can we not tear down the existing decrepit building at 24 Sussex and completely replicate it with a new building that comes with modern, safe and eco-minded amenities that would have the exact footprint, floor plans and facade for the same money they may spend on retrofit?
The building is old and the legacy is that it will be a money pit. Public servants need to -
Kolga: We need to stop Russia's cyber and disinformation campaign now
This week, the so-called “Five Eyes” security group – Britain, Australia, New Zealand, the United States and Canada – met to talk about cyber attacks, mostly from Russia. The U.S. and U.K. also issued a warning that Russia has been heavily involved in cyber and disinformation attacks.
It can no longer be ignored that Canada is one target of Kremlin disinformation aimed at subverting our democracy and alliances.
The expulsion of four Russian agents was a good first step in -
