An accused murderer and rapist, a man who allegedly sexually assaulted a woman, and a man police believe tried to rob Bitcoin dealers at gunpoint have all been charged with attempting to kill a fellow inmate in a jailhouse attack last week.
Homicide detectives have charged Mohamed Barkhadle, 32, Pierre Senatus, 22, and Jimmy St. Hilaire, 19, with attempted murder after the April 11 jailhouse beating that left 36-year-old Marco Michaud with severe head injuries. He remains in hospital in an

Inquest jury makes 29 recommendations to prevent inmate suicides
A coroner’s inquest looking into the hanging death of accused serial rapist Yousef Hussein at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre has made 29 recommendations aimed at preventing inmate suicide.
Hussein, 27 at the time of his death, was not considered at risk of harming himself when he entered the Ottawa Carleton Detention Centre in May 2014.
On April 12, 2016, still awaiting trial, Hussein was found hanging by a sheet from the upper bunk railing in his cell shortly after 3 a.m, only 12 ho -
City will count the number of homeless people in Ottawa over 24-hour period
The City of Ottawa’s first “point-in-time” count of homeless people will happen over a 24-hour period this week, involving about 200 city and agency workers administering surveys in shelters, hospitals, correctional centres and on the streets.
City housing director Shelley VanBuskirk said the project working group hopes to survey about 2,800 people starting Thursday at noon.
“We’ve marked out walking routes across the city,” VanBuskirk said. “Teams (of t -
Reevely: Tories' minimum-wage plans aren't that different from anybody else's
The difference between Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives and our New Democrats on the minimum wage is $1 an hour, plus a whole lot of yelling.
All the major parties agree that there’s a price at which working is so exploitive that it must be kept illegal. All of them agree it’s the government’s job to decide where that is. The Tories say it’s $14 an hour; the Liberals say it’s $15 an hour, with exceptions for students working part time and servers who get ti -
SIU closes investigation after police break ribs of Ottawa man
Ontario’s police watchdog has closed an investigation into an incident that left an Ottawa man with broken ribs in 2016.
According to a report released by the Special Investigations Unit on Tuesday, the man was seen making a U-turn on Feb. 19, 2016 while driving westbound along Queen Mary Street towards the Vanier Parkway around 1 a.m.
The move caught the attention of police, who said they witnessed the man allegedly drive through a stop sign at a speed of around 25 km/h. He then turned in -

Leroux: How long-term care became an uplifting experience
In early October 2017, I ceased to be able to stand and walk. I required a mechanical lift for twice-daily transfers between my bed and a wheelchair. After two months at The Ottawa Hospital, I was placed at Extendicare Medex, a long-term care facility on Baseline Road. I saw the move as a step toward irreversible decline, and faced an uncertain future.
Little did I know that my best days lay, not behind, but ahead of me. I was about to embark on an incredible journey of personal growth and spiri -
Health board voices opposition to increased gaming, approves plan to combat problem gambling
Most members on Ottawa’s board of health want the city to know they’re against giving people more access to gambling, weeks before councillors are scheduled to decide if Hard Rock Casino Ottawa should be allowed to expand at the Rideau Carleton Raceway.
The board on Monday night unanimously approved a four-point plan devised by staff in response to the growth of gambling options in Ottawa. Hard Rock is planning a major expansion at the horse track on Albion Road. Ottawa residents con -

Pardy: 'Peacekeeping' in Mali is but a mirage for Canada
There is a sharp bit of historical cynicism that generals always prepare to fight the last war. In today’s world, it’s politicians who want to ignore the lessons of the past and fight the war again.
Case in point: the decision to deploy the Canadian military as part of the United Nations “peacekeeping” force in Mali. Mali, which, just last week, suffered another attack on peacekeepers on its soil – one Blue Helmet was killed, and 14 French troops and UN peacek -

Cohen: Killing the Iran nuclear deal would be the worst mistake of Trump’s presidency
U.S. President Donald Trump is threatening to withdraw next month from the landmark international agreement that has prevented Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. It would be the worst mistake of his presidency.
Under the agreement, the United States, France, Britain, China, Russia and Germany in 2015 agreed to lift their severe sanctions on Iran in exchange for restricting Iran’s nuclear program. The deal took years of hard, fitful negotiations.
For Iran, it meant new access to tra -

Canadian special forces from Petawawa in Africa to train troops
Canadian special forces from Petawawa are in Africa training troops as part of a U.S. exercise.
A team of around 20 individuals are involved with Exercise Flintlock 2018, which runs until April 20, said Capt. Sally-Ann Cyr, a spokeswoman for the Canadian Special Operations Regiment, or CSOR.
The exercise started April 1 and involves 1,500 military personnel from 20 African and western nations. Training is being conducted in Niger, Burkina Faso, and Senegal.

As spring stays away, will Ottawa sports fields open on time?
Ottawa golf course owner Gib Patterson hesitated to use the word “delay” when discussing when his greens will open this spring, in the midst of some unpredictable weather.
To him, there’s no delay. They’ll open when they open.
“Honest to God, you’ll have weather every day of the year,” Patterson said. “You learn very soon to never worry about the things you have no control over.”
Patterson, who owns Anderson Links, Emerald Links and Clov -

House Works: Cordless tools reach new heights
Power tool technology is the same as every other kind of advancement in the world. New stuff is expensive and exclusive at first, then it gets cheaper and more widely available in time. So what kind of new and interesting pro-grade tools show the future of tools for mainstream do-it-yourselfers? The newest wave of innovation happening out there now involves cordless power tools that used to have a cord, and one of the most recent and impressive is a compressor.

Government launches training to help civil servants 'understand' Phoenix
The federal government is now offering civil servants training to help them “understand how to use” the disastrous Phoenix pay system.
The new training is now available online, the official page for Public Services and Procurement Canada tweeted Tuesday.
Developed by the Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat, it explains how data flows between human resources systems and Phoenix, PSPC said.

Arborist Trevor Miazga had just got home from one emergency callout due to Monday’s ice storm, when he answered the call for another.
Two baby great-horned owls had spent hours alone in their Petrie Island willow tree nest after their mother had been critically injured earlier in the day, likely by a falling chunk of ice.
“We love nature, so when we heard about a couple of baby owls, we headed out to help,” Miazga said Monday night.

Snow, rain, flurries, freezing drizzle, fog for ice storm clean-up
The good news: Mother Nature is about to hit the spring switch. Seriously.
Saturday’s forecast of mixed skies and 11 C is just a warm up. Sunday and Monday’s outlook is for pure sunshine and highs of 14 C and 15 C.
The bad news is Tuesday’s forecast, as the city recovers from Monday’s ice storm.
There isn’t a watch or warning in sight — for once — but it includes fog, periods of snow mixed with rain in the morning with the risk of freezing drizzle, south -
More messy weather ahead, power still out for some after ice storm
More messy weather may be on the way even as the region cleans up the downed tree branches and power lines left by the ice storm.
No alerts were in effect but Tuesday’s forecast includes fog, periods of snow mixed with rain in the morning with the risk of freezing drizzle, southwest winds at 20 km/h gusting to 40 and a high of just 4 C.
For Tuesday evening, there’s a 60 per cent chance of rain or flurries switching to a 40 per cent chance of flurries and a low of 0 C.

'What the f— do you think I am?': Ex-Ottawa jail nurse faces disciplinary hearing over conduct
It’s either the story of a nightmare nurse making dangerous mistakes at the Innes Road jail — or it’s the story of a “toxic” workplace that was understaffed and pushed someone to the breaking point.
It just depends whom you ask.
Next month, a former nurse at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre will face a disciplinary hearing over allegations she overdosed patients with methadone, withheld medication from others, and complained to her manager “what -
Munson: Here's what a national autism strategy can do
“We’re living a nightmare,” says the mother of a boy with autism. The mother is Carly Sutherland. The Bedford, Nova Scotia mom is not alone in dealing with a violent child.
It’s a desperate cry for help and more resources for families in crisis.
Elderly parents of autistic adults in a rural community in western Ontario are living with deep anxiety and worry at what will happen to their adult children when they are too old to care for them or when they’re g -

Hundreds brave ice storm to attend Doug Ford rallies in Ottawa
Doug Ford rolled into Ottawa on Monday, hammering away on some traditional Conservative targets — Hydro One and Liberal spending, for example — and unveiling a new campaign pledge: eliminating provincial taxes for workers earning minimum wage.
“My heart breaks for people on minimum wage,” the Ontario Conservative leader told a rally Monday night at the Nepean Sportsplex. “The Liberals decided to put (minimum wage) up to $14, but what people don’t realize is th -
Second man in Voelzing feud also charged by police
There were two men involved in the feud that claimed Christina Voelzing’s life in 2016.
Behnam Yaali has pleaded guilty to manslaughter and is awaiting sentencing. But the man Yaali’s defence argues was the intended victim of the shooting, was also charged in connection to the shooting.
At the time of her death, Voelzing was dating Hassan Khalid, now 32.
Yaali’s defence lawyer, Neil Weinstein, argued Monday at his client’s sentencing hearing that it was Khalid who was the -
From ice storm to rain storm: Spring misery will end — eventually
Ottawa’s miserable spring of 2018 outdid itself on Monday, caking the city in a rime that knocked out power, turned roads and sidewalks into skating rinks and probably made the robins rethink their decision to come north this year.
But that, as they say, is yesterday’s news.
Scrape the ice off your windows and you’ll see better times ahead. Sunny times. Balmy times. Maybe even for the weekend, when Environment Canada predicts sunshine and high of 11. If it comes to pass, it wil -

City says three LTC homes flagged by province are now 'in compliance'
After three of the four city-run long-term care homes were flagged by provincial inspectors for non-compliance violations, city officials say each of the homes was “placed back in compliance” as of January.
Provincial inspectors found issues at 10 of the 26 total long-term care facilities in Ottawa, including violations at three of the four long-term care homes operated by the city. Public reports on each home, included and linked in the provincial database, detail issues of resident
