The owners of Fred Guy Moving and Storage Ltd. held a cryptic meeting with workers on Friday morning suggesting that the company’s future may be in doubt, according to one employee.
Daniel Babin, who has worked as a mover with the well-known firm for 18 years, said the meeting was short on details but seemed to suggest that new ownership may be announced on Monday morning.

Suicides difficult to predict, psychiatrist tells jail hanging death inquest
The suicide of an accused serial rapist at the Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre may have been “impulsive,” a forensic psychiatrist told an inquest looking into the man’s death.
Yousef Hussein, 27, was found hanging in his cell on April 12, 2016. He was one of three inmates in the jail to kill himself by hanging while in segregation at the jail within a 10-month period.

Reevely: Melnyk's right worry about the LeBreton condos
Eugene Melnyk is fretting publicly about whether his own proposal for LeBreton Flats is any good and he’s not just blowing smoke.
On his tour of town halls with aggrieved season-ticket holders for his Ottawa Senators, Melnyk started submarining the LeBreton plans. They’re supposed to see the fallow ground in the middle of Ottawa, the scar of a federal mistake in the 1960s, turned into a new residential, culture and entertainment district with a new arena for the Senators.

Gatineau police warn of 'theft by distraction' fraud scheme
Gatineau police are warning of a fraud scheme dubbed “theft by distraction” that has recently gained momentum.
Police said in a release Friday the scheme can vary in delivery, but it tends to involve several people working in concert to steal items from unsuspecting members of the public.
“These thieves are men, women, teenagers, mothers with their babies. They are often friendly and sociable,” says the police news release, translated from French.

Science busking in the ByWard Market this Saturday
An annual spring march to Parliament Hill by scientists is taking a sharp turn this year, as some of them will head for the ByWard Market to tell strangers what they do.
The scientists call it storytelling, but it owes something to market busking as well.
“This part is new. When we started thinking about doing another March for Science, we really wanted to do something different … breaking down barriers between scientists and the public,” said Katie Gibbs. She is executive dir -

Fogel: Global community must recognize Hamas tactics in Gaza
If a protest is worth 1,000 words, then a glance at two very distinct protests is worth an entire thesis on why Israeli-Palestinian peace remains elusive.
As in any democracy, countless non-violent demonstrations take place in Israel and the West Bank in which no one is harmed. For Israeli security forces, even raucous protests are nothing new. However, far from holding peaceful protests on the Gaza border over the past two weekends, Hamas orchestrated violent clashes aimed at escalating the con -

Gormley: Insulting a monarch can still get you into a royal mess
In the event that you occasionally entertain notions of giving obscure European royals a piece of your mind, you might take pause to consider this: In the Netherlands, to insult the king is now to commit a crime punishable by up to four months in prison. This change in law, passed in the lower house last week, might embolden rather than deter you, however, as it is more rather than less lenient. Insulting a Dutch monarch was previously punishable by up to five years.

Two Quebec museums open to teaming up with the National Gallery to buy prized French painting
The directors of Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and the Musée de la civilisation à Québec said Thursday that they hope they can join forces with the National Gallery of Canada to acquire Jacques-Louis David’s prized painting of Saint Jerome.

How the National Gallery of Canada acquires and sells off its artworks
The National Gallery of Canada’s decision to sell off a multi-million dollar Chagall painting next month at a New York auction in order to buy a “national treasure” that it refuses to identify has prompted a lot of second-guessing from armchair art critics. Here are the policies and processes that the Gallery abides by when it acquires and, much more infrequently, sells works of art.

Has BlackBerry become a 'patent troll'? Not quite, says Ottawa researcher
Tech companies will be closely monitoring the results of BlackBerry’s patent infringement lawsuits against Facebook and Snapchat, which could have a lasting impact on the tech sector and beyond, an Ottawa legal researcher says.
The Waterloo-based software company and former smartphone maker recently made headlines after announcing separate suits in U.S. court against Facebook Inc. and Snap Inc. (which makes Snapchat) over alleged patent infringements related to instant messaging systems.

Rain, up to 12 cm of snow and freezing rain coming in 'high impact storm'
As much as 12 cm of snow and ice pellets with a freezing rain chaser is the latest weekend weather forecast for Ottawa from Environment Canada.
The special weather statement for the capital region remained unchanged Friday with a warning of a “messy mix” into Monday.
Friday’s rain will switch to snow overnight, at times mixed with ice pellets that will persist into Saturday.
A total of 2 cm is expected Friday night and 5 to 10 cm Saturday.
After a Saturday night “lull,&rd -
Pedestrian killed in 401 hit-and-run near Kingston
Westbound traffic on Highway 401 was detoured at Gardiners Road Friday morning as the OPP investigated an overnight hit-and-run that left a pedestrian dead.
Frontenac OPP officers were called the scene at about 1 a.m. They found a man who was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the vehicle believed to have struck him had fled.
The detour was expected to be in effect until about 10 a.m. as officers examine the scene with the help of the force’s technical collision investigators.

Police use Taser on man who won't flee apartment fire
Police report that they had to use a Taser on a man who refused to leave his Somerset Street West apartment, which was full of smoke from a small fire Friday morning.
The man – and several police officers – were treated for smoke inhalation in what police are treating as a mental-health call.
First responders were called at 4:29 a.m. to the first-floor apartment in a building near the intersection of Metcalfe Street.
Some cardboard was on fire but the unit was full of smoke but the m -
Buying big: Taking a gamble with Rockcliffe Park real estate
It’s not often a piece of real estate in Ottawa’s exclusive Rockcliffe neighbourhood is up for sale. So when 580 Mariposa Ave. hit the market at about $1 million, two local builders jumped at the opportunity.
It was a gamble, they’ll admit, but it has good odds.
Daniel Ladouceur and Michael DePalo are co-owners of Novera Homes, a high-end custom homebuilder. They boast more than 30 years experience in building, but agree that working in an established neighbourhood like Rockcli -
NRC vice-president's private French language training (in Alberta) now at two years, $90,000 – and counting
The National Research Council is keeping one of its vice-presidents on full salary for nearly two years of French language training in Alberta, while covering his private lessons at a cost of $90,000 and counting.
Ian Potter has been vice-president of engineering at the NRC since 2011. He was brought in by then-president John McDougall, a Conservative appointee who left the job suddenly in 2016. The two men had been executives together at Alberta’s publicly-funded R&D corpor -
Today's letters: Vimy's role, justice denied, the pipeline
Heroism extended beyond Vimy
Re: Vimy advertisement, April 9.
The full-page Vimy Ridge advertisement in Monday’s Citizen by the Vimy Foundation, commemorating the 101st anniversary of the battle and proclaiming April 9 as ‘The Day Canada Became a Nation,” appears to be part of a steady campaign to ingrain that tagline within our society.
Sadly John McCrae, the lieutenant colonel who wrote “In Flanders Fields,” – the poem which our remembrance ceremony is -
MacDougall: Trudeau's in trouble on the pipeline battle
“The Trans Mountain expansion will be built.”
With the nation mourning Humboldt’s loss, pecking out an obstinate tweet about an oil pipeline buried in political grief wasn’t at the top of Justin Trudeau’s to-do list, yet out the above twittered ahead of the prime minister joining members of the shattered prairie community for last Sunday’s vigil.
Canada is a country of the rule of law, and the federal government will act in the national interest. Access to wor -
Cass: Why is the CBSA deporting Lucy Granados?
The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) likes to refer to people in its custody as “clients.”
On March 20, CBSA agents arrested a “client” at her home. The woman is Lucy Francineth Granados, a single mother who lives in Montreal. She was detained not because she had committed a crime, but because she is “undocumented” in Canada (that is, living here without immigration status).
Lucy came to Canada in 2009 after fleeing gang-related violence in Guatemala. Her -
Adam: Here's why rank-and-file police should be heard
For some time now, Mayor Jim Watson has engaged in a war of words with rank-and-file Ottawa police officers over their dissatisfaction with Chief Charles Bordeleau’s leadership, basically telling them to take a hike.
The latest, as reported by the Citizen’s David Reevely, has Watson telling off an anonymous police officer who criticized the mayor for tweeting about a meeting he had on public safety with Bordeleau.
“This is what, your 3rd highly publicized meeting in as many yea -
