Merivale High School is closed to all community uses on Wednesday evening because of a “maintenance issue,” the public school board says.
The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, which sent out a news release late Wednesday afternoon, didn’t say what the problem is at the high school.
The school board expects the school to be open on Thursday.

Cops cuff three during drug bust in Centretown
Ottawa police arrested three people during a drug bust in Centretown on Tuesday.
According to police, the street crime unit executed a warrant Florence Street between Bank and Kent streets, in response to several complaints about the possibility of drug trafficking at a residence.
Police seized cash, drug-packing materials and a variety of suspected drugs, including fentanyl, crack cocaine, hydromorphone, heroin and nabilone, a synthetic form of cannabis usually used to treat nausea in canc -
Reevely: City plans to treat payday-loan shops like strip clubs with new rules coming soon
Payday lenders could be treated like strip clubs in Ottawa by the end of the year — restricted to a few parts of the city and gradually squeezed out of downtown.
“They bring nothing to the streetscape of our communities,” Mayor Jim Watson said in a city council meeting on Wednesday, where councillors voted unanimously to ask city planners to work up new zoning restrictions that would keep new payday lenders from opening.
It’ll take about nine months, the city’s gene -

Rochester Street's cottonwood was cut down — and unexpectedly healthy
All that’s left of LeBreton’s biggest tree is a stump. But what a stump.
The cutting of the 110-storey-tall cottonwood on Rochester Street, estimated at 115 years old, began Tuesday. And by Wednesday morning all that was left was the enormous base, and a single massive branch rising from it where there used to be four or five others just like it.
The chainsaw was working intermittently, as it took time to lower the enormous sections of the branches down to a waiting truck.

Behind the scenes with Ottawa's first first-responders
To get a taste of what paramedic dispatchers and call-takers do, I was given the chance to answer a simulated call at the Ottawa Paramedic Service. When asked what scenario I wanted to try, I opted for “woman giving birth.”
Struggling to navigate three computers and the hysterical screams of the pregnant woman (a communications training officer) on the line, I began sweating, stuttering and losing the ability to type properly. The baby was “successfully delivered”. -
Ottawa looks for new deputy police chief
The Ottawa police services board is beginning a national hunt to find the force’s newest deputy chief.
The position is open to both currently serving members of the force and those who are external to the organization.
“We recognize the strong caliber (sic) of the current senior leadership team at the OPS however we also know the benefits of casting a wider net as we look to find the best candidate for the job,” board chair Coun. Eli El-Chantiry said in a news release.

'Not sufficient evidence' for charges in Papanack Zoo probe, says OSPCA
No charges have been laid in a probe of the treatment of animals at the Papanack Zoo, according to the Ontario Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
The society confirmed it had launched an investigation last August after Ottawa-based legal advocates Animal Justice released a video that allegedly depicted abuse at the zoo in Wendover, about 50 kilometres east of Ottawa.

Dance
The battle between good and evil continues in the full-length ballet version of Dracula, presented by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet at the National Arts Centre this weekend. Based on the Bram Stoker classic, with choreography by Mark Godden, it’s a contemporary retelling of the bloodthirsty tale that pays tribute to the classical ballet tradition. Rife with drama, it’s also one of the most popular pieces in the Royal Winnipeg’s repertoire, a surefire sellout whenever it&rsquo -
Council briefs: Albert-Slater redesign approved, space granted for new landfill
Ottawa will rebuild Albert and Slater streets after the new light-rail line opens, aiming to make them more pleasant for pedestrians and cyclists after hundreds of buses no longer ply the east-west downtown arteries.
City council approved detailed plans Wednesday that include bike tracks, wider sidewalks, planters, benches and trees. The work should start in 2019 and will change both streets end to end, from LeBreton Flats to the Mackenzie King Bridge outside the Rideau Centre.

Rink of Dreams calls it a season after 126 days
Calling it “one of our best seasons yet,” the city closed the Rink of Dreams on Wednesday after a 126-day season that saw 30,000 skaters come out.
The rink, which is located in Marion Dewar Plaza at city hall, is one of the largest outdoor public rinks in Ottawa.
The 2017-18 season lasted about a week longer and saw more skaters than the previous season, which was on for 120 days and had about 25,000 skaters, Mayor Jim Watson tweeted at the time.

Ottawa will find permanent honour for Jonathan Pitre, mayor says
Ottawa will honour the memory of Jonathan Pitre by naming a road, recreation centre or other important city facility after him, Mayor Jim Watson said Wednesday.
Pitre died last Wednesday at 17 of an infection after a lifelong struggle with epidermolysis bullosa, a genetic disorder that kept the layers of his skin from staying connected. He brought international attention to the rare, painful and currently incurable condition, and his spirit and the devotion of his mother Tina Boileau to his -

Glavin: How the West continues to fail the people of Syria
“An individual, a group, a party, or a class that ‘objectively’ picks its nose while it watches men drunk with blood massacring defenceless people is condemned by history to rot and become worm-eaten while it is still alive.”
When the young war correspondent Lev Davidovich Bronstein wrote those words in 1912, the individual he had in mind was the historian and prominent Russian intellectual Pavel Nikolayevich Miliukov, leader of Russia’s liberal-left Constitutional -

Denley: Ontario school repair bill has tripled under the Liberals
Please write this number down and stick it to your fridge, so you can refer to it every time a provincial politician promises a new program that costs hundreds of millions of dollars.
The repair backlog for the province’s schools is $16 billion. Yes, billion. That’s triple what it was 15 years ago, when the Liberal government took over.
Before we reach for the next bright, shiny thing, shouldn’t the provincial government start doing the basic job one would have thought our tax -

Tiny home festival goes big in Perth
Imagine living in house measured around 100 to 400 square feet. Your kitchen, bedroom, bathroom and living area all fit into this small, confined area — by choice.
Having a hard time picturing it?
This is the reality for those who chose to live in a tiny house. And if you’re still having trouble getting your head around it, you’re invited to come see what it’s all about at the annual Century 21 Perth Tiny House & Green Home Festival on April 21.

Singer Johnny Reid comfortable bending genres
CALGARY — There’s a story Johnny Reid likes to tell when the topic of genre comes up.
The Scottish-born musician has always tended to blur lines: He’s the country gentleman with rock and roll leanings who can belt out soul and R&B tunes with the best of them.
But it was super-producer Bob Ezrin who put some perspective on the question of genre when it comes to Reid. While they were in the studio recording 2015’s What Love Is All About, a friend of Ezrin asked him -
'Major ice storm' may hit parts of Eastern Ontario this weekend
Weather watchers say that it’s looking increasingly likely that a “major ice storm” will strike southerly parts of the province this weekend.
It would make travel hazardous while accumulations of up to 20 millimetres of ice combined with gusty winds to 60 km/h may cause widespread power outages due to fallen tree limbs and power lines, Environment Canada warns.
It’s not yet clear which areas will be most affected but the agency’s special weather statement incl -
Phoenix causing 'great hardship' for 1 in 5, PSAC survey shows
More than 80 per cent of federal workers say they’ve been affected by Phoenix pay issues and nearly 20 per cent say it’s caused them “great hardship”, according to a poll commissioned by the Public Service Alliance of Canada.
The survey, released Wednesday, also showed that PSAC members had avoided asking for leave, delayed transferring positions or turned down a chance for an acting assignment because they feared the troubled, two-year-old pay system would mess up their -

10-25 cm of snow? Weekend weather could bring a winter wallop
Are we skipping spring this year?
Environment Canada’s forecast is for some decidedly April-like showers to wind down the week and a wintry weekend snowstorm.
It’s still days away, but the rival Weather Network is predicting Ottawa will need umbrellas for 10 to 15 mm of rain Thursday and 5 to 10 mm Friday.
Then, the broadcaster warns, it’s back to shoveling Saturday with 10 to 15 cm of snow. In their outlook, Sunday is even messier with about 10 cm of snow and 10 to 15 mm -

Portman: Try again on Château Laurier design
The owners of the Fairmont Château Laurier should pay a visit to Niagara-on-the-Lake. It might deter them from the folly of their proposed addition to a legendary Ottawa landmark.
One of the many pleasures of this exquisite 19th-century town comes when you arrive at Picton Street. On one side you encounter the magic and beauty of historic Simcoe Park. And opposite, extending well along this flower-bedecked stretch, you find the Victorian charm of the Prince of Wales Hotel.
