Rochester Street's cottonwood to be cut down Tuesday
A towering cottonwood tree that has lived for at least 115 years on Rochester Street will be cut down Tuesday, and Wednesday, and possibly Thursday as well.
Neighbours have been saying their goodbyes for weeks, beginning even before owner Lynn Griffiths held a wake for the tree on St. Patrick’s Day.
“The wake was great. People were taking pictures, they were telling stories, people were hugging the tree,” she said Monday.
“I’ve had a steady stream of people up my dr -

Reevely: Tories eject Kitchener MPP accused of harassing intern, but didn't rush it
The Ontario Progressive Conservatives have kicked Kitchener MPP Michael Harris out of caucus on allegations he sexually harassed an intern, the party said Monday, two days after he said he’d be leaving politics to deal with a degenerative eye condition.
The party first heard of the allegations Friday, a statement from Tory caucus chair Lisa Thompson said.
“The evidence presented to us included a written complaint from 2013 by a former intern about how she had been passed over for emp -

Failed gambler calls 911 from casino for ride home
Gamblers need to know when to walk away and when to run, Kenny Rogers famously sang.
Maybe he should have added when to call 911.
A 21-year-old Quebec woman called for help at 5 a.m. Saturday because she’d lost all of her money at the Shoreline Casino Thousand Islands and wanted police to help her get home, Leeds OPP reported Monday.
Police told her to “stay put” at the Gananoque casino so they could make sure she was safe but the woman called back to say someone had given her -

The gentrification of hockey? It's in the teeth, dentist says
If there’s sign of just how gentrified hockey has become in this country, it may be in the pearly whites of the youngsters playing the game.
Nalin Bhargava is the dentist for Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group teams at Lansdowne — the CFL’s Redblacks, the Fury soccer teams and the OHL’s Ottawa 67s.
He’s seen his share of athletes’ teeth. Yet he was dumbfounded by this: the 67’s hockey players had near-perfect teeth. Straight. So he asked, & -
One resident hurt in Centretown apartment fire on Gilmour Street
One man was being cared for by paramedics while other residents sheltered in an OC Transpo bus after a fire in a Centretown apartment building Sunday night.
Fire crews were summoned by an alarm from 379 Gilmour St. and then a 911 call reporting smoke on the 7th floor.
They spotted heavy, black smoke coming from one of the apartments on that floor and declared a working fire at 10:47 p.m.
The flames were under control by 10:54 p.m. and losses stopped at 11 p.m.

Hockey Canada's CEO part of grassroots push to diversify the game
Perhaps surprising for a man who dwelled among the hockey elite as head coach of Team Canada and three NHL teams, Tom Renney remains a grass-roots hockey guy.
As CEO of Hockey Canada, Renney, who’s from Cranbrook, B.C., has upped the ante on making hockey a game for all Canadians, not just those wearing AAA team blazers and hoping to get drafted into the NHL.
“That approach has got me jobs, and cost me jobs,” Renney says. “I haven’t deviated from that. I starte -
Growing our game: As numbers slip, Hockey Canada turns to new Canadians
The collective chatter grows to a deafening din, leaving no doubt this is a typical hockey dressing room filled with the elevated voices of children.
Listen closer, though, and one could hear conversations not just in English, but in Arabic.
This was Jim Durrell Arena on a weekday morning in late March, where some 80-plus pupils from Blossom Park and General Vanier public schools poured off yellow buses to participate in a unique skating program.
Nearly all of these grades 3, 4 and 5 pupils are -
Mainly sunny skies but risk of flurries or rain the forecast
If April showers bring May flowers, what do April flurries bring?
We may find out with a risk of either rain or flakes every day through next weekend in Environment Canada’s forecast.
Monday is mainly sunny – there’s even a UV index of 5 or moderate – but with increasing cloudiness by late afternoon and 30 per cent chance of overnight flurries. The high is 2 C and low -4 C.
For Tuesday, expect mainly cloudy skies, a 30 per cent chance of flurries or rain showers, a high o -
Eliminating anti-black racism in Ottawa: Progress is slow, but we'll get there
Progress rarely comes easily, or quickly enough.
That is certainly true about efforts to address local anti-black racism.
We reached a significant milestone in late March with the “Addressing Anti-Black Racism in Ottawa” Town Hall aimed at reviewing progress – honestly and head-on.
The town hall, which drew a crowd of more than 250, was one step in a long road that has included an initial community Forum on Anti-Black Racism in August 2016, and a subsequent report. Th -

Josée Touchette and retired general caught up in National Energy Board controversy targeting journalist
I recently returned from holidays to find that my former Postmedia colleague Mike De Souza, had been nominated for a Canadian Association of Journalists award for his investigative articles about the ongoing fiasco at the National Energy Board.
De Souza’s series of articles revealed concerns about the conduct of the NEB. For instance, he revealed that NEB management hired private investigators – on your tax dollar – to find out who leaked to him information that one of the top -
Canadians heading to RIMPAC could see Army artillery fired from USN decks
There could be some interesting sights during this summer’s Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) exercise for those Canadian military personnel taking part in the event. Canadian naval and air units will involved in this large-scale U.S.-led exercise, scheduled to start sometime in June.
My former colleague at Defense News, Kris Osborn, who is now managing editor at Warrior Maven, reports that the U.S. Army will be for the first time setting up their artillery on the decks of USN ships and firing f -

Judge stays charges in 2016 Ottawa alleged family feud attack because of Crown delay
An Ottawa judge has stayed charges in a vicious 2016 attack because the case took too long to get to trial.
Brothers Ali and Meshari Albadry, and their brother-in-law Fahad Alzuwaid, were arrested on May 22, 2016 after an alleged family feud turned violent on the streets of Ottawa.
It was a Sunday afternoon when, police said, three men targeted a family rival in a violent car chase. In two cars, police alleged, they chased the third along several city streets — including Walkley Road, Ledb
