Soldier's wife 'sad and frustrated' by high cost of sending morale-boosting packages overseas
With her soldier husband overseas with the Canadian Armed Forces, Nicole Code wanted to send a “care package” from home for him and his friends: Good coffee, trail mix to carry on patrol, current magazines to read in his isolated camp in a Mideast desert.
She was shocked to find it was going to cost her $96 in postage to send the morale-boosting box for her husband, Capt. Jeff Code.
“Actually, shocked is an understatement,” Code said from her home in Kemptville. &ldq -
Egan: Sorry was a hard word — life without Mom a harder sentence
Cornwall resident Robert Cadieux finally found his apology, after clawing — to the point of tears — through a justice system he didn’t understand.
Now comes the harder part: getting on with life without his wife, Kristine, and trying to shine light on an adversarial process that can shun victims and ignore the value of reconciliation.
Cadieux, 51, is still recovering from an accident on Highway 401 on June 28, 2017 that killed Kristine, 32, and left him with three children to r -
Camp Davern will be co-ed — with one week just for the girls — when it reopens in July
Camp Davern’s new owner plans to maintain the “historic elements” that made the camp “unique” when he reopens its doors in July.
The Maberly summer camp for girls closed in 2015 after 69 years of operation because of low registration. The YMCA-YWCA said in a letter that the decision to sell the property in 2017 caused an outpouring of stories from alumnae, staff and members.
The organization announced in February that Andrew Martin, owner and director of Camp Can-Aq -
Reevely: Police chief has Mayor Jim Watson's support, come what may
Mayor Jim Watson doesn’t want to hear anonymous complaints about Chief Charles Bordeleau of the Ottawa police. He wants unhappy officers to call their boss out publicly, so he can ignore their complaints in person.
The mayor’s energy for happy public events is properly legendary. You have to follow him on social media to see his id come out and snarl. It happened Tuesday night, after a meeting with Bordeleau about public safety. People keep getting shot. Watson has chosen not to sit -
Mosaïculture back to Gatineau for second edition this summer
The popular horticulture exhibit that took over Jacques-Cartier Park in Gatineau last year for Canada 150 celebrations will be back in 2018 — but you’ll have to pay.
The Quebec and federal governments announced that the exhibit — known last year as MosaïCanada 150, and run by Mosaïcultures Internationales de Montréal — will return June 24 to Oct. 15, lasting one month longer than last year.
Geneviève Ménard, the director of public -
Addition of Cuddy not cruddy but Bluesfest less fantastic with loss of Boombastic
After a three-year absence, Blue Rodeo will be returning to Ottawa’s RBC Bluesfest main stage.
Organizers announced the lineup addition on Wednesday. The band, led by frontman Jim Cuddy, will perform on July 12 in support of its new album, 1000 Arms.
Other acts added to the popular music festival’s lineup since it’s initial launch include Common Deer (July 8); Eat A Peach: Allman Brothers Band Tribute (July 12); Hunter Siegel and Chuurch, presented by Deadbeats (July 13); and L -

Wind warning issued for Ottawa area
A wind alert has been issued for Ottawa, with wind gusts expected to reach as high as 80 to 90 km/h late this afternoon or early this evening.
The winds could produce power outages, while damage to buildings, such as to roof shingles and windows, may occur. Loose objects may be tossed by the wind and cause injury or damage.
Rain and snow may accompany the wind, with a low tonight expected to reach -11 C.
Environment Canada urges people in the Ottawa area to take necessary safety precautions. The -
City hall blog: Ottawa Markets might have been just following city's own rules about busker insurance
Ottawa Markets found itself embroiled in controversy on Tuesday because it wanted to force buskers to have insurance if they wanted permits to perform in the ByWard Market.
It didn’t help (or it did help, depending on where you fall in the debate) that the Ottawa music strategy was up for approval at the finance and economic development committee.
In response to questions from reporters, Mayor Jim Watson called the busker insurance rule ridiculous. This is a city, after all, that’s t -

Pair nabbed in gunpoint robbery, kidnapping of Kingston woman
Kingston police say they’ve collared a man and a woman in their 20s after a woman was robbed at gunpoint, beaten and kidnapped before the male suspect — who was already wanted on a Canada-wide warrant — fired a stolen revolver several times then led police on a foot chase.
It began at about 11:30 p.m. on March 28 when the duo pulled a gun on the woman in the area of Amberdale Crescent, stole her jewelry and a tablet computer. She alleged suffered minor injuries in an assault, p -

Dismayed by sculptures’ return

Transportation committee approves LRT-era changes to Albert and Slater streets
Council’s transportation committee on Wednesday approved a redesign plan for two downtown streets as the city prepares to reduce the number of buses when the Confederation Line opens.
The bus-only lanes on Albert and Slater streets won’t be necessary when the LRT line is running through the tunnel under Queen Street in November. The number of buses cutting through the downtown will be reduced by half, and more in some locations.
Under the proposed redesign plan, separated bike lanes -
Kingston pair arrested in attempt to smuggle drugs into maximum security prison
Two Kingston men face a raft of charges after police foiled an attempt to smuggle a drugs and other materials into Millhaven maximum security prison.
Police said the arrests occurred last week when the two men were spotted at the main courthouse in Kingston.
Police and security watched as one man concealed a quantity of drugs and substances inside the building.
“The drugs were left with the intent that a federal inmate attending court could retrieve the drugs and deliver them to Mill -
Icy roads no deterrent for speeders, traffic police find
There’s no such thing as a snow day for Ottawa’s traffic patrol.
Despite the “icy” roads, Const. Jon Hall, who tweets as @TheBeardedCop, reported that he’d caught 15 speeders on Hunt Club Road well before noon Wednesday.
Most were clocked at over 100 km/h. Hunt Club includes 60 zones with major intersections so “when collisions happen here, they usually are big ones at those speeds,” Hall warned.
He tweeted a snap of one of the cars he stopped, adding a -
Moon: Pope's refusal to apologize for residential schools evokes a past tragedy
The Pope has declined to issue an apology to residential school survivors. The Canadian Council of Bishops reported that “after carefully considering the request” for an apology, the Pope “felt that he could not personally respond.”
Earlier this year, Pope Francis apologized in Chile for the sexual abuse of minors by priests: “I feel bound to express my pain and shame, shame I feel for the irreparable damage caused to children by some ministers -
A wind warning is in effect
So far, it’s not as bad as expected.
At least, not yet.
Granted, there is some snow to clear off of your car this morning (about five cm of wet snow fell in total) and some surfaces are a bit icy but we were spared heavy accumulation and completely iced-over roads.
Freezing rain could still hit parts of the city until late morning, so be wary of that as you make your way to work.
There’s also a wind warning in effect. Ottawa North, Kanata, Orléans, Ottawa -
Police ask for public's help to identify robbery suspect
The Ottawa Police Service is asking for the public’s help to identify a suspect who is believed to have been involved in a robbery outside a Centrepointe bank on March 19 at around 7 p.m.
According to police, a person tried to access a bank at 117 Centrepointe Dr. when they were approached by a man who demanded cash. Police did not provide any details about the incident after the man made his demand.
The man is described as black, standing between five feet seven inches and five feet -
Gatineau proposes to welcome dogs to more parks, but not all parks
A dog’s life in Gatineau will soon be a walk in the park.
Dogs today are banned from most of Gatineau’s 353 parks. But city hall wants to raise the number of dog parks from 25 to 258 — 10 times the current number.
At least, that’s the proposal. Some councillors wagged their tails approvingly this week, but the plan has to pass a council vote next month.
Naturally there will be rules involved, such as:
• No more than two dogs per human, or four in parks that are speci -
Glavin: Canada can lead on Myanmar, says Bob Rae. But will we?
It is sober reading, as you might imagine. Released Tuesday under the title “Tell them we’re human: What Canada and the world can do about the Rohingya crisis,” the 12,963-word final report by former Liberal foreign affairs minister Bob Rae, appointed Special Envoy to Myanmar last October, is a study in surrender.
This is not to say Rae’s assessment of the agonies endured by Myanmar’s brutally persecuted Rohingya Muslim minority is the work of a coward, or an exerci -
Denley: The PCs need to define the Ontario election – or they'll lose
Defining an election’s main issue is considered a precursor to victory for political parties. If so, things are looking up for the Ontario Liberals.
Their short and simple “care or cuts” slogan casts them on the right side of a good versus evil struggle. If that’s all people know going into the voting booth, June 7 will be a happy day for Kathleen Wynne.
The Progressive Conservatives haven’t exactly delivered a devastating critique of the big-spending Liberal budget -

Antiques: Timing great for clock set
Q: This clock and two candle holders were brought over from England by my father’s family who lived in Bristol and owned a general store there called “Christmas’s Store” as my grandmother’s maiden name was Christmas. The two side ornaments have tops that come off to hold a candle. The clock does work and I have the key and pendulum to make it work. It is extremely heavy and the feet have claws that go into holes in the velvet bases. It is 51 cm high (20 inches). I w -

During his vagabond life, David Morrison has worked as a teacher, technical writer, bank executive, mortgage agent, garbage collector, letter carrier and pizza delivery man.
So when he received a notice on his LinkedIn page, asking if he’d ever considered a career as an air combat systems officer in the Canadian Forces, he said to himself, “Sure, why not?” He had always wanted to serve — his father had been an army colonel — but Morrison worried that he didn&rs -
