Ever so briefly Tuesday morning, there was a plan afoot for buskers at Ottawa’s outdoor markets to buy their own liability insurance, lest something horrendous happen involving fresh carrots and bad Gordon Lightfoot.
Why had the state gone State Farm? The imagination gallops with possibilities.
The bare-chested, flame-tossing juggler who accidentally sets all those Ecuadorean mitts on fire, incinerates the cut flowers, flambés the whole mess with genuine maple syrup in an inferno th

Reevely: Wynne steps up fight against U.S. protectionism, a battle Ontario thought it had won
After years of vigorous trade diplomacy reminding American politicians how important free trade is to their state economies, Premier Kathleen Wynne is in a fighting retreat against New York state over rules against foreign iron and steel.
A law there banning those metals from public construction projects if they don’t come from U.S. suppliers kicked in over the weekend, prompting the Ontario government to retaliate by banning structural iron from New York in construction the province suppo -
Ottawa skip Steve Kot leaves legacy of curling prowess, highway luck
As a decisive curling skip, Steve Kot left little to chance.
One morning on the downtown Queensway, though, luck was his saving grace, giving Kathleen and Steve Kot the gift of another 19 years together. That precious time ended last Thursday, March 29, when Kot died at home of pneumonia, surrounded by family with love in their hearts and a prayer hymn in their voices. He was 93.
The Kots made local headlines on Feb. 3, 1999, when their Ford Taurus wagon was struck by a pickup truck, flew off th -
Rain, go away: Weather warning calls for freezing rain into Wednesday
The drive home Tuesday may be a messy one with a spring storm expected to bring freezing rain in the afternoon through to Wednesday.
Environment Canada said precipitation is likely Tuesday evening, starting off as wet snow or rain until shifting into freezing rain. It is expected to stick around overnight before tapering off Wednesday morning.
There’s also a chance of snow accumulation.
“There is still some uncertainty as to the exact track of the low pressure area, which is currentl -

Train automation is manager's biggest concern as city moves toward LRT launch
John Manconi, the city’s general manager of transportation, isn’t stressed about LRT stations, tracks and vehicles being constructed by the fall. His focus is on making sure computers can operate a train 12.5 kilometres across the city without a hitch.
Confirming that the train automation works will be a major milestone for the city, but it’s one Manconi says he worries the most about, since there’s complex technology involved.
The “communications-based train c -

'Turkey whisperer,' bird group rescue streetwalking hen from downtown traffic
It was a fair end for this fowl thanks to the “turkey whisperer.”
Ottawa got a gander at the gobbler Tuesday morning when word spread on Twitter that one had been spotted downtown. It took some intrepid bystanders and the Safe Wings Ottawa group to get the young hen safely out of traffic and into a wooded area near Shirley’s Bay.

Ottawa Markets changes tune on busking insurance as city 'music strategy' endorsed
Ottawa Markets, the arm’s-length organization that oversees the ByWard Market, changed its mind about making buskers have insurance on the same day a council committee endorsed a program to promote Ottawa as a “global music city.”
Maybe it was Mayor Jim Watson’s self-described “moral suasion” on Tuesday that convinced markets management to kill the insurance requirement.
“I was not happy when I saw we’re putting more red tape around creativity of s -

Cohen: Why does Canada just accept incompetence?
Less than a month ago, the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario chose its new leader. The process was cloudy and chaotic. In a word, it was a fiasco.
At different stages in the electronic balloting, the two leading candidates – Doug Ford and Christine Elliott – cast doubt on the legitimacy of the contest. Before he was declared the winner, Ford had warned of irregularities, seeking an extension of the vote. According to the National Post, he called the process “corrupt, un -

Be on the lookout for streetwalking turkey downtown
Got a gander of this gobbler?
It’s a bit late for Easter dinner but a wild turkey was spotted wandering downtown Ottawa Tuesday morning.
Safe Wings Ottawa, which works to protect wild birds, tweeted that the animal was in the area of Bank and Slater streets and asked bystanders not to chase it into traffic and to take care driving.

Wood: Consulting firms, including Canadian ones, must stop undermining democracy abroad
The principle that businesses must respect international human rights standards, including when operating in countries that don’t themselves do so, has been embraced by (among others) the United Nations, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, and multinational corporations such as Royal Dutch Shell, GE and Goldcorp.
In Canada, the principle is often articulated with respect to mining companies, whose activity abroad has at times infringed local employees’ an -

House Works: Brick veneer a great Canadian option
Masonry wasn’t my favourite homebuilding material when I got involved in building and renovation back in the mid-1980s. However, 30 years of dealing with reality has changed my mind. Brick veneer is the most common way brick is used in modern Can -
