When it comes to small businesses, the usual cry is one against regulation.
But for one band of Ottawa tow truck operators, regulation is exactly what they say they need.
A group of operators is looking to form a professional association for towing in Ottawa and is calling on the city to further regulate the industry, with fixed pricing and licensing operators. About 15 companies, including Jonny’s Towing, Rescue Towing Services and Express Towing, have signed on to form an associati

New heart institute expansion ready for patients
Easter Sunday was moving day for patients and staff at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute.
Fifteen patients from the heart institute’s intensive care unit were carefully moved down a newly built hallway connecting the original building with a new state-of-the-art critical care facility. The ICU patients were transferred from the building’s basement into light-filled single rooms that are a key part of the new building’s design.
The new tower, part of a $230 million expans -
Reevely: Hydro One will keep running its U.S. coal plant indefinitely, it tells American regulators
The Washington power company Hydro One is buying will be ready to close its huge coal-fired generating station ahead of schedule, thanks to conditions put on the corporate merger by state regulators there.
Not that we actually plan to do that, the company is telling other regulators in Montana, where the huge coal-fired generating station in question employs hundreds of people. We’ll be in the coal business for a good long time yet.
Hydro One, in which the Ontario government now owns a big -

New billboard up advises: #AskMelnyk
A fifth billboard attacking Ottawa Senators owner Eugene Melnyk went up Monday in Old Ottawa South, this one taking a new theme.
After four billboards went up last month with the message “#MelnykOut,” the new one suggests: “#AskMelnyk.” It’s near Bank Street and Riverdale Avenue.
The message is an invitation to Senators fans to ask questions at town hall sessions Melnyk has promised. Like the “#MelnykOut” message, this is the work of Spencer Callagh -
Spratt: Why the new justice reform, Bill C-75, is anything but just
Last week, Justice Minister Jody Wilson-Raybould unveiled her self-described “bold” criminal justice reforms. The legislation, Bill C-75, was billed as a silver bullet to unclog our courts and bring about a “cultural shift” in the justice system. The changes may be bold, but in this case the proposed reforms will likely result in more delays, more racial inequality and more unfair trials.
There is need of swifter justice in our courts. Dockets are overflowing and it can t -

Opinion: Bureaucrats and politicians limit public input on issues affecting veterans
By Sean Bruyea
Defence Watch Guest Writer
“Why are we still fighting certain veterans groups in court? Because they’re asking for more than we are able to give right now.” And with that, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau betrayed a key election promise for veterans.
Behind the scenes, the Trudeau government also continues a longstanding war on veterans in minimizing or denying access to democracy and due process.
On April 1, 2018, the Trudeau Liberals will implement th -

Small pets can ride on OC Transpo starting Monday
Monday is your pet’s first chance to ride on OC Transpo, but there are some conditions.
You can bring your pet on board if it is in a crate or carrying case, and the crate can sit on your lap.
Transpo checked around 18 transit systems in North America and found all but one allowed pets. The exception: Gatineau.
The pet ban in the past has caused hardship for people who rely on transit and who want to take a pet to the vet.
Beginning April 2 small pets will be permitted on @OC_Transpo buses -

Easter Monday's weather: cold. This week: Also cold
The week has started cold and it’s going to stay that way. There’s no way to dress this one up.
The warmest we’ll get looks like 4 C on both Monday and Tuesday, and then 5 C on Sunday. In between, we’ll have lower temperatures, including one day (Friday) with a high of -1 C.
There’s also a warning about freezing rain and/or snow Tuesday night into Wednesday.
For context, Environment Canada says the average high for this time of year is 7 to 8 C and the overage overn -
Roach: Ending peremptory challenges in jury selection is a good first step
As we approach the 50th anniversary of the assassination of Martin Luther King, it behooves us to recall this statement from Dr. King: “You don’t have to see the full staircase, just take the first step.”
When it comes to equality and juries, the first and necessary step is the abolition of peremptory challenges. These allow both Crown prosecutors and defence lawyers to exclude people from juries simply because they do not like the way they look.

Nussbaum: Here's why plastic bags shouldn't be in the green bin
The decision made last week at Ottawa Council to allow plastic bags in the composting stream is a short-sighted one on which I and two of my colleagues (councillors Jeff Leiper and Catherine McKenney) dissented.
Increasingly as a society, we are recognizing the costs of single-use plastic bags. At the production end, plastic bags are a non-renewable, petroleum-based product that take energy to produce – 12 million barrels’ worth worldwide each year. On the consumption side, these bag -
Gormley: 'Fake news' and 'inconvenient news' aren't the same thing
The news media, which has historically endeavoured to discern which of a politician’s statements are false and which are true, has been outmatched by the modern officeholder who is determined to discern which news item is fake and which is trustworthy.
This is not a fair fight, of course. The media could only ever deliver its judgments through speech; the politician now enshrines his in law.
But never mind! The matter before us isn’t about fairness in speech, says the man attem -

Just how much of your personal data is actually online? We take a look
What data do social media companies such as Facebook, Twitter and Google know about you and why does it matter?
It’s a question that’s become more relevant since the revelation that British consulting firm Cambridge Analytica may have mined the information available through social media channels to sway the outcome of the U.S. election in 2016.
The scandal and its fallout are shining a bright spotlight on the data that social media firms have been collecting.
And that should scare pe -
Historic sex abuse probe launched after stories surfaced at Bayshore Public School reunion
In May 2016, Bayshore Public School held a two-day celebration to mark its 50th anniversary with a picnic, a school mixer and an alumni soccer game.
The reunion drew a crowd of former students to the Woodbridge Crescent school, but not all of the memories shared that weekend were happy ones. At an evening house party, a group of former Bayshore students discussed their recollections of gym teacher and basketball coach Don Greenham and some of the rumours that attached to him.

Bonnell: Privacy is dead and we all helped kill it
It was the first mountain goat I’d ever seen.
There I am, outside Banff in Alberta, somewhere, smiling like an idiot, pointing to the lazy oaf and his mates chewing on the grass behind me.
Ah, memories. I got the chance this week, as so many people have, to retrace my digital footprints.
And I’ll admit it, I couldn’t help but to smile at the photos, conversations and searches so conveniently collected (and now readily available for download) care of Google, Facebook and Tw -
Bernhard: Canada must protect itself from big tech companies
In the wake of news that Donald Trump’s presidential campaign may have exploited the personal information of 50 million Facebook users without their consent, democratic governments around the globe are taking action to reign in American internet giants.
The U.S. Congress and the British and European parliaments have called on Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to explain why his company’s rules permitted such a flagrant breach of trust.
