Long-weekend family fun: Going out best bets, March 29 to April 4

There’s much to recommend Friday’s concert at Dominion-Chalmers United Church by Ottawa’s Thirteen Strings. At the top of the program are two concertos from Vivaldi’s L’estro armonico. To observe Good Friday, the chamber orchestra will perform Luigi Boccherini’s Stabat Mater, with Toronto soprano Nathalie Paulin rendering the piece’s thoughtful text about Mary and her suffering on Good Friday. The concert will also see the debut -
The strange math behind Bronson Consulting's $195 million lawsuit against the feds
At the heart of the large contract lost last month by Le Group Conseil Bronson Consulting of Ottawa was a strange anomaly.
Bronson and its partner, Cox & Kings Ltd., were prepared to charge nothing for the right to operate the government’s visa application networks around the globe. Instead, the government awarded this lucrative business to VF Worldwide Holdings and subsidiary TT Visa Services — which last month signed a five-year deal worth nearly $30 million.

Man accused of sexually assaulting women while riding OC Transpo gets bail and bus ban
The Ottawa man arrested on charges that he sexually assaulted women on city buses has been banned from riding OC Transpo while he awaits trial.
Mohamad El-Husseini, 37, won bail on Thursday after his first court appearance on four counts of sexual assault.
El-Husseini was released on bail conditions that require him to surrender his passport and stay clear of all OC Transpo stations and property — including future LRT routes.

Exclusive: Senior Ottawa officer alleges racism, discrimination by police chief in human rights complaint
An Ottawa police inspector who was repeatedly passed over for promotion has a filed a human rights complaint alleging that the chief of police discriminated against him because of his skin colour.
The police service, however, is defending itself against the “bald allegations” of racial discrimination by saying the officer was openly critical of Chief Charles Bordeleau and therefore “unfit” for promotion.

Provincial police have charged a New Brunswick man wanted on a number of warrants in connection with a wrong-way chase along Highway 401 Tuesday that resulted in a crash and injuries to a second driver.

Hunt: Where's Canada's voice on banning so-called 'killer robots'?
The world recently heard the sad news that one of the greatest minds of his generation, Dr. Stephen Hawking, had passed away. A brilliant physicist and cosmologist, Hawking revolutionized our understanding of the universe and brought insights from science to the masses through his bestselling books.
As well, in recent years Hawking often expressed serious concern that advances in artificial intelligence (AI) “could be a real danger in the not-too-distant future.” In 2015, he was one -

River authority expects minimal spring flooding
With little snowfall and higher temperatures over March, Rideau Valley Conservation Authority expects the majority of 2018 spring flooding in Rideau Valley may have already occurred.
Above-normal temperatures in the latter half of February resulted in a a huge amount of snow melting. With little snow and minor rainfall predicted in the upcoming forecast, RVCA anticipates there will not be enough runoff to cause any significant increase in Rideau Valley water levels.

Q&A: With Apron Strings, Jan Wong cooks up a different kind of book about food and family
Award-winning Canadian author Jan Wong’s formidable reputation is based on books that delve deeply and personally into China’s politics and culture, or, alternately but just as unflinchingly, skewer celebrities from Suzanne Somers to Mickey Rooney to Margaret Trudeau.
But with her most recent book, Apron Strings, Wong, turns her attention to food — specifically, home cooking in France, Italy and China. Of course, Wong went her own way when she tackled the subject. The book is f -

Adam: Yes, Wynne's promise of free stuff may very well change voters' minds
Wednesday’s provincial budget was the last throw of the dice by the embattled Liberals, a Hail Mary if you like, to seek a way out of the abyss and back into political contention.
The budget, with its billions in social spending, has been roundly criticized for what it is: a big play for votes in the June 7 election. But there is a reason the Liberals are doing it. They cannot hope to win an election in which change is the overriding theme. Kathleen Wynne has to find a way to change the co -
