There’s a man inappropriately touching women on OC Transpo buses, Ottawa police say, and they want your help in finding him.
In the past year the man has repeatedly taken a seat beside women on buses and brushed against their legs, touched their thighs with his hand, or touched their feet with his.
It’s allegedly happened more than five times, police say.

Lanark medical officer of health backs compromise on Almonte recreational trail
Lanark’s Medical Officer of Health has come out in favour of a paved trail through Almonte with a ban on motorized vehicles such as snowmobiles and all-terrain vehicles.
In a letter to Lanark County Council dated March 21, Dr. Paula J. Stewart writes she “strongly support(s)” the proposal from Mississippi Mills Council to keep the trail motor-free.
“A paved trail is the preferred surface for the more vulnerable population (better for cycling, wheelchairs, walkers, st -

Highly-rated Islamic school faces uncertain future with charitable status in jeopardy
The federal government has announced its intention to revoke the charitable status of the Ahlul-Bayt Centre, a non-profit organization that operates one of Ottawa’s top-rated elementary schools.
The decision, revealed in a recent Federal Court of Appeal ruling that rejected the centre’s attempt to delay the revocation, leaves the Ahlul-Bayt Islamic School facing an uncertain future.
The Vanier school has 160 students registered in junior kindergarten through Grade 8 -
City hall blog: Heat will be on households to recycle if city changes garbage rules
It’s becoming more difficult for anyone around city hall to deny that the rules for garbage pickup will change in the coming years.
“At this point, nothing is ruled out, nothing is ruled in,” Coun. David Chernushenko, the environment chair on council, said this week.
“I think with the lay of the land changing so dramatically provincially, I think we’ll want to look at everything from clear bags to tags to a very, very long list, but no one should read into that that -

Accused in Ottawa sex-shame attack says she and complainant had close relationship
The accused ringleader on trial for the 2015 kidnapping and sex-shame attack of a young Congolese woman testified on Tuesday that she treated the alleged victim like a daughter.
“She was like my daughter and I was like her mother,” Eunice “Chou Chou” Ilunga, 43, told court.
The prosecutor found her testimony hard to believe in the face of evidence that Ilunga threatened the alleged victim — telling her she was going to post videos of the attack online.

Squirrel nest in your attic? Here's why city squirrels are harder to scare away
Hear scratching, scurrying or a pitter patter in your attic?
At this time of year, that could be a squirrel mom, trying to keep her nest of brand new babies warm. Sean Robertson, President of Get ‘Em Out Wildlife Control in Ottawa tells us why city squirrels are tricky to get rid off, what works and what doesn’t.
“People will think ‘Oh, okay, I have a squirrel hole, might as well close that hole off and that will be the end of it.’ But the problem with that, i -
Reevely: $2.2B daycare announcement is Kathleen Wynne at her Wynnest
With their billion-dollar-a-year promise to make daycare free for Ontario kids from the age of two-and-a-half, the Ontario Liberals are reminding us what they stand for: bigger government that sincerely wants to help.
“Not being able to find or afford child care is stressful, it is troubling, and it is holding families back at a time when it’s already hard enough to get ahead,” Premier Kathleen Wynne said in making the announcement at a Toronto elementary school. “This in -

Frustration over traffic management emerges at planning committee
A councillor’s rejection of a site plan for a new subdivision off Lester Road drew grievances from colleagues on Tuesday about traffic management in the city.
The planning committee’s debate over the potential of installing traffic lights at Lester Road and Meandering Brook Drive, just off of Bank Street in the city’s south end, exposed more frustration about the rules the city uses to decide when roads should get traffic lights or stop signs.
In this case, Valecraft Homes plan -
Weekend swarming investigated as possible hate crime after man's turban removed and stolen
Police are investigating a possible hate crime after a weekend swarming near the Westgate Mall that “would appear to have racial overtones,” according to Staff Sgt. Mike Haarbosch.
Police said the male victim, who was not identified, had just left his workplace near the mall on Friday night at 11:25 p.m. when he was harassed by two men while waiting at a bus stop near the intersection of Carling Avenue and Merivale Road.
The victim was wearing a turban, and the two suspects, who are -

Today's letters: Sunshine List, gun crime and Eugene Melnyk
Are Sunshine Listers worth the cost?Re: Ranks of Ottawa’s $100,000 club number close to 9,000 for 2017, March 24
The sunshine list makes one sad, if not sick. Can someone please explain why hospital upper echelons are compensated between $450,000 and $700,000 a year and yet people wait hours in ERs, months for treatment and care providers are overwhelmed?

Cohen: What happens when the hotheads begin advising the president
With the appointment of John Bolton as national security adviser and the nomination of Mike Pompeo as secretary of state, Donald Trump has a pair of interventionist, dangerous foreign policy practitioners.
They join Peter Navarro, an unreconstructed protectionist, who is now a leading economic adviser to Trump. Together, they are America’s Three Horsemen of the Apocalypse.
Forget the sweet cautions of Rex Tillerson and H.R. McMaster. Amid the hothouse rhetoric of Bolton and Pompeo, they so -

Accused ringleader in Ottawa sex-shaming attack lied to police, court hears
Sometimes, James Cavanagh’s search for truth begins with a lie.
And it came during the Crown attorney’s cross-examination of the accused ringleader in a vicious 2015 kidnapping and sex-shame attack of a young Congolese woman.
The degrading attack was broadcast on Facebook in a series of graphic videos. The young woman, half naked, is seen crying as she’s berated for having sex with one of the accused’s boyfriends. In another video, the terrified woman, who was allegedly k -
Wark: The West gets tough on Russia. What's next?
Canada has now joined an international effort to punish the Russians for their role in the use of a nerve agent to poison a former Russian spy, Sergei Skripal, and his daughter, Yulia, in Salisbury, England.
Global Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland issued a statement on Monday, indicating that four Russian diplomats would be declared persona non grata for intelligence activities and that another three diplomatic positions would be denied to Russia.
This action was being taken, she said, in soli -
Prepare yourself for a week of rain and snow
It’s that time of the year.
That time of the year when almost everything imaginable is in the forecast.
Today is set to begin with some sun and the temperature will rise to 6 C – nothing wrong with that – but by tonight there will be wet snow or rain followed by drizzle and a low of 1C.
Oh, and you can also expect some overnight and early morning fog.
Tomorrow’s temperature sounds exciting – 9 C! – but some of that excitement might be dampened by the healthy d -

Roy: The Facebook affair shows democracy in peril
Over the past week, besieged by bad press and the prospect of fleeing users, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg grudgingly embraced traditional media to defend his new media empire. He acknowledged the company’s importance in democracy, pointing to upcoming elections in the United States, Brazil and India (to name but three). How has it come to be that a 33-year-old billionaire is viewed as imperilling not only individual privacy but also the legitimacy of democracy itself?
As a comp -
Richardson: Three ways the world is changing. Are we ready?
Recently I rented a car, visited a drug store and read a book. These three seemingly mundane events suggest to me that the world as we know it is over and that a new world is taking shape.
First, the car rental. I drive a basic stick shift, so it’s fun to step into whatever the rental company provides and check out the newest features. As I pulled into the street, another vehicle drove by and my car sounded a warning. It read the environment and alerted me to danger.

Protesters disrupt lecture by uOttawa 'anti-feminist' at Ottawa Public Library
A free speech advocacy group says it will reschedule a lecture by a self-described “contrarian, anti-feminist, defender of free speech and the right to dissent” whose talk at the Ottawa Public Library was disrupted by protesters on Saturday.
A group of about 20 demonstrators showed up for the planned lecture by University of Ottawa English professor Janice Fiamengo, whose speech was titled: “Is the university about the pursuit of truth or the protection of approved id -

Gun amnesty coming to Ottawa in April
If you no longer want the old hunting rifle in the basement or the Second World War relic from an ancestor, Ottawa police do want it. A lot.
The city’s police and Ontario Provincial Police will spend the month of April asking people to turn in old weapons before bad things happen to them.
“I think we all recognize the danger that guns pose on our streets,” Chief Charles Bordeleau said Monday. “We’re joining with the OPP, (which) is doing a provincewide gun amnesty.& -
Ottawa police begin planning for new station for south end in 2021
After decades of extending police stations east and west, the Ottawa Police Service is designing a new station to be built where the city’s major growth is: the south end.
The city’s fourth police station will be in the Lodge Road area, on the west side of the Rideau River south of Strandherd Drive.
Known for now as the South Campus, it is expected to open in 2021. On Monday, the city’s police services board approved the first phase of funding: $3.85 million to Moriyama and Tes -
Algonquin College to add study breaks, require full-time profs to teach more classes
Algonquin College plans changes to its academic year that would add study breaks in the fall and summer, reduce classroom time and require full-time professors to teach more classes.
The changes come as the college foots the bill for implementing the province’s new equal-pay law.
Many of the courses at Algonquin and other Ontario colleges are taught by part-time instructors, who are paid less than full-time professors. The Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Act (Bill 148) requires employers to p -
After pension 'bombshell,' Carleton University, striking support workers to meet with mediator
Carleton and its striking support staff have agreed to a one-day meeting with an outside mediator.
But even as news of the planned Wednesday sitdown emerged, tensions were simmering Monday over what the workers’ union called bombshell revelations about the pension plan that’s at the heart of the now-four-week-old strike.
The union local representing the roughly 850 striking says a review of amendments made to the plan has uncovered some “subtle manipulations” dating -
Reevely: Ontario's Green party is on the verge of a breakthrough, as usual
If Ontario’s Greens break through to elect their first legislator this spring, it’ll be in a riding like Ottawa Centre, their leader Mike Schreiner said on a pre-election swing through Eastern Ontario Monday.
“The ridings where we feel the strongest are ones held by a Liberal, or one of the new ones where there’s no incumbent,” he said. “And then if it has a university community … where there’s a strong sense of community and where there’s a
