An Ottawa candidate has made history as the first transgender person to represent a major party in an Ontario election.
Lyra Evans was nominated on the weekend as the NDP candidate for Ottawa-Vanier for the June 7 provincial election.
“I’m honoured to be the NDP nominee for Ottawa Vanier and the first openly trans candidate for MPP in Ontario’s history,” Evans wrote on her Twitter account right after the nomination. “It’s time to fight for prog

Committee votes 7-2 in favour of plastic bags and dog feces in green bins
The city thinks it can increase the diversion rate of organic waste from 40 per cent today to 63 per cent by 2023 if it allows residents to put dog feces and plastic bags into the green bin, but some councillors can’t support a new deal without seeing evidence underpinning the forecasts.
Councillors Jeff Leiper and Catherine McKenney voted against the contract changes on Monday, but seven other members of the environment committee backed a staff recommendation to expand the green bin progr -
First fries, now pop: Hospitals doing away with junk food, serving healthier fare
First, they got rid of their deep-fat fryers. Now, hospitals across the region have stopped selling pop and sugary drinks as part of a push to put their money where their mouths are when it comes to food and health.
Offering more healthy fare in their cafeterias, shops and vending machines has even proven popular.
Carolyn Brennan, chief financial officer at Queensway Carleton Hospital, said the hospital’s cafeteria increased sales by $200 a day when it began making changes such as getting -
Ministry issues stop-work order at Claridge construction site
The Ministry of Labour has issued a stop-work order at a Claridge construction site near Dow’s Lake after a worker was injured there on Friday.
It is the same site where a construction employee died two years ago.
Janet Deline, a spokeswoman for the ministry, said the order is specifically for all work related to “fall protection” at the Icon condo building. Work involving heights is halted, but any work done on the ground can continue.
Deline said it would be the decision of t -
Courthouse supervisor faces new harassment charge, seeks out-of-town trial
An Ottawa courthouse supervisor is facing a new charge of criminal harassment as court heard an application Monday to move his upcoming sexual assault trial to an out-of-town venue.
Timothy Patten, 44, was formally charged on Feb. 7 with one count of sexual assault, alleged to have occurred at the Elgin Street courthouse between November 2016 and Nov. 10, 2017, according to court documents.
An additional charge of criminal harassment covering the same time period, involving the same female -
Dispatcher helps coach woman over the phone as she gives birth
An Ottawa paramedic dispatcher helped coach a woman over the phone as she was giving birth on Sunday afternoon.
A call came in from the city’s south end at 12:20 p.m., said Supt. Matthew Galarneau on Monday.
Garlarneau said Ashley, the dispatcher whose last name was not released, was able to calmly relay instructions to a family member, who then passed along the directions to the woman giving birth.
A healthy baby girl was delivered about 10 minutes after the call came in.

Ottawa Capital Pride appeals to 'engaged youth' for new advisory committee
Ottawa Capital Pride is looking for “engaged youth” between the ages of 15 and 25 to help form a new youth advisory committee.
The organization says the new committee will help provide knowledge and guidance on policies affecting LGBTQ2+ youth.
According to Capital Pride on Monday, the committee will give members an opportunity to “develop their own ideas and help with the mission of advocacy and public education.”
The committee also may have the opportunity to coun -
Ross-White: How you can show support to someone who has lost a baby
All of Ottawa, and all of the hockey world, have been devastated by the sad news that Erik Karlsson and his wife, Melissa, have lost their baby.
She was expected to deliver mid-April, but instead of planning a joyous delivery, the young couple find themselves planning a funeral. None of us, least of all young, healthy couples, expect such an outcome. What can you say or do for someone when faced with the most devastating loss of their lives?
It is estimated that as many as one in four pregnancie -
Man and woman face charges after Gatineau drug bust
Gatineau police arrested a man and woman after seizing a cache of drugs from a Hull residence around 11 a.m. on Thursday.
After receiving a tip, police searched a property at 15 Duquesne St. in Gatineau and discovered 337 methamphetamine tablets, 632 grams of cannabis, 11.5 grams of cocaine, 25.8 grams of hashish, as well as wax, an unknown white substance and $3,790 in cash.
A 24-year-old man and a 26-year-old woman — both from Gatineau — were arrested. The man was detained, while t -
Rich, delicious fare in abundance at Signatures' 2018 Goût de France dinner
In the annals of French gastronomy, few if any tall-toqued chefs stand higher than Paul Bocuse, the Lyon-based great who collected Michelin stars and taught a legion of younger chefs before he died in January this year, at the age of 91.
Given Bocuse’s achievements, it was only fitting that his food was feted last week at Signatures Restaurant in Sandy Hill participated in the fourth annual global “Goût de France” initiative celebrating French cuisine. This year’s c -
Ifill: Ottawa lacks an actual plan for tackling anti-Black racism
A recent panel discussion on anti-black racism at city hall was chock full of platitudes but lacked credibility and was absent serious prescriptions for tackling the racism black people experience in Ottawa.
Last year, the City for All Women Initiative (CAWI) and Ottawa Local Immigration Partnership (OLIP) published a report on the prevalence of anti-black racism in the city’s public institutions. It detailed two major concerns: the need to recognize anti-black racism and assign institutio -
Today's letters: Ignore Don Cherry – and look to Phoenix
It may be that Phoenix is to blame for the Senators’ attendance woes, says one letter writer. Another says the anti-gun legislation the Liberals have proposed isn’t about stopping crime. On-ramp from Carling to Queensway permanently closes Monday
The eastbound on-ramp to the Queensway from Carling Avenue — just west of the Westgate Shopping Centre — closed for good on Monday.
In a planned widening of Highway 417 between Maitland Avenue and Island Park Drive, the Ministry of Transportation announced the closure of the “low volume” ramp last week.
Frequent commuters in the area took to Facebook to voice their opinions, ranging from indifference to anger.
While some agreed with the decision to get rid of the underuse -

In the final hours of his son’s life, Francis Moran kept a newspaper article close by for comfort.
It had been written by another Ottawa father and acquaintance, Michael Curran, and told a story heartbreakingly similar to what the Moran family was enduring in a Hamilton intensive care unit. The two Ottawa families were devastated by their similar tragedies just a few months apart.
Both had 20-year-old sons who suffered traumatic brain injuries that would prove fatal: Emerson Curran, a Unive -
Man charged with stunt driving after passing ambulance with lights on
A 21-year-old man from Nepean has been charged with stunt driving, after he allegedly sped by an ambulance with its emergency lights flashing on Highway 7.
On Monday around 3:39 a.m., an officer from the Central Hastings OPP stopped an eastbound car allegedly driving at 153 km/h in an 80-km speed zone near Jarvis Lake Road, in Madoc Township Ont.
Police said the car overtook an ambulance with its emergency lights on. The township is about a two-hour’s drive west of Ottawa.

McManus: Why Canada doesn’t need a national identity
Justin Trudeau’s recent trip to India inspired a wave of commentary from across the ideological spectrum, with some critics arguing – based both on his wardrobe choices and his itinerary – that he was effectively demonstrating a lack of fidelity to Canada’s own national identity. Some connect this lack of fidelity to a deeper ignorance of, and even dismissal of, the very idea that Canada has a national identity.
It is easy to understand these kind of arguments -

What is cardiac death and how can it allow for organ donation?
What it is: Cardiac death (or circulatory death) refers to the irreversible loss of function of the heart and lungs.
How does organ donation after circulatory death work? In Ontario, patients who meet the criteria for donation after cardiac death are critically ill and dependent on mechanical ventilation. Donation is a possibility for families who have decided to withdraw life support after receiving a diagnosis that there is no long-term prognosis for recovery of their loved one.
What are the l -
What is 'brain death' and how does it factor into organ donation?
What it is: Under Canadian guidelines, it is defined as the irreversible end of all brain activity due to permanent loss of blood flow and oxygen to the brain.
What it is not: Brain death, or neurological determination of death, is not the same a vegetative state or coma, in which patients continue to have brain activity.
Where it came from: It was defined by an ad-hoc committee at Harvard University, which characterized it as: a non-functioning brain; total unawareness to external, or painful s -

Whyte: Good boundaries make for a good workplace
It seems one of the most common comments about the movement to bring the reality of sexual harassment into the forefront is that so many people are being falsely accused.
I believe there are claims made against people who didn’t mean to harass, but the claims are generally legitimate and based on behaviours in the workplace. Ignorance is no defence if your behaviours give the wrong impression and someone feels harassed. It doesn’t matter if you are male or female, it’s your res -
Enjoy the sunshine: clouds and showers are headed our way by mid week
Enjoy the gorgeous sunshine on Monday, because cloudy weather and showers are headed our way by mid-week, says Environment Canada.
Monday dawned bright but cold, with a -5 C temperature during the morning commute that felt more like -9 with the brisk wind. The temperature is expected to climb to a balmy 6 C by Monday afternoon, though, with sunshine.

A life turned on its head by 35 years of post-concussion symptoms
Art Pallen suffered his brain injury back in the caveman era of concussion treatment.
Which means little or no treatment at all. Pallen had it all going at the time — 30 years old and newly married to Debra, they made beautiful music together, literally, playing in local bands, often alongside stylish lead guitarist Bobby Lavigne. Debra sang like an angel and played bass guitar. Art was a drummer.
In his day job, Pallen was an artist under the hood, known as one of the best engine tune-up -
Fight brewing over Ottawa green bins and banned coffee pods
A company that produces compostable coffee pods received a rude awakening last week after learning that Ottawa plans to keep banning the pods from city green bins.
“We were furious,” says John Pigott, chief executive officer of Club Coffee.
The city announced last week it has restructured its green-bin contract with Orgaworld to allow plastic bags and dog feces to be included in the organic waste Ottawans send to a plant in rural south Ottawa.
As proposed, the expanded list of items -
Sorting through the medical maze of concussion care
Jane Clark recalls how difficult it was just to travel to her family doctor’s office while suffering concussion symptoms.
Once there, she had to answer pointed questions “through the haze and pain” of a concussion, about what she was experiencing.
“Without scans or bio-markers, it falls to the injured patient to convey the condition,” Clark told a capacity crowd of about 150 at the inaugural concussion march Saturday afternoon.
