Nearly 9,000 workers whose Ottawa-based organizations receive funding from the Ontario government made at least $100,000 in 2017, according to the annual salary disclosure published Friday.
At the top of the local “Sunshine List” is Jack Kitts, president and CEO of The Ottawa Hospital, who pulled in $630,485 in salary and $69,108.37 in taxable benefits. Kitts, who has headed the hospital since February 2002, has the 23rd highest salary on the province-wide salary disclosure.

Liberals announce $1.8 billion for new Ottawa Hospital while testing election message
Liberal cabinet ministers road tested Friday what promises to be a central election message — that a Progressive Conservative government would put important spending promises at risk — as they announced $1.8 billion for a new Ottawa super hospital.
The commitment, announced at a celebratory news conference at The Ottawa Hospital’s Civic campus, will be included in next week’s provincial budget.
That pre-election budget would also add $38 million to the an -
As inflation continues to march upward, so do the number of public servants on the 'Sunshine List'
The number of people on the annual public sector salary disclosure list has ballooned again this year, as annual raises and the effects of inflation on salaries continues to push up the average pay of public sector government workers.
According to experts, “you ain’t seen nothing yet.”
In 2017, there were a total of 131,742 people on the annual public sector salary disclosure list, which is more commonly known as the “Sunshine List.” The number was a 5.9 per ce -
Indigenous hip-hop star on healing after school racism
As a student at St Matthew’s High School in Orléans, Cody Coyote was accustomed to taunts, to having his ponytail pulled, to being told he was ugly and that he didn’t belong.
But the word that cut deepest was “savage.”
“You hear that word? Stop using it,” Coyote told a crowd of about 150 mostly Indigenous students at a symposium Friday hosted by the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board.
“That was the word that stung. It was the word that made me -

Ottawa woman keeps fighting to help end the stigma surrounding endometriosis
Carine Boustani says that in order to give the most honest description of endometriosis, getting into the graphic details of the condition is necessary and unavoidable.
“I feel like my pelvic area is being stabbed with metal spikes that are on fire and that I feel a constant hard blow to my stomach that, on many occasions, makes me feel faint,” the 24-year-old Ottawa woman said on the eve of Worldwide Endometriosis March 2018. “Nausea, chronic fatigue, pain -
NAC preview: The Illusionists's Colin Cloud on what inspired his mind-reading career
When Colin Cloud was a child growing up in the small Scottish village of Harthill, he found the inspiration for what he would do with his life while playing hide and seek in his school’s library.
“I’ll never forget looking up and seeing a book cover, with this guy wearing a silly hat, smoking this weird-shaped pipe,” Cloud remembers.
That image was enough to prompt him open the book, and by chance he found himself reading about Sherlock Holmes and his uncanny ability to k -
Blood samples from Ontario newborns studied at CHEO to help babies worldwide
Blood samples taken from Ontario newborns and analyzed at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario are helping improve the health of tiny babies in developing countries around the world.
A research program, funded with a $1-million grant from the Gates Foundation, will help identify the gestational age of newborns in low-resource countries, which will allow for public health measures to prevent pre-term births, considered an urgent international health challenge.

Juno-nominated Kapri credits time spent in capital along her road to success
Juno-nominated singer, songwriter and choreographer Kapri credits her time spent in Ottawa for helping her “discover” her voice.
But it was her upbringing — by a single mom with Trinidad and Tobago roots — in Edmonton that developed her passion for performing.
Kapri was introduced to singing and dancing at a young age when her mom opened Alberta’s first contemporary Afro-Caribbean dance school. As a young girl, Kapri would watch the performers practise. After high sc -

Native species flex their mussels in battle against zebra invasion
There’s good news for lakes and rivers despite the wave of zebra mussels across Eastern Ontario: Native mussels that are an important part of our fresh waters are fighting back.
In some cases, they smother their attackers to death while surviving themselves. But their ability to do this depends on having the right conditions — specifically, the right kind of sediment.
“There is some clear evidence along the Rideau River of refugia for native freshwater mussels against zebra mus -

Bantey: Is it harassment when a journalist pursues a source?
A journalist’s job is often to ask tough questions of public figures and to give them an opportunity to respond. But when does that questioning turn into stalking or criminal harassment?

Trépanier had been conducting an investigation of Yvonne Dubé, the head of the Gatineau chapter of the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization. Dub -

Gormley: Worried about privacy? We have hardly any left anyhow
That companies are abusing private data is unsettling. More unsettling still is that enough private data has been made public to abuse.
After Cambridge Analytica was found to be exploiting the data of Facebook users, it is not quite enough to blame the company that grabbed personal information from individuals. Nor is it quite correct to blame the individuals who left it lying out in the open only for it to be grabbed. A company has harmed individuals, but it was helped along by individuals who -
Kurl: Jagmeet Singh can rebound, but has a lot of work to do
It has been uncomfortable, to put it mildly, watching the leader of a major national political party appear to spend more time explaining his views about another country’s domestic policy than espousing domestic policy related to his own.
The Jagmeet Singh saga also raised thorny issues. Is it racist, or inappropriate, to question the NDP leader about his feelings toward dealings with elements of the Sikh separatist movement? How well do journalists cover and understand Canada’s mino -

Gananoque in the running as permanent home for Canada 150 rink: Official
GANANOQUE — Gananoque is on the short list to receive the Canada 150 skating rink once it is dismantled on Parliament Hill later this month, according to the town’s recreation director Terry Gilmer.
The federal government doesn’t want to store the rink once it is taken down so it has been shopping it around to local municipalities, Gilmer said.
Gananoque, about 170 kilometres south of Ottawa on the St. Lawrence River, is one of the towns interested in the rink, although th -

Closure of eastbound ramp from Carling to Queensway raises commuters' hackles
The announcement that the eastbound on-ramp to the Queensway from Carling Avenue, just west of Westgate Shopping Centre, will close permanently drew online outrage and anxiety on Thursday.

Netflix communications with Canadian government shielded from public
As governments around the world grapple with how to tax online companies, the Canadian government is refusing to release more than 250 pages of communication it exchanged with a company at the heart of the debate in this country: Netflix.

Radio-Canada reporter won't be charged after harassment complaint
A Radio-Canada reporter arrested for allegedly criminally harassing the executive director of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Outaouais will not be charged, Gatineau police say.
Reporter Antoine Trépanier was summoned to Gatineau police headquarters and arrested on March 13 after he emailed executive director Yvonne Dubé about interviewing her for a story he was working on.
Crown officials said Thursday they reviewed the case and came to the conclusion no crime was committed.
