The city doesn’t want dirty diapers in its green bin program, but in a few years it might not have a choice.
The city is in the midst of amending its contract with Orgaworld — the company responsible for handling Ottawa’s compost — and plans on keeping diapers and other sanitary products out of the green bin. But that possibly doesn’t align with provincial plans, with Ontario eying a move to get diapers out of the regular waste stream as early as 2022.&nb

Ottawa school board facing $8M in lawsuits after sex abuse claims, former basketball players share their stories
The Ottawa-Carleton District School Board has been named in four separate lawsuits seeking $8 million in damages for sexual abuse that former students claim to have suffered at the hands of gym teacher and basketball coach Donald Greenham.
Greenham, 75, died of a heart attack earlier this month at his home in Addison, near Brockville, two months before he was to stand trial on 54 counts of indecent assault, gross indecency and issuing threats.
The charges involved 14 former students, some -
The devastation of stillbirth: Symptoms sometimes similar to PTSD
Erik and Melinda Karlsson’s painful public statement about the death of their son, Axel, this week has shone a spotlight on stillbirth — a devastating loss that has long been hidden in the shadows.
“We feel very lucky to be Axel’s parents. Even though he was stillborn, we know we will hold him again one day under different circumstances and the joy he gave us will be with us forever,” the Ottawa Senators captain and Melinda wrote in a statement released along with a -
Carleton's student medic team seeks levy from grad population
A few weeks ago, Connor Fyfe was working a night shift as a volunteer student medic at Carleton University when a call came in. Somewhere in residence, an unnamed student was having a mental health emergency.
Remembering his new mental health first-aid training, Fyfe jumped into action. When his team arrived at the scene, they quickly assessed the patient’s condition to ensure they were not in any danger.
“We were able to determine that that person was not in a state where they were -

Tests sponsored by PSPC showing high legionella levels may be unreliable, says PSPC
Public Services and Procurement Canada doesn’t accept data suggesting cooling systems in some federal buildings have high levels of legionella bacteria, saying that while the department sponsored the research, it believes the testing technology is still unproven.
This week an Ottawa company said its DNA testing, which it stands by, found unexpectedly high levels of the bacteria that can cause legionnaires’ disease, a form of potentially lethal pneumonia.
The bacteria can grow i -
CÉGEP foresees high demand for courses to certify workers for cannabis industry
Gatineau’s CÉGEP de l’Outaouais is aiming at becoming the first post-secondary institution in Quebec to train technologists and technicians to work in the cannabis industry.
The CÉGEP has teamed with the medical cannabis producer Hydropothecary in Masson-Angers, which is providing the workplace data and analysis to demonstrate the growing need for trained workers, said the CÉGEP’s director of studies, Jacqueline LaCasse.

'Ottawa is with you' — Tributes pour in for Erik and Melinda Karlsson after tragic loss of couple's stillborn son
The Ottawa Senators’ extended family, its fans, and the hockey world at large took a pause Tuesday to rally around one of the sport’s brightest stars in a time of unimaginable grief.
Tributes poured in from Ottawa’s hockey community and beyond after it was announced Senators captain Erik Karlsson and his wife Melinda had lost their child, who was stillborn.

Today's letters: The Delwin Vriend case, the statue of Buddha
The other heroes of the ‘Vriend’ case
Re: How the Vriend case made legal history, March 18.
Delwin Vriend is rightly characterized as the reluctant hero of this tale. As plaintiff in this landmark case, he provided the facts that propelled it to the Supreme Court of Canada.
However, one has to wonder how far those facts would have gotten him without the willingness of Sheila Greckol to represent him on a pro bono (without charge) basis. Lawyers such as Greckol, and the other me -
'One-man crime wave' ends with robbery collar: police
Patrol officers collared a suspect Tuesday in connection with a citywide string of robberies.
Staff-Sgt. Michael Haarbosch of the robbery and break-and-enter units took to Twitter to hail their work shutting down what he dubbed a “one man crime wave.”
It totaled four robberies in which the suspect claimed to be armed – although no weapon was seen – and two burglaries.
Some great work yesterday by Frontline officers brings a one man crime wave to an end. Multiple rob -

How Carleton University's pension fight could affect us all
I write as a concerned faculty member during the third week of the CUPE 2424 strike at Carleton University. The labour dispute, as the administration calls it, provides an object lesson in the workings of institutional power. But the politics of this power and the economies on which it relies are not quite as self-evident as the administration might have us believe.
The university wishes to expunge from CUPE 2424’s collective agreement language that prevents the Pension Committee and the B -

Glavin: We're off to Mali – but it's a meagre commitment
With the announcement this week that Canadian peacekeepers will be headed to Mali, perhaps as soon as August, Canada has finally come around to something like a consummation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s election campaign vow to revive this country’s purportedly starring role as champion and avatar of the United Nations’ blue-helmeted peace warriors.
With the long-awaited decision finally made, it should be useful to step back a bit for a clearer reading of the UN’s -
Denley: Ontario can't afford more spending
Andrea Horwath and Kathleen Wynne like to say their election platforms provide a stark contrast with the approach of Progressive Conservative leader Doug Ford. Let’s hope they do, because the public needs an alternative to the onslaught of unaffordable spending and debt that the NDP and Liberal leaders are promising.
Take pharmacare as an example. It was an NDP idea filched by the Liberals when Wynne brought in drug coverage for young people at an estimated cost of $465 million a year. Now -

Rifle-toting Kingston woman arrested after guitar and boiling water attack on suspected cheating husband
In a case straight out of a classic country tune, a 45-year-old guitar- and gun-toting woman was arrested in Kingston Monday after allegedly hunting down a man she heard was doing her wrong, and the woman he was supposedly doing it with.
Police said the suspect became enraged when she was told her husband was up to no good and tracked him down at a friend’s residence.
She hit him a number of times with the guitar and, when people in the home tried to rush her out, she grabbed a pot of -
"You can hear a nugget of happiness that is just waiting to explode" — The Sharon Minemoto Interview
Vancouver jazz pianist Sharon Minemoto is fulfilling a bucket-list wish this weekend, even at considerable expense to herself.
Without the support of touring grants, the 44-year-old and her quartet play three gigs in Central Canada, beginning with Friday’s night concert at GigSpace in Ottawa.

Weather: Relatively mild and sunny in Ottawa as Toby threatens northeast
After that cold snap, Ottawa’s forecast of mainly-sunny skies, a high of 1 C and an actual UV index (it’s 4, or moderate) feels decidedly spring-like.
And after a winter of wacky weather, take a moment to feel lucky.
As we think about sunscreen, our neighbours are bracing for yet another nor’ easter heading towards the U.S. northeast and Atlantic Canada. Toby is the fourth winter storm in a month.
The Ottawa airport was already reporting cancelled flights to New York City, -

Last Friday a government source or sources outlined details of a Cabinet decision to send Canadian military helicopters and personnel to Mali. The leak came three days before Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan and Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland made the official announcement.
Naturally you would expect the Liberal government to launch an investigation into who leaked such sensitive – and arguably secret – military information to journalists.
That is, of course, what happened -
