How do you thank a person who saved your life?
That is a question that has been running through Stuntman Stu Schwartz’s mind for months since he learned he would be meeting his anonymous bone marrow donor for the first time.
Schwartz, a Majic 100 morning radio host and Ottawa Senators home game announcer, was diagnosed with leukemia in February 2016 and after aggressive treatment, he learned he would need a bone-marrow transplant within three months. After an exhaustive search locally and

The nation's capital has given birth to some of the 5G revolution
The governments of Canada, Ontario and Quebec are partnering with some of the world’s digital heavyweights to usher in the next generation of wireless technology.
A $400-million public-private investment will create a corridor of 5G wireless test beds through Canada’s two largest provinces, aimed at giving companies a chance to experiment with new ideas and products that are only now becoming possible thanks to recent breakthroughs in telecommunication technology.

Cops seize around 1,000 alcoholic drinks on St. Patrick's Day
Ottawa police said they seized about 1,000 alcoholic beverages, fielded 10 service calls for noise and issued 31 provincial offence notices on a busy St. Patrick’s Day on Saturday.
Police and bylaw teams teamed up to canvas neighbourhoods like Sandy Hill and the ByWard Market for the “community safety education initiative” between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m.
Most of the provincial offence notices were for alcohol consumption on public property or trespassing, said police.

Citizen journalists claim two National Newspaper Award nominations
The Ottawa Citizen was nominated for a pair of National Newspaper Awards on Monday, with Christina Spencer earning a nod for her editorials, and Ashley Fraser honoured in the feature photography category.
Spencer, who became the Citizen’s editorial pages editor in 2016, had previously covered all levels of government as a reporter and editor, in the process developing expertise in many federal, provincial and local matters.
She won a National Newspaper Award in 1998 for her international r -
City hall blog: OC Transpo monitoring Presto fare gate problems in Toronto
The Toronto Transit Commission is having problems with fare gates that work with Presto cards. It’s not great news for OC Transpo, since the transit agency in Ottawa uses a similar fare gate made by the same manufacturer.
The Toronto Star reported last week that the TTC paused the installation of fare gates while it works out problems with the hardware and software. There seems to be a high failure rate of the motors in the gates, which is obviously a problem if customers are tapping their -
Legionnaires' bacteria levels higher than thought in some federal buildings
An Ottawa company that tests for infection-causing bacteria says the germs that cause Legionnaires’ disease went above acceptable levels in more than one-third of federal government buildings it sampled last summer.
Four of the 51 buildings tested were at least 10 times over the limit for Legionella bacteria. One building was at least 100 times over the limit.
But none of the buildings are being publicly identified by Public Services and Procurement Canada, which sponsored the resear -
Ottawa councillors want better city response if spring floods return
City of Ottawa officials aren’t expecting a repeat of the devastating spring floods that swamped outlying communities along the Ottawa River last year, but they have assembled a task force, just in case.
Councillors who represent the hardest hit areas during the spring 2017 floods say they hope the city has learned a lesson from last year’s shortcomings.
“Last year, despite repeated requests from the community and my office, it took the city administration several days to respo -
VIA Rail given funding for new fleet in Quebec City-Windsor corridor
The federal government will offer funding to help VIA Rail replace its fleet in the Quebec City-Windsor corridor, which includes its trains in Ottawa, Transport Minister Marc Garneau announced Monday.
New trains are expected to be running by 2022, according to VIA Rail. The national passenger service will soon be launching a request for qualifications, followed by a request for proposals.
The unspecified amount to replace the current Quebec City-Windsor corridor fleet was proposed in the r -

Local author Marnie Fossitt recounts adventures of rural life
WINCHESTER — Marnie Fossitt remembers her grandmother’s terrible fear of thunderstorms, she remembers being wrapped in quilts with her three sisters when one would hit, and just listening.
“She’d tell us stories about her life — she was a real character,’’ Fossitt said of her grandmother, just before the first-time author’s book launch and reading on Saturday afternoon in Winchester.
Many stories about her grandmother are lovingly told by Fossitt, -

It will take more than a few Canadian choppers to help Mali
The Canadian government has now set the stage to claim a Schwarzenegger-style “We’re back!” after finally confirming our long-delayed contribution to United Nations peacekeeping in Mali. But after spending a year in the West African nation, I’m doubtful about what 200 soldiers and a few helicopters will achieve.
Canada’s long association with peacekeeping and reputation as a calm presence in the world’s hot zones has taken a serious hit in recent y -

Don't let the city off the hook over Prince of Wales Bridge, group tells transport minister
A group advocating for the Prince of Wales Bridge is asking federal Transport Minister Marc Garneau to not let the City of Ottawa off the hook so easily when it comes to the interprovincial crossing.
The grassroots Ottawa River Bridge (ORB), which has a core group of about five people organizing the effort, wrote to Garneau on Monday suggesting that the federal cabinet shouldn’t rescind an order from the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA).

Sajjan says 2 Chinooks, 4 Griffons going to Mali – Vance says no decision yet on helicopter numbers
Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan announced Monday that Canada will send to the United Nations mission in Mali two Chinook helicopters and four armed Griffon helicopters to escort them. Carleton strike resumes as mediated talks break down
Striking Carleton University support staff returned to the picket lines Monday morning after university and union negotiators met with a mediator for 14 hours Sunday until talks broke down.

An optimist, eh? Robert J. Sawyer talks about 'the Canadian example' and the problem with Star Wars
Does the future belong to Canada?
It does the way Robert J. Sawyer writes it.
The Ottawa native has been called the godfather of science fiction in this country. There’s a reason: His books bleed Canadian red and white.
A recent novel was set in Winnipeg and Saskatoon, drawing on everything from a Jets playoff game to the Canadian Museum of Human Rights to the imagined election of Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi as Canada’s next prime minister.

Canadian Forces hospital to stay in Iraq until early 2019
The Canadian government is still figuring out how to further contribute to the Iraq mission. But in the meantime it has extended the Canadian military commitment to lead the Role 2 Medical Treatment Facility in Erbil, Iraq, until March 31, 2019. This extension is in response to a request from the United States, the Department of National Defence stated Monday.
The current Canadian commitment to Iraq is the following: An air mobility Detachment comprised of a CC-150 Polaris aerial refueling -
If you've been enjoying the cold weather then tonight is going to be a blast
The good news?
It’s going to be sunny.
Today, tomorrow, and really all through the week we should expect bright, clear skies.
The even better news?
Today is the last full day of winter.
Tomorrow at 12:15pm we can officially say hello to spring.
Winter, however, is not leaving without a fight.
Facing work or school for the first time in a while today? You’ll have to deal with very non-spring-like temperatures with a high of only -3C.
Tonight expect the temperature to fall quickly off -

Today's letters: Cycling, science and a change of language
Room for both LRT and bikes
With all the foofaraw over whether or not bikes should be allowed on the Confederation Line of the LRT, and what the impact might or might not be on parking, the town of Nunspeet in Holland might afford some perspective. This small town near Utrecht, appears to have no problem finding space for both bikes and cars.
The photo above was taken in 2017 on a bike tour in Holland which afforded many opportunities to enjoy a quiet drink, in an outdoor patio where the on -

Taman: Here's why Jim Watson is wrong about a women's bureau
In an article published nearly 30 years ago, Bertha Wilson – the first woman appointed to the Supreme Court of Canada – provocatively asked: “Will Women Judges Really Make a Difference?”
The legal profession then was struggling not just with how diversity on the bench should be achieved, but why.
Conventional wisdom of the day argued there was no benefit to increasing diversity among judges, since the very nature of their job meant they were already committed to being imp -
Sabo: OK, fast food totally has us hooked
Pass by any Tim Hortons drive-thru in peak morning hours and you’ll wonder if anyone still knows how to pour a bowl of cereal or toast a bagel. Or see how every garbage can in any pedestrian mall is a mountain of takeout coffee cups and other fast-food waste.
They own us, these food outlets. The essential arm candy for Canadians is neither a micro mini clutch nor a signature tote; it’s a cup of coffee.
We’ve become a “need java now” society. We buy a -
Coroner orders review of Indigenous teen's care at CHEO in days before her suicide
The coroner’s office has ordered a quality-of-care review at CHEO in the case of a 13-year-old Indigenous girl who had been admitted to the hospital four times in the days leading to her 2017 suicide at an Ottawa group home.

Fundraising goal for Vice Admiral Norman set at $200,000 as officer heads to court
As Vice Admiral Mark Norman heads to court, a fundraising effort to help the officer with his legal bills has been increased to $200,000. Retired army colonel Lee Hammond of Vancouver had originally set up a GoFundMe account with a goal of raising $50,000.
The fund quickly reached its original goal.
But after Norman was charged by the RCMP in relation to the alleged leak of information about a Liberal government plan to derail a project to provide the Royal Canadian Navy with a new supply s -

When being stopped is no longer cool
The Violence 360 campaign rolled into Ottawa Sunday morning, the fourth stop on a provincial tour that has included Windsor, Hamilton and Toronto.
Financed by the government of Ontario under a $47-million, four-year Black Youth Action Plan, the campaign is designed to prevent incidents of violence by sharing stories on social media about people’s experiences.
On the eighth floor of Shopify’s global headquarters, nearly 50 youths, mostly black, listened to local entre -
