One dog is believed to have drowned and first responders are searching for another dog in the woods after a water rescue call Saturday near Upper Duck Island, just east of the Canada Aviation and Space Museum.
Ottawa Fire Services said they received a 911 call around 3:45 p.m. for a person and dog in the water. Another person was standing on the ice unharmed.
Upon arrival, fire crews found the person in the water had rescued themselves, but the dog was believed to have drowned. Crews were s

Algonquin College suspends seven of its programs
Seven programs run by Algonquin College at its Perth, Pembroke and Ottawa locations have been suspended because of low enrolment.
For the fall 2018 term, the Perth campus will suspend two office administration programs, a social service worker program, a masonry program, and a carpentry and renovation program.
A power technician program at the Pembroke campus and a kitchen and bath program at the Ottawa campus will also be suspended.
Algonquin said the approximately 200 students already en -
Canadiens owner's 1930 retreat overlooking Meech Lake restored as boutique hotel
What was once the getaway of the industrialist owner of the Montreal Canadiens opens later this month as an intimate 11-room boutique hotel with a serene Canadiana vibe and sweeping views of Gatineau Park.
Long-empty O’Brien House, built on a promontory overlooking Meech Lake for J. Ambrose O’Brien in 1930, has been revived and rechristened simply as O’Brien.
It opens March 30.

RCAF aircraft critical to support of Operation NUNALIVUT
About 350 Canadian Forces members are taking part in Operation NUNALIVUT 2018. The annual sovereignty operation in the High Arctic is being held this year in Resolute Bay and Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. Op NUNALIVUT 2018 started February 23 and will wrap up March 21.
Air transport, of course, is critical to most operations, but particularly in the Arctic. Operation NUNALIVUT used CC-177 Globemasters and CC-130J Hercules to transport troops, supplies, and equipment to Resolute Bay and Cambridge Bay. -
Gatineau man dies in head-on collision on Highway 148
A Gatineau man is dead after a car driving the wrong way down Highway 148 collided head-on with another vehicle near Lochaber, Que. early Saturday morning.

Where's the tallest tree in Ottawa? It's complicated
The towering giant of Rochester Street — a 115-foot cottonwood tree — will meet its demise sometime in the near future, brought down amid a roar of chainsaws.Given its age, 115 years, and fears that branches as large as telephone poles may at some point fall onto houses below, the tree’s owner decided it was time to cut the cottonwood down. When that happens, a community landmark will disappear — the tree is already being mourned in the area, with an Irish-style wake plann -

Radio-Canada incident: Freedom of press important — but so are rights of victims, Gatineau police chief says
Gatineau’s police chief led off a news conference about the arrest of a reporter for harassment by saying he wouldn’t discuss any details of the case.
What followed instead on Friday afternoon was 40 minutes in which Mario Harel went back and forth on press freedoms and promises to let reporters work freely, followed by the word “but.”
“In no circumstance do we wish to interfere with a journalist doing his work or to restrict the freedom of the press,” Ha -
Ottawa sees spike in number of homeless families
A huge spike in the number of chronically homeless families last year has forced the city to rent more motel rooms, giving parents and children emergency shelter.
The city is preparing to launch a review of its 10-year housing and homelessness plan at the midpoint of the program, which started in 2014. A report to council’s community and protective services committee sets the stage for the review, with updated statistics on the number of homeless people in Ottawa.

St. Paddy's Day weather: May the wind(chill) be at your back
This weekend’s temperatures with windchill are a bit more suited to January than mid-March, but skiers and families finishing off March Break will be delighted.
(For those taking part in St. Patrick’s Day shenanigans, not so much.)
On the plus side, Saturday will start out mostly sunny, with clouds moving in later today, with a few flurries. The story is in the winds, at 30 km/hour gusting to 50 this morning, but lightening up later Saturday afternoon.

Egan: Ottawa abortion protester, fixture at Bank Street clinic, dies of heart disease
Cyril Winter was probably the most reviled and admired figure on Bank Street, the man with dead babies around his neck.
Winter, 70, the city’s most dogged pro-life demonstrator, died in hospital on March 9, only days before his first court appearance for violating Ontario’s new law providing a bubble zone around abortion clinics.
Friends and family say he did not survive a procedure to insert stents in his failing cardiac system.

Celebrating Rochester Street's giant cottonwood tree: 1901-2018
There was the time Lynn Griffiths found four small boys in her backyard tree, near the north end of Rochester Street. The tree was a towering old eastern cottonwood. The boys were bad boys.
“I had just bought the house. I was single and I came home one day and there were a bunch of kids in the tree,” she recalled this week. She didn’t know any of them.
They had taken apart her clothes-drying rack and ripped some pickets off her fence and nailed the pieces on the tree to build s -

One dead in Clarence-Rockland fire
The fire marshall and provincial police are investigating a fatal fire in Clarence-Rockland on Friday.
