Where's the tallest tree in Ottawa? It's not an easy question to answer
The towering giant of Rochester Street — a 115-foot cottonwood tree — will meet its demise sometime in the near future, brought down amid a roar of chainsaws.Given its age, 115 years, and fears that branches as large as telephone poles may at some point fall onto houses below, the tree’s owner decided it was time to cut the cottonwood down. When that happens, a community landmark will disappear — the tree is already being mourned in the area, with an Irish-style wake plann -
Rochester Street's cottonwood, 1901-2018: 'It’s really a love story: woman and tree, and tree and neighbourhood'
There was the time Lynn Griffiths found four small boys in her backyard tree, near the north end of Rochester Street. The tree was a towering old eastern cottonwood. The boys were bad boys.
“I had just bought the house. I was single and I came home one day and there were a bunch of kids in the tree,” she recalled this week. She didn’t know any of them.
They had taken apart her clothes-drying rack and ripped some pickets off her fence and nailed the pieces on the tree to build s -

City records spike in homeless families as it assesses midpoint of 10-year plan
A huge spike in the number of chronically homeless families last year has forced the city to rent more motel rooms, giving parents and children emergency shelter.
The city is preparing to launch a review of its 10-year housing and homelessness plan at the midpoint of the program, which started in 2014. A report to council’s community and protective services committee sets the stage for the review, with updated statistics on the number of homeless people in Ottawa.

After Canada 150 celebrations, city 'protocol' spending hits seven-year high
City hall’s protocol office spent more than $250,000 on hosting official events last year, exceeding the amounts spent in each of the six previous years, partly because of the importance placed on Canada’s 150th birthday.
“The types of events hosted, rather than the number of events hosted, will impact the total cost,” protocol chief Cathy Bowles said in an email. “2017 marked the nation’s sesquicentennial year which resulted in some unique opportunities.&rdqu -

But the suspect forced himself into the apartment and then allegedly sexually assaulted the woman insid -
'We just can't keep up with demand': New funding addresses growing need for sexual violence support
Ontario is considering introducing restorative justice for sexual violence and harassment cases, Attorney General Yasir Naqvi said Friday.
As part of its gender-based violence strategy, the Ontario government said it will study restorative justice — which focuses on the rehabilitation of offenders through reconciliation with victims — as an alternative to the court process in some sexual violence cases.
“What we have heard is that the traditional justice system may not be the m -

Freedom of press important — but so are rights of victims, Gatineau police chief says
Gatineau’s police chief led off a news conference about the arrest of a reporter for harassment by saying he wouldn’t discuss any details of the case.
What followed instead on Friday afternoon was 40 minutes in which Mario Harel went back and forth on press freedoms and promises to let reporters work freely, followed by the word “but.”
“In no circumstance do we wish to interfere with a journalist doing his work or to restrict the freedom of the press,” Ha -

Ottawa police are asking for the public’s help to identify a woman suspected in the alleged fraudulent purchase of high-end autos.

While the National Capital Commission has repaired and re-opened most of its pathways damaged in last spring’s great flood, the Voyageurs Pathway in Gatineau isn’t expected to be ready until the summer.

Editorial: Jagmeet Singh's political dilemma
Whether Jagmeet Singh endorses Sikh separatism – or any other kind – isn’t a major scandal. Politicians the world over have their views of sovereignty movements, and voters react accordingly. Whether, however, Singh endorses terrorism, is. So this week he clarified himself, telling Postmedia he accepts the conclusion of the Air India inquiry, which said Talwinder Singh Parmar masterminded the 1985 terrorist attack that killed 329 people.

Strickland and Kuzmyk: Why #MeToo is EXACTLY what we need
The following is in rebuttal to a March 10 article entitled “Why #MeToo is Not For Me”:
In her article on the #MeToo movement, Iris Winston wrote that “truly courageous women would speak out at the time of an incident” and that they should be responsible enough to bring forward civil action, “allowing the man in question the opportunity to face his accuser in court and defend himself.”
These statements, in our opinion, are written from a place of ignorance of -
Boil water advisory in Pontiac after breakdown in water treatment plant
Pontiac in western Quebec is advising residents using the municipal aqueduct network to boil their water for at least a week and a half.
A critical piece of electronic equipment broke down and the municipal treatment plant could not operate without it, Pontiac said in a bulletin on Thursday.

Gormley: Confronting Russia means protecting ourselves
To a crime that could only have been committed by Russia, democratic governments can respond in any number of ways. Many responses would be justified. Few can be counted on to inspire better behaviour. A few more might inspire it to behave even worse.
Countries can issue statements that unequivocally condemn Russia’s unacceptable attack on British soil; Sergei Skripal, a former Russian double agent and his daughter Yulia, were poisoned with Novichok, a nerve agent, on March 4. Europe, Cana -

Egan: Busted wheelchair after flight puts brakes on man's Cuban getaway
Darrel Scott had a serious stroke 12 years ago — collapsed outside on a frigid winter night — and had to relearn the basics, like write and hold things with his wrong hand, at age 53.
To this day, his right side is compromised, making his electric wheelchair a lifeline.
In this week of March break, when half the world is on the go, he is retelling his travel misadventure from last fall, a saga not yet over.
After research about the resort, he booked a one-week trip to Varadero, -

MacDougall: Trudeau is spending your money like you don't care. He may be right
If you think spending is easy and saving is hard, you should try doing it with other people’s money.
Justin Trudeau is firing the federal spending cannon with scant regard for the nation’s finances. The Liberals are betting heavily that taxpayers won’t care how much federal dosh is being spent, or when their government plans on stopping.
Sadly, they’re probably right. Even this week’s bizarre revelation that a 2017 spending review failed to turn up a single, solitar -
Deachman: The end times? N'yet. Or, how I learned to stop worrying and love the Kremlin.
Only weeks ago, scientists reluctantly moved the hands of the Doomsday Clock forward 30 seconds, to two minutes before midnight, a proximity to mankind’s annihilation unmatched since 1953, when the U.S. and Soviet Union set off thermonuclear devices in their respective test kitchens.
We’ve never been closer to the figurative end of the world than this, although it should be noted that these same scientists, or at least ones just like them, have been known to bend the hands of time ba -
