Three years after breaking ground, the University of Ottawa Heart Institute is set to open a 145,000-square-foot facility that it calls the “latest and most sophisticated in Canada.”
Official opening of the tower will take place next week, although renovations to older parts of the Heart Institute will continue for several years.
The new building includes an additional 27-bed critical-care unit, five operating rooms, one hybrid operating room, labs and space for expansion. It is part

A scaled-down 2018 Montebello Rockfest lineup announced
Lamb of God, Cannibal Corpse and Steel Panther are just a few of the bands in this year’s Montebello Rockfest lineup.
The festival, which takes place June 14-16 in the Quebec village about an hour northeast of Ottawa, features rock, metal, alternative, hip hop and punk bands. Many recognizable performers and up-and-coming bands will be taking the stage, according to Rockfest creator Alex Martel.
“It’s going to be amazing,” Martel said. “It is a pretty crazy vibe. We -

Gatineau to implement new rules about garbage disposal
Gatineau residents will be expected to reduce the amount of their bi-weekly waste disposal to 120 litres starting July 15.
On Tuesday night, Gatineau city council approved new rules to the municipal collection service with the intent of banning large volumes of compost and recyclable materials that make their way into the trash.
The city plans to fine households that exceed the 120-litre limit.
Apartment dwellers will also be encouraged to begin composting. The city plans on visiting apartment u -

Patient of doctor facing sex charges frustrated by fee to transfer family's files
Patients of a University of Ottawa Health Services doctor accused of sex crimes are “free” to find a new family doctor elsewhere, says the clinic. But making the switch will cost them.
Marie Noreau, a longtime patient of the criminally charged Dr. Vincent Nadon, says she was told it would cost $250 to transfer the medical records of her family of six to a new doctor. That’s $50 for the first file and $40 for each subsequent file.

The 'park's heartbeat': Beloved tree in Perth to come down Thursday
For many decades, the iconic tree named Jessie has been a friend to the residents of Perth, comforting them with shade on hot summer days and providing a familiar presence every year during the Stewart Park Festival.
On Thursday, however, locals bid farewell to their treasured companion, which has towered over Stewart Park with its thick branches and rough, mossy bark. The silver maple tree has been deemed a safety hazard by arborists and must be cut down.
“I think of (Jessie) as the park& -
Small-lot intensification anxiety extends to Orléans as city plans LRT extension
Intensification on small lots is no longer a concern specific to established urban neighbourhoods. The suburbs are starting to feel the same anxiety with the expansion of LRT.
An application by Danzac Holdings for 840 Balsam Dr., at the corner of Jeanne D’Arc Boulevard in Orléans, was approved by the committee of adjustment last month, even though one resident collected 38 signatures from neighbours opposing the plan, which calls for a second bungalow on the land.

Opioid overdoses down, but officials say too soon to link with naloxone, injection sites
Six months after a spike in opioid overdoses raised alarms across the city, the numbers are down. But Ottawa Public Health says it is too soon to claim any victories in the opioid crisis.
According to preliminary public health statistics, drug-related emergency room visits have dipped from more than 40 a week in September to closer to 25 a week in late January. Monthly opioid overdose emergency room visits have steadily declined since last summer.

A strategic approach to startup success
Marketing maven Erin Bury has seen it all when it comes to the do’s and don’ts of launching a new Canadian business venture into the crowded online market space.
As the managing director of Eighty-Eight, a top-flight Toronto-based creative communications agency, Bury says she sees many emerging entrepreneurs make the same predictable mistakes by charging out of the gate with no real understanding of who their target customers are, or even how to reach them effectively. It’s a c -

Glavin: In Syria – and everywhere else – champions of liberal democracy have failed terribly
It was seven years ago this month that the bright hopes of a nonviolent, democratic revolution erupted in people singing and marching peacefully in the streets of Syria. Since then, seven decades’ worth of solemn UN covenants, international treaties and binding conventions have gone up in flames in the hell hole of corpse heaps, concentration camps and ruined cities that the Baathist mass murderer Bashar Assad has been permitted to make of his country.

Denley: Doug Ford needs an election platform. Here's one
New Ontario PC leader Doug Ford is looking for a short and simple platform to carry his party to victory in the June provincial election. That’s just the right approach.
In recent years, political parties have typically opted for a catalogue of promises in an attempt to give something to every interest group and demographic. At some point, it just gets silly. Under former leader Patrick Brown, the PCs were promising to spend up to $19 million a year to subsidize snow tire buyers.

Snow problem causes big change of plans for sci tech museum addition
The designers of the new Canada Science and Technology Museum knew that one job stood out: this time, they had to keep out the rain and snow.
Years of chronic roof leaks doomed the old museum as water and mould crept through the building.
The crumbling roof dropped bits of asbestos on visitors and staff. It dripped water onto artifacts. An evaluation in 2014 warned that a winter with 25 centimetres of snow could even make the roof cave in.
Patch after patch failed to fix it until finally enginee -

Brunet and his wife, Helene, have been charged with -
