Another roof problem: Plans for science and tech museum addition scrapped after design flaw discovered
The designers of the new Canada Science and Technology Museum knew that one job stood out: this time, they had to keep out the rain and snow.
Years of chronic roof leaks doomed the old museum as water and mould crept through the building.
The crumbling roof dropped bits of asbestos on visitors and staff. It dripped water onto artifacts. An evaluation in 2014 warned that a winter with 25 centimetres of snow could even make the roof cave in.
Patch after patch failed to fix it until finally enginee -
Aggressive tow truck drivers nailed 148 times in 2017
Ottawa police wrote 148 tickets in 2017 under a city bylaw that targets aggressive tow truck drivers, adding to the hundreds of other violations recorded in the previous two years.
The city’s only enforcement tool against pushy tow operators is a bylaw provision that requires them to keep a 100-metre buffer from a crash scene, unless they’re called by motorists, police or insurance companies. The bylaw stops tow trucks from pulling right up to the banged-up vehicles to start selling -
Transpo determines what caused blips in next-stop system, leading to $25K fine
OC Transpo has figured out why its next-stop announcement system wasn’t working on some buses when federal inspectors went for rides around Ottawa last November.
Transportation general manager John Manconi provided the reasons in a memo to council on Tuesday. In one case, a bus left before its scheduled start time and threw off the automated system for the first few stops. In another case, the internal speakers on the bus weren’t working properly. The remaining case was a “tech -

Researchers detail spike in complex pneumonia among Eastern Ontario children
Cases of complex pneumonia among children in Eastern Ontario spiked between 2002 and 2015, according to a new study led by researchers from CHEO.
That sharp rise in hospital admissions among previously healthy children — three to four times higher than in previous years — followed public funding of a new childhood vaccine that covered seven strains of pneumococcal bacteria. The spike may have partly reflected the influence of pandemic H1N1 influenza in 2011 — severe flu seasons -

Ford says he wouldn't touch public service jobs. That's more than 30 per cent of provincial spending
Progressive Conservative Leader Doug Ford says he wouldn’t cut government jobs in trying to find “four cents on the dollar” in savings if he’s elected Ontario premier this spring.
That leaves a huge amount of money off the table if a PC government wins power, inevitably leaving Ford scouring operating expenses to find — not cuts, he says — “efficiencies,” without a carbon-tax backstop on the revenue side.
In an interview Tuesday on CBC Ottawa Morni -

Two men face charges after drive-by shooting and police pursuit
Two Ottawa men are facing multiple charges in a drive-by shooting after a driver fled from officers before the vehicle was stopped near Heron Road and Riverside Drive.
Ottawa police received a 911 call reporting shots fired from one vehicle into another on Hartleigh Avenue in the west end just before 9 p.m. Patrol officers then followed what they believed to be the suspect vehicle through Centretown and the Glebe before stopping it past Carleton University.
No one was injured in the shooting.

Summerlee: Boost international trade by boosting female entrepreneurs
As Canada moves forward with the “constructive and compassionate” foreign policy promised by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government, two issues that require our collective attention and action are gender parity and international trade relationships. Despite changes initiated by the #MeToo movement, women — in virtually every field and sector around the world — continue to be treated differently from men. Meanwhile, uncertainty around global trade frameworks -
Cohen: The Ford factor – Maybe we're not better than Americans after all
Historically, Canadians have thought themselves morally superior to Americans. It has been this way since 1867, when we became Canadian, largely out of fear that if we did not we would become American.
Feeling superior today allows us to believe we are immune to the kind of populism convulsing the United States and Europe. We’re different, we assure ourselves, more moderate and progressive. It can’t happen here.
Doug Ford, the new leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontar -
We're running out of resources to help victims of Syria's 7-year war
Last week marked the seventh anniversary of the war in Syria, and there is no end in sight. Progress towards a negotiated solution has become, once again, very elusive. In just the first two months of 2018, intense fighting has taken a high toll on civilians across Eastern Ghouta and Idlib province. It almost erased from our memory that the second half of 2017 had seen a re-escalation of violence countrywide to new heights, including from military campaigns that toppled the Islamic State in Iraq -
Man, 75, charged after OPP drug raid
A 75-year-old man is facing multiple charges after police seized an estimated $230,000 in street drugs in North Stormont Township.
On Monday, the OPP conducted a search warrant on a property on County Road 15, about 60 km southeast of Ottawa. Police said they found 34 pounds of marijuana, 30 pounds of hash, 50 pounds of cannabis shake, methamphetamine pills and a gun.
Gerard Sauve has been charged with trafficking a controlled substance, unauthorized possession of a weapon, violating probat -
Kiff: Can Doug Ford attract Franco-Ontarians?
With Doug Ford now at the helm of the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party, it remains to be seen whether the controversial choice made by the party membership will be endorsed by the electorate on June 7. Some speculate that the PCs have made themselves less attractive to the centrist voters who represent a majority in the province.
Yet poll after poll has shown that Ontario is ripe for change after 15 years of Liberal rule. A Forum poll conducted the day after Ford’s election as party -
#MelnykOut billboards slated for city streets starting March 19
The frustrated Ottawa Senators fan who launched the #MelnykOut campaign targeting the team’s owner has announced where he’ll be erecting a series of billboards starting next week.
Spencer Callaghan, the Senators fan who raised $10,327 on GoFundMe “to let Eugene Melnyk know that we have had enough,” announced Monday that the campaign has secured dates and locations for the billboards.
They’ll go up March 19 for two weeks at Ogilvie Road near St. -
Today's letters: Doug Ford's PC leadership, Ontario's debt
Contradictory political choices
Re: It took some time, but Ontario PCs finally announce Ford as leader, March 11.
Voters of today really confound me. First, they elect as our prime minister a youngish man who has accomplished nothing in his own right, and who talks constantly about the “middle class, “about which he knows absolutely nothing. Now Ontario Progressive Conservatives elect as leader a wealthy businessman who is constantly harping about “the elites.” Is not a w -

Kaplan: Government budgets are becoming mere branding exercises
The use of silly budget titles and even sillier rhetoric has been a bipartisan effort over the last decade, but it has found new life under Justin Trudeau’s Liberals. Budgeting under Trudeau and Finance Minister Bill Morneau has become less a detailed outline of how the federal government plans to spend taxpayer money, and more an exercise in political messaging. We’ll soon see if that’s also true with the provincial Liberals’ budget, expected later this month.

Police warn drivers to be cautious in snow after pair of crashes
Police are reminding people to drive carefully during snowfall after a pair of collisions in Ottawa Tuesday morning.
The first crash happened between two small cars and an SUV on Mitch Owens and Boundary roads in the south end of the city. Police were advising drivers to avoid the area while they removed the vehicles from a ditch. All drivers were treated by paramedics and released on the scene.

House Works: Your questions on basement floors, Heat recovery ventilators
Q: What’s best for ventilating a tight Canadian home that develops window condensation, an HRV or an ERV?
A: The short answer is that an heat recovery ventilator (HRV) is the best given our cold winter temperatures. The reason is because and HRV has much more power to reduce indoor humidity levels in your home. An HRV brings in a stream of fresh outdoor air, it exhausts stale indoor air outdoors, and it preserves most of the energy invested in heating your home. Condensation that wo -

And the forecast is… snow, snow and more snow.
Environment Canada is predicting 5 cm will fall Tuesday, then 5 cm overnight capped off with another 5 cm Wednesday.
