William “Bill” Teron was, among other things, a developer, a building innovator, a patron of the arts, a philanthropist and a senior public servant.
But to many, he was nothing less than a visionary with a grasp of both the sweeping picture and the small details.
Teron was the last surviving member of the “big three” developers of postwar Ottawa who helped to shape the rapidly-expanding city, along with the Greenbergs of Minto and Robert Campeau. Teron ha

City missed a chance to make train names more diverse, critics say
Critics say the city had the opportunity to select more diverse names for its Confederation Line LRT and Trillium Line trains, judging by the full list of nearly 2,000 entries submitted by children.
Community organizer Rachel Décoste and Jeremy Dias, the executive director of the Canadian Centre for Gender and Sexual Diversity, wrote to Mayor Jim Watson last month criticizing the lack of diversity in the 40 winning entries selected by the city. Twenty other people from the community also -

Reevely: Doug Ford promises business subsidies by another name
Businesses can expect an end to corporate welfare if Doug Ford gets to be premier. They’ll have to get ready for tailored tax-incentive packages instead.
Do these sound like kind of the same thing? Yeah, getting a handle on what the new Progressive Conservative leader stands for is a bit of a job. Maybe the next three months, until the June provincial election that could make him premier, will be different from the six weeks of the Tory leadership campaign.
Take industrial subsidies, a meg -

Montreal Dining Diary I: Montréal En Lumiere and a waste-free dinner at Le Blumenthal
Each winter for the last six years, I’ve come to get my hopes (and appetite) up in advance of attending Montréal En Lumiere.
For food lovers, the annual culture and gastronomy festival gathers many more restaurants than you could possibly attend during its two-week run under its organizational and promotional umbrella. As a guest of the event, I’ve been spoiled for choices each year and reliably had some very memorable meals that featured the creations of visiting chefs from a -

On Thursday, March 8, Upper Ottawa Valley OPP arrived to the scene and found a man and a three month old inside the residence. The occupants of the home were sent to hospital for precautionary measures. No injuries were reported.
Police said the explosion was the result of a “clandestine drug laboratory,” and search warrants were -
OPP targets distracted drivers in March Break campaign
Ontario Provincial Police will be cracking down on inattentive drivers with a distracted driving campaign starting Monday until the end of the week.
For a fifth consecutive year, distracted driving remains the deadliest cause of road fatalities, with 83 deaths on OPP-patrolled roads in 2017. That number surpasses speed-related, seat belt-related, and alcohol and drug-related deaths for the year.
Since Ontario distracted driving laws took effect in 2009, there have been 692 fatalities involving d -

Trottier: Trump is woefully unready for talks with North Korea's Kim
The announcement that Donald Trump had agreed to a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un caught everyone, including the U.S. Secretaries of State and Defense, South Korean envoys and North Korea, by surprise. It was classic Trump: Act first and think later.
His decision was driven by Trump’s impulsive personality, a reality TV view of the world, an obsession with doing the opposite of past presidents and the conviction that he is an unmatched deal-maker. This was not part of a long-t -
Ottawa research team gets to the marrow of astronaut missions
It’s not easy to sell NASA and a group of astronauts on the merits of a particular study.
Pitches come from all over. Months prior to a space mission, astronauts will eyeball a list of proposed studies to undertake en route and check them off with a pen: yes, no. Yes. No.
Fourteen astronauts, as well as NASA and the Canadian Space Agency said YES to a group of Ottawa researchers currently undertaking the first space-related study of bone marrow.
Led by principal investigator Dr. Guy Trudel -

Sick leave skyrockets among teachers, classroom aides in Ottawa public school board
Ottawa’s public school board is struggling to figure out what to do about teachers and classroom aides who are increasingly calling in sick.
The average number of sick days taken by employees at the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board has soared by 38 per cent over the past four years, from 7.85 days in 2012-13 to 10.87 days last school year.

Nepean-Carleton MPP Lisa MacLeod
“I just had to endure a very tense and turbulent eight weeks, and before that things weren’t always the best, either, in terms of the political corruption that we were contending with.

Opioid outreach worker: 'There are tragic stories behind these women'
Ottawa midwife Amy McGee has been known to meet pregnant women who are dependent on opioids almost anywhere. At home, on the street, in a coffee shop. Even in jail.
Most of her patients don’t have a family doctor. Many also don’t have a health card, and so have no way to access health care. They often need bus passes, a stable place to live and food security.
“The system is nearly impossible to navigate without support. There are so many ways to fall through the cracks,&r -
How one hospital is helping the mothers and babies caught up in the opioid crisis
As the time came near to have her baby, Rebecca Dowds was terrified the newborn would be snatched away by child welfare authorities.
Dowds was dependent on prescription opioids.
It was October 2015, but since 2013, she had been taking Percocet, a narcotic pain reliever containing a combination of oxycodone and acetaminophen, to treat spinal pain and sciatica. With the help of her obstetrician, she had weaned herself from six to three pills a day. “I got stuck at the three-pill point,& -
Ottawa research team gets to the marrow of astronauts mission
It’s not easy to sell NASA and a group of astronauts on the merits of a particular study.
Pitches come from all over. Months prior to a space mission, astronauts will eyeball a list of proposed studies to undertake en route and check them off with a pen: yes, no. Yes. No.
Fourteen astronauts, as well as NASA and the Canadian Space Agency said YES to a group of Ottawa researchers currently undertaking the first space-related study of bone marrow.

When delivering health data means lying down on the job
In theory, it sounds like the perfect job.
Lie around all day and get paid for it.
Be careful what you wish for. Volunteers for a study in Toulouse, France had to lie face down, in a bed, 24 hours a day for two months, providing a range of medical data, including the impact of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant supplements on immobile subjects.
The study, which had similarities to the ongoing Ottawa MARROW study, was backed by the European and French Space Agencies interested in extrapolating the
