The riddle of why one type of dinosaur fossil is usually found upside-down led Jordan Mallon down many paths, and ultimately to hot Georgia roads and their bloated roadkill armadillos.
Mallon is a paleontologist at the Canadian Museum of Nature and sees plenty of fossils. But he kept wondering about the ankylosaurs, the armoured tanks of the dinosaur age.
If you find an ankylosaur fossil it’s usually upside-down, whether it’s the little cat-sized ankylosaur from China or the elephant

Man charged with five assaults after woman says she was kicked on Rideau Street
An Ottawa woman is warning others to be vigilant after she was allegedly kicked by a complete stranger – who then recorded her shock on his phone – in an unprovoked attack Tuesday on Rideau Street.
Police confirmed they’ve charged Mustafa Khoshnaw of Ottawa, 26, with five counts of assault after they investigated a string of complaints from people walking on Rideau.
Stephanie McLeod, 32, said she was walking home from work along Rideau Street when a man “made a quick U-tu -
'Huge move forward' means more patients will be cured of hepatitis C, Ottawa doctor says
Until recently, Dr. Curtis Cooper has been forced to tell some patients with hepatitis C to — in effect — come back when they are sicker. Costly drug therapies were available to cure the potentially deadly virus in just a matter of weeks, but under provincial rules, they were only funded for patients with more severe cases of the liver disease. Which meant many patients had to wait, and some just never came back.
“You would say, ‘We have great therapies that would cure yo -
Herrndorf to get GGPA award on his last day at NAC
More than 25 years ago, the National Arts Centre’s outgoing boss, Peter Herrndorf, was one of the people who first proposed the idea of a national award program for performing artists. This year, he’s getting one of those awards — on his final day at the NAC, no less.
Herrndorf is among this year’s group of laureates named to the Governor General’s Performing Arts Awards. A special award has been created to recognize his long career as an arts advocate and lead -
The NRC re-imagines itself, with the help of a bigger budget
The no-longer-new president of the National Research Council has just been told by the federal budget to “re-imagine” his agency, but it turns out he’s been doing this for a year and a half.
Iain Stewart was hired in 2016 — NRC’s centennial — and told to make changes, after the sudden departure of his predecessor, John McDougall.
“Ministers asked me to come back in the spring (of 2017) with ideas on how to re-imagine the NRC,” he said Thursday in a -

SIU clears Ottawa police after 'assaultive' man broke ankle following arrest
Barefoot thrashing within an Ottawa police cruiser, rather than a violent arrest, was the more likely cause of a 20-year-old man’s broken ankle, the province’s police watchdog says.
The Special Investigations Unit concluded in a decision released Thursday that there were no grounds to charge an Ottawa police officer involved in the 2017 arrest.
The SIU said civilian witnesses confirmed the accounts of two police officers and not the complainant’s version, -
Future of Uber and Lyft in Ottawa rests with judge
The future of the City of Ottawa’s bylaw regulating ride companies like Uber and Lyft rests in the hands of a Superior Court judge.
Justice Maria Linhares de Sousa reserved her decision Thursday on an application by the taxi union to quash the vehicle-for-hire bylaw and reinstate the former taxi-only licensing regime. The judge didn’t say when she would release her decision.
The taxi union’s lawyer, Monica Song, capped off four days of argument by replying to the case pres -

Carleton University and striking workers accuse each other of 'untrue' statements
Carleton University and the union representing nearly 850 striking support staff are accusing each other of making “untrue” statements, even as both sides expressed a desire to return to the bargaining table.
The university issued a response Thursday to public statements made by CUPE 2424 president Jerrett Clark, who announced Wednesday the union’s desire to return to negotiations, saying the union had asked for more dates to continue talks.
“Regrettably, that statement i -
Antiques: Chinese Chippendale chair sits well with time
Q: Over fifty years ago I bought what I think is a “jeux de dames” board, at a farm near Berthierville, Quebec. The game was once quite popular in rural Quebec.
It is made of two pieces of rough wood held together by a series of metal staples with thin pieces of wood on three of its sides and was hand-painted.
It measures 60.5 cm long, 34 cm wide and 2 cm thick (24 x 13.4 x 0.78 inches). It has a “folk art” look to it. Any information you might be able to provide wo -

The forecast is predicting a significant amount of snow
But wait, there’s more! Snow that is.
Ottawa was dusted with 3.2 cm of white stuff Wednesday and we may get another 13 cm before the weekend.
For Thursday, Environment Canada predicts periods of snow adding up to 2 to 4 cm and a high of 0 c.
A dog called “Guilbert” catches a ball as he runs through snow.
Overnight, expect 5 cm more with a low of -3 C.

Aurora aircraft good to fly until 2030 but DND setting the stage for its replacement
Pat Finn, the Department of National Defence’s assistant deputy minister for materiel, says the Aurora maritime surveillance aircraft will be around for a while. “We still have some years ahead as we add more capability to the aircraft,” he recently told parliamentarians. “We’re just finishing the life extension of the aircraft to 2030, which is a pretty significant capability investment.”
A short time later, Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan signed a letter sign -

Reevely: Ontario Tories' voting problems 'a scandal,' Doug Ford charges
The Ontario Progressive Conservatives are sticking with their plan to end voting for their new leader at mid-day Friday, despite requests from three of the four candidates to extend the deadline.
“I call it a scandal,” candidate Doug Ford said in an email blast to supporters Thursday morning.
Ford, Tanya Granic Allen and Caroline Mulroney all called for a week’s delay in closing the party’s online polls because of technical problems Tory members have had casting ballots. -

As we await the verdict in the trial of two University of Ottawa hockey players charged with sexual assault, I am thinking, not of the accused, whose careers may be affected by a guilty verdict, but of the victim, whose life is irrevocably altered no matter what happens.
Convicted or not, and they usually aren’t, men charged with sexual assault seem to come out OK. Steeped in denial, buoyed by rape myths, surrounded by supporters invested in their innocence, they are rarely diminished by t -

McKenna: How to run – like a girl – for political office
Here are the facts: In Ottawa, only four of 22 city councillors are women. That’s a dismal 18 per cent of council. In cities across Canada, on average women make up only 26 per cent of the councillors. Women make up more than half of our population. We need politics to be representative of the population it serves.
In Ottawa, there is momentum to change this. Councillor Diane Deans is calling for a women’s bureau, and Mayor Jim Watson has shown support for gender parity on all commit -
The forecast is predicating a significant amount of snow
But wait, there’s more! Snow that is.
Ottawa was dusted with 3.2 cm of white stuff Wednesday and we may get another 13 cm before the weekend.
For Thursday, Environment Canada predicts periods of snow adding up to 2 to 4 cm and a high of 0 c.
A dog called “Guilbert” catches a ball as he runs through snow.
Overnight, expect 5 cm more with a low of -3 C.
Friday’s forecast is for periods of snow totaling 2 to 4 cm, a high of 1 C and a low of -4 C with a 40 per cent chance of -
MILCK on writing her breakthrough hit: "I was finally free"
MILCK is the stage name for Connie Lim, the L.A.-based singer-songwriter who co-wrote the song, Quiet, a powerful ballad that’s become the unofficial anthem of the women’s movement. Lynn Saxberg spoke to the artist/activist about writing it, and how it changed her life. (The interview was edited for length.)
Q: You have a new EP, This is Not The End, but most people recognize you from the song, Quiet. I understand you had been trying to express that sentiment for a while.
A: I -
Bystanders may have saved hockey player, 44, with quick shock: Paramedics

Paramedics responded to a call for sudden cardiac arrest at the facility on Maplegrove Road in Kanata at 7:44 p.m.
By the time they arrived, witnesses had started CPR and delivered a shock with an Automated External Defibrillators (AED).

Angus Reid poll boosts prospects for Elliott, Mulroney in PC leadership race: Ford seen as polarizing figure
There isn’t much good news for Ontario Progressive Conservative leadership candidate Doug Ford in the online poll conducted by Angus Reid Institute, which bills itself as a national, non-partisan polling organization.
Roughly half of the 807 Ontario adults surveyed March 6 and 7 have an unfavourable opinion of Ford, a businessman and former Toronto city councillor, while just 27 per cent said they viewed him favourably. In sharp contrast, the poll suggested more Ontario voters are favourab -
