Two months before sex assault trial, well-known Ottawa teacher and basketball coach dies
A former Ottawa teacher and basketball coach who was facing a raft of historic sexual assault charges has died at home only two months before he was to stand trial.
Donald Greenham, 75, died of a heart attack Sunday at his home in Addison, near Brockville, said criminal defence lawyer Sean May.
“There’s no questions that the stress of this kind of case is difficult on anyone physically,” May said Tuesday. “It’s just a sad, sad thing.”
May said his client had e -
Reevely: Ontario makes millions auctioning carbon permits but won't say who bought them
The provincial government refuses to say whether Ontario companies were big buyers in the first international auction for carbon permits, sending cash to Quebec or California for the right to emit greenhouse gases.
Joining up with those two jurisdictions in the “Western Climate Initiative” is the driveshaft of the Liberal government’s climate-change plan. Four times a year, they put millions of tonnes’ worth of “allowances” up for bids, letting certain heavy e -

Cannabis Culture pot shop on Bank Street loses court bid to have eviction overturned
Cannabis Culture, a former pot shop on Bank Street, has lost a court bid to have its eviction overturned.
Justice Michelle O’Bonsawin ruled the landlord was justified in terminating the lease because the dispensary was operating in contravention of both its rental lease and federal law.
The landlord posted an eviction notice on the door of the illegal dispensary in December and called a bailiff to change the locks. Cannabis Culture appealed to the Superior Court of Justice to reinstate the -

Claridge Homes submits plans for next stage of development on LeBreton Flats
A five-tower, 1,950-unit development would be the next phase under Claridge Homes’ blueprint for the east end of LeBreton Flats, according to plans filed at city hall.
The so-called East Flats project would add 164,500 square metres of floor space along Lett and Booth streets, northeast of the Pimisi LRT station under construction on Booth Street. The proposal includes affordable housing, a food store and other commercial space.
Claridge’s existing phases of residential development o -

City maintains confidence that LRT builder will cough up delay costs
Mayor Jim Watson and city management maintained their confidence Tuesday that municipal taxpayers will be insulated from extra costs racked up during the LRT delay.
Watson and councillors learned the city will miss out on roughly $1.83 million from a planned ridership increase when the Confederation Line was supposed to open around the middle of the year. The handover from Rideau Transit Group (RTG) to OC Transpo was supposed to happen May 24, but the date has been pushed to Nov. 2.

Speeder learns difference between miles per hour and kilometres per hour
A high-miler who blew by a patrolling OPP cruiser at 159 km/h insisted it was impossible he was speeding.
He was only going 98, the “argumentative” driver maintained when he was pulled over on Highway 401 westbound near Brockville, after he passed the cruiser at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.
The officer realized the motorist’s speedometer was reading in miles.
“Turns out 98 mph = 159 kmh,” Leeds County OPP noted in a release Tuesday.
There was no word on whether the 40-ye -

Carleton strike, Day 2: University admin urges union to return to table
As striking Carleton University support staff picketed for the second day, university administration urged the union to return to the bargaining table.
CUPE 2424, the union representing about 850 campus administrative, library and support staff, failed to reach an agreement after last-minute contract negotiations broke down in the early hours of Monday morning, sending hundreds of members to the picket lines, where they remained Tuesday.
Union president Jerrett Clark said a dispute over language -
House Works: Gas water heaters an ideal solution for Canadian space heating
Hot water heating is getting more popular in this country and for good reason. I’ve never met anyone who didn’t like the quiet, even, fan-free heat delivered by hydronic infloor heating or hot water radiators.
What fewer people realize is how well a gas-fired tank-style hot water heater works as a source of heat for hot water space heating.
You can either install one as part of a heating system upgrade, or tap into an existing water heater if it’s up to the job. I’m insta -

Cohen: Netanyahu and Trump, twins of political disaster
An empty limousine pulled up to the White House on Monday and Benjamin Netanyahu got out – a hollow man, defensive and diminished amid his ebbing authority.
He was there, of course, to meet Donald Trump, his co-religionist in the high church of defiance. To their reunion, Netanyahu brought the flattery of a courtier and the loyalty of a lapdog.
They had come together for the fifth time since Trump became president. As two fugitives from the future, only steps ahead of the law, they underst -

A very foolish flight
Re: Gen. Vance’s staff planned taxpayer-funded airborne party, Feb. 24.

Suspects sought in armed pot shop heist that left victim needing surgery
Police are trying to nab robbers who allegedly fired a handgun, then used it to beat an employee into surgery during a heist at a Vanier marijuana dispensary last month.
Three disguised suspects walked into 613 Medicinals on Montreal Road at Lajoie Street around 12:50 p.m. on Feb. 17.
One jumped a counter to access the back of the store, then opened the door for another suspect, police said. They allegedly demanded cash and “related products” and a struggle broke out betwee -

Winter’s warming up for a return.
Temperatures are staying relatively mild but there’s a risk of flurries – and a night of full-on snow – on the way.

Today's letters: Making Question Period work, arguing over recreational trails
Question period: The Speaker must take a stand
Re: A new futility on the Hill; PM making a mockery of question period, March 2.
Friday’s Citizen informed us that when the Conservatives asked our Prime Minister a question related to his recent India trip he took the opportunity to tout the recent budget and completely avoided answering the question. Predictably, the Conservatives were howling mad and demanded that the Speaker enforce an imaginary relevancy rule to force the prime -

Attempt to improve Cyclone helicopter caused problems related to sonar equipment
Back in December the Canadian Press news agency had a story revealing a new series of problems affecting the RCAF’s new maritime helicopter, the CH-148 Cyclone, and its sonar system. The article outlined how the sonar system used by some CH-148 Cyclones must be removed before the helicopters are allowed to land on ships.
The RCAF has provided additional information to Defence Watch about what caused the problems and what is being done about those issues:

Phoenix pay adds another error: pensions and taxes
The errors are compounding in the Phoenix pay system that rolled out two years ago for nearly 300,000 federal government employees.
Public Services and Procurement Canada on Monday sent workers an email warning the that government may have delivered T4 documents containing incorrect information.
This is no small admission because the T4 tax document is a summary of each employee’s salary, benefits and deductions for the tax year. The email from PSPC noted that employees who had received a -
Phoenix leads to pay woes and sleepless nights for 'detail-oriented' fisheries officer
She didn’t lose her house and she never missed a paycheque, but for Johanna Jenkins, Phoenix has been the never-ending itch that can’t be scratched.
Meticulous, detail-oriented and, by her own admission, “a bit high strung,” the west coast fisheries officer has endured fouled-up pay and inaccurate T4 slips for nearly two years without relief.
“I’m detail-oriented, but that’s part of my job,” Jenkins said from Nanaimo, B.C. “You have to be. We -
Reevely: Ottawa Hospital looks for ways to salvage heritage at Sir John Carling site
Unless The Ottawa Hospital can build a new Civic campus around the old cafeteria at the Sir John Carling Building, the historic structure the government saved when it dynamited the rest of the old office tower is doomed, under the terms of the hospital’s new lease.
The federal government is letting the hospital use the property that used to hold Agriculture Canada’s headquarters, just northwest of Dow’s Lake, to build a new hospital and replace the century-old Civic building a -
