Refugee musicians will help raise funds for Canadian Blood Services, Inuit children
Before he fled Syria, Mohammed Naser wanted to become a musician. He played a range of instruments — piano, drums, violin, guitar and oud (a Middle Eastern lute) — and sang powerfully and even piercingly.

That result gave Bjøergen a total of 14 career medals, including seven gold, just one behind another record set by Bjoerndalen. -

'Mother Nature has spoken': Melting Mosaïvernales snow sculptures closed
Noting that “Mother Nature has spoken,” organizers of Mosaïvernales say they’ve had to shut down early because the snow sculptures can’t be kept up in the continued warm, wet weather.
Only 20,000 people took in the exhibit at Jacques Cartier Park over 20 days.
Organizers had hoped to attract 200,000 over 38 days running through March 4.
“Despite the goodwill and the perseverance of the operations team and the artists, the weather will simply not allow the maint -

Weird Wednesday weather as temps swing from 11 C to -7 C
Because we couldn’t go a day without some kind of watch or warning, the capital awoke Wednesday to a fog advisory.
According to Environment Canada, dense fog reduced visibility to as little as 200 metres in some areas so slow down and watch for tail lights on the road until later morning when an advancing cold front should clear it up.
But that’s not the end of the wacky weather with the temperature first rising to 11 C amid periods of rain then dropping to 2 C by afternoon and -

Dawson: Here's why Mayor Jim Watson is wrong about pot lounges
Mayor Jim Watson won’t support the idea of legal lounges where people can smoke pot.
That’s not even remotely surprising: Watson’s a cautious, conservative mayor when it comes to social policy. He doesn’t want to make it easier for anyone to smoke anything in lounges.
If his view wins the day, there won’t really be anywhere in Ottawa to smoke pot, because politicians at Queen’s Park have banned smoking marijuana in public places.
The only place whe -

Grandson alleges Ottawa long-term care home negligent in woman's death
When Doris Lawton’s Alzheimer’s disease began to worsen at age 93, her grandson moved her into a long-term care home to keep her safe.
“I put her there because I thought she was going to be protected,” said Bradley Sproule. “That is the one thing that didn’t happen.”
What did happen soon after Lawton moved to Carlingview Manor in 2016 were falls — including one the day after she returned from the hospital following surgery for a hip fracture, accor -
Editorial: Expect more lawsuits over long-term care
Today, we report another tragic story of protection gone wrong for a senior in an Ottawa long-term care home. And it appears the death of 91-year-old Doris Lawton is headed to court, after her grandson filed a negligence suit against Carlingview Manor, where she was a resident.
Ontario’s long-term care facilities can expect more such legal action until the province finally overhauls its flawed, rationed approach to long-term care.
Lawton died Oct. 19 from a blood clot in her lung, having e -
