Reevely: As PC leader, Patrick Brown took free trips from suppliers, MPP Randy Hillier alleges
Ottawa Valley MPP Randy Hillier intensified his campaign against former Progressive Conservative leader Patrick Brown on Tuesday, reporting him to the provincial integrity commissioner for alleged ethics violations — just after most of the Tory party’s executive threatened to revolt if Brown isn’t allowed to run to reclaim his place at the top of the party.
The integrity complaint, which Hillier released publicly at the end of the day, alleges that Brown accepted trips abroad f -
Egan: Conservatives sniping at MP Gallant before weekend nomination challenge
For 18 years, Cheryl Gallant has not been afraid to mock her enemies. This weekend, we’ll see how she makes out with her friends.
For the first time since 2000, the MP for Renfrew-Nipissing-Pembroke is facing a challenge for the Conservative nomination in the sprawling riding that takes in much of the Upper Ottawa Valley.
She is being opposed by Michael Coates, 61, a lifelong Conservative who recently retired as a senior executive in the field of communications and government relations wit -

Ottawa psychiatrist suspended, ordered to take anger management
An Ottawa psychiatrist has been suspended for four months and ordered to take anger management after labelling one of his patients a “terrorist,” and accusing two colleagues of plotting against him and stealing his keys.
Dr. John Dimock later found the keys to his clinic on the floor of his car.
Dimock, 66, has been a practising psychiatrist for more than 35 years with offices in Ottawa and Farmville, Virginia. In a decision issued last month, the discipline committee of -

Tuesday Olympic roundup: Canada within reach of highest collective Winter Olympic finish ever
Canada could end up with its best-ever ranking on the Winter Olympic medal standings.
Through Tuesday’s action at Pyeongchang, Canadian athletes’ 19 medals were third most behind only Norway (29) and Germany (23).
If that position remains unchanged through the end of the 2018 Winter Games on Sunday, it would match Canada’s best finish ever. This country was also third at Lake Placid in 1932, but with just seven total medals, at Turin (24) in 2006 and at Vancouver (26) in 2010. -

Firefighters mop up diesel spill after south-end crash
No one was hurt but fire crews had to mop up a mess after a pick-up and a transport truck collided south of Manotick Tuesday afternoon.
Firefighters called to Bankfield Road and Prince of Wales Drive reported that they didn’t have to free anyone trapped in the wreckage but asked motorists to avoid the area as they cleaned up fluid and debris.
The hazardous materials team worked to contain the diesel spill, using a small boom and spreading absorbent material.

SOS Vanier member complains to ombudsman over mayor’s ‘lack of impartiality’
A member of SOS Vanier has asked the Ontario ombudsman to investigate the inner workings of council’s decision to approve the Salvation Army’s shelter relocation to the community.
Philippe Denault’s complaint focuses on Mayor Jim Watson’s support of the Salvation Army’s application before council voted last November.
Denault said the mayor’s “lack of impartiality” could be a breach of council’s code of conduct regarding transparent decision-m -
Police warn public about online job offer scams
The Ottawa Police Service has issued a warning for residents to be aware of the resurgence of a scam involving online offers of employment.
Police said the fraud begins with the offer of employment from a questionable source on the Internet. Sometimes the employment offer is received unsolicited through text messages to a cellphone or personal email addresses. In other cases, people posting their résumés online are being offered random jobs by unfamiliar organizations or businesses -
'How can I believe in anything anymore, if this is how it ends for them?': The love story of Julie and Mike
This is a story with a bad ending.
It seems only fair to warn you. When you get to the part where there should be the beautiful reward and the Golden Years, you’re not going to find it.
People familiar with this story are rather shattered by that.
Those most shattered are going through what you might call a crisis of faith, what one person described as: “Total devastation. How can I believe in anything anymore, if this is how it ends for them?”
This is the story of Julie and Mi -

Cohen: Black activist Frederick Douglass is everyone's hero – 200 years later
WASHINGTON, D.C. – This month marks the bicentennial of the birth of Frederick Douglass, journalist, orator, author and reformer. Born a slave, he won his freedom at 20 and became the most influential black American of his time.
In a country conscious of its past, in a city proud of its black heritage, turning 200 is an occasion. Among the celebrations of Douglass this winter are a photographic exhibition at the Library of Congress and an evening of music and drama at the Lincoln Theatre o -

Adam: Patrick Brown was accused in public. He has a right to defend himself in public
How could you, Patrick? How could you do this to your own party?
That basically sums up the reaction of Ontario Progressive Conservative party leaders after the dramatic announcement last Friday that the disgraced former party leader had decided to jump into the race for the very job he was ran out of only weeks ago. (As of this writing it was not yet known if his candidacy would be accepted).
Many believe that Brown’s entry in the race amidst sexual abuse allegations could tear the party -

Liberal government plan saves money at expense of veterans: opinion
By Sean Bruyea
Defence Watch Guest Writer
The new Liberal plan for veterans is all about saving money, yet again, at the expense of veterans.
The more Canadians and veterans learn of the 2019 Liberal programs, the more the confusion and anger grow. How do we survive the dizzying daze induced by trying to understand veterans’ benefits?
First, let’s cut through the thick and misleading rhetoric.
The issue: Injured veterans receiving pre-April 2006 Pension Act benefits -

One rollover nets two impaired drivers: OPP
A man who rolled his vehicle in Quinte West over the weekend was charged with drunk driving, then so was the woman who came to his rescue.
OPP report that they responded to the single-vehicle crash on Baptist Church Road at about 6:46 p.m. Saturday and an investigation revealed that the motorist was unhurt but his ability to drive was impaired by alcohol.
But then, “a female party known to the accused male attended the scene to check on his wellbeing,” police reported.

Political corruption is killing American kids
Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is the perfect example of why American school kids will continue to be murdered. Rubio has received more than $3 million from the National Rifle Association (NRA) to run his successful campaigns. The NRA finances many – maybe most – U.S. politicians’ campaigns in return for not considering or even mention gun control.
The investigative team that dug up Rubio’s payoff should go to work and list ho -
