When the City of Ottawa put together its “concept plan” for Amberway Park in Stittsville, there was a graphic of a new play structure, a legend and scale, lots of arrows and those perfect circular trees only architects can grow.
But it lacked an essential element: enough child’s play.
Anthony Fiorenza could see that straight away, from experience. He’s 12, and pretty much grew up in the park off Denham Way, playing his heart out on the wobbly bridge, the slide, the swings

Family Day showers bring … 'ponding,' rainfall warning
Unseasonably warm temperatures coupled with forecasts for rain have prompted Environment Canada to issue a rainfall warning for the Ottawa area.
A mix of sun and cloud is likely to give way to rain by about 3 p.m. Monday, with between 10 and 20 mm expected to fall by Tuesday morning, and 25 to 40 mm by Wednesday morning.
“Rainfall, combined with melting snow, is expected,” said the weather agency. “As a result, localized flooding is likely in low-lying areas.”
With a high -
Open in 2067: Ottawa time capsule stuffed with hodgepodge of council tokens
In 2067, the mayor of Ottawa will crack open a time capsule that has been lodged in a wall at city hall and probably send staff on a search for an old-fashioned gizmo that can read files on a USB stick.
The Council of Heritage Organizations in Ottawa (CHOO) and Mayor Jim Watson will unveil a plaque and reveal the contents of the time capsule during a Heritage Day event on Tuesday at city hall. Council members will then help inter the time capsule into a wall.
The items are already sealed in the -

Gatineau man charged in 2002 cold case death of his Calgary girlfriend
A Gatineau man was scheduled to arrive in Alberta Monday to face a second-degree murder charge in a 16-year-old cold case — the death of his girlfriend.
Adrienne McColl, 21, was killed on Valentine’s Day in 2002, and her body was found in a rancher’s field outside Calgary.
On Saturday, Gatineau police arrested Stéphane Parent, 49, as he was going to work.
The arrest came a few days after RCMP in Alberta announced that improvements in forensic technology have allowed them -
Rideau Canal Skateway to close at 10 p.m. Monday
The Rideau Canal Skateway is temporarily shutting down Monday night after mild weather has eroded the quality of the ice, the National Capital Commission announced.
The 7.8-kilometre skateway will close at 10 p.m.
“The mild weather and the precipitations expected in the coming days will erode the quality of the ice surface and create hazardous conditions for skaters and the public,” the NCC said. “This closure, while we wait for colder weather, will help preserve the ice with t -

Kaplan: Government-planned 'superclusters' are mostly hot air
The announcement last week of the federal government’s five newly anointed “superclusters” was strange, even by Ottawa’s myopic standards. The whole thing felt like the launch of a cutting-edge tech product, with Innovation Minister Navdeep Bains playing the role of the visionary CEO. Mr. Bains paid homage to the tech titans of our age, suggesting that a supercluster is nothing less than a “made-in-Canada Silicon Valley.”

Canada finally has a list of all our Arctic fish, 58 years in the making
It was 1960 and Canada’s fisheries managers had a problem: No one fully knew what kinds of fish were in our oceans, or where they lived.
Not understanding what fish we have can be a national problem, as the crash of the Atlantic cod fishery later proved.
So the Fisheries Research Board of Canada began gathering information, and soon there were descriptions and maps for the Atlantic fish, Pacific fish and freshwater fish — but still nothing for the Arctic Ocean. The problem stayed tha -

So, what's a twizzle, anyway? And why is it so hard to do?
The twizzle is a movement most often seen in ice dancing, and it’s a spin with a difference.
Most spins happen while the skater remains in one place, and they tend to be fast. The twizzle, however, is a slower rotation that takes place as the skater is moving across the ice. The skater lifts one foot off the ice during the twizzle.
Sometimes in ice dancing, the pair twizzle at the same time, close together, and they are supposed to rotate at the same speed. But that isn’t easy, and i -

Perry: Saving downtown means pivoting to biking and walking
The following is a rebuttal to Tyler Dawson’s recent column, “It’s not a Sparks Street problem, it’s a downtown problem”:
Tyler Dawson says that improving Sparks Street requires “a wholesale change to how Ottawa thinks of downtown” and that “for the city, the best bet is to make all of downtown, not just Sparks, a place people can get to and around with some degree of comfort.”
Yes, absolutely. But, strangely, he limits the discussion t -
Callaghan: Health care isn't about tech – it's about humans
Amazon and two partners recently announced a major, if mysterious, move into the American health-care market. In all likelihood, this endeavour will prove quite profitable, touched as it is by the profit-turning pixie dust of Silicon Valley, and fuelled by mountains of capital, talent and data.
And yet, if the goal is truly to improve public health, the tech giants have already missed the point.
For this non-profit venture, Amazon has joined forces with the bank JP Morgan, and with Warren B -

Canada's deal on AWACS – less money and no RCAF personnel
As Defence Watch reported last week, the Liberal government has reversed a 2011 decision that saw Canada withdraw from NATO’s AWACS program.
The Conservative government decided at that time to end participation in the airborne early warning plane program to save money.
Canada’s NATO allies were surprised and angered about the pullout. The Royal Canadian Air Force warned at the time that the decision could put overseas operations at risk. But that didn’t appear to happen.

Brown says he grew PC party, so he should get to lead it again
Patrick Brown stepped down from his position late last month amid sexual misconduct allegations, which he has repeatedly and categorically denied. On Friday, Brown officially entered the race for his old job.
But beyond the allegations that forced Brown from the party helm, the number of card-carrying Tories the politician offered up is also in contention.
Interim leader Vic Fedeli said in an email to caucus earlier this month that the party has roughly 67,000 fewer members than the 200,000 Brow -
City crews break up Rideau River ice with explosives
The sound of explosives shook the air just above the Rideau River falls by the Ottawa River on Sunday.
The annual ice blasting helps to prevent an ice dam from restricting the flow of water which increases as milder weather creates extra run-off into the Rideau River.
It’s ice blasting time on the Rideau River near the Rideau Falls, which is where city workers were busy on Sunday. Ashley Fraser/Postmedia
Ashley Fraser was on the scene to record the operation, which clears the way for water -
Anti-immigration groups at Parliament Hill protest demand apology from Trudeau
Hundreds of Asian-Canadian protesters, supported by several white, far-right, anti-immigrant groups stormed Parliament Hill on Sunday afternoon to demand an apology from the prime minister.
According to plans for the protest on voteforright.com, members of the Asian-Canadian community feel victimized by a Toronto girl’s false claim in January that an Asian man cut off her hijab and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s apparent rush to view the fictitious incident as a hate crime.
