Family of missing Indigenous woman expresses 'no confidence' in MMIW inquiry
Mary Papatsie’s family has little confidence in the police investigation into the woman’s disappearance or in the national inquiry into the many missing and murdered Indigenous women like her.
“The family and loved ones of Mary Papatsie have little to no confidence in the MMIW inquiry, and the police handling the cases,” the family said in a statement.
Papatsie’s family issued the statement in response to recent revelations the national inquiry into missing and murd -
Suits us just fine: Olympic skeleton controversy is just the latest example of sports technology
“Citius, Altius, Fortius.” Translated: “Faster, Higher, Stronger.”
It was the Olympic motto proposed by Pierre de Coubertin when the International Olympic Committee (IOC) was created in the late 19th century.
“If you’re not cheating, you’re not trying.” Another motto attributed to the late professional wrestler Eddie Guerrero a century later.
These expressions came to mind given the controversy over skeleton — a sport in which well-train -
Egan: Racial bias in street checks was an issue never fixed — and now we have new problems
In 2017, police forces across Ontario began using new rules for street checks — the practice of stopping, identifying and keeping records on individuals engaged in suspicious activity.
Solid evidence emerged that the old system was racially-biased and feeding secret caches of information about me, you, the dog and Uncle Mo.
So the Ministry of Community Safety, supported by human rights rulings, brought down the hammer.
Outside of traffic stops or investigating a specific crime, officers ar -
Homicide victim Egal Daud buried Friday after mosque service
An Ottawa homicide victim and Algonquin College student was remembered during Friday prayers as more than 1,000 worshippers gathered at the Assalam Mosque.
Egal Daud, 30, was found dead in his car Sunday morning in a parking lot on Northview Road in Nepean after being reported missing by his family five days earlier.
Police said Daud, the city’s fifth homicide victim of the year, had been shot. No arrest has yet been made in the case.
A funeral service was held for Daud at the Assala -
Reevely: Patrick Brown is running to be leader of a party he's tearing apart
Former Progressive Conservative leader Patrick Brown is running to succeed himself, registering on the same day as his temporary successor kicked him out of the party caucus at Queen’s Park.
“Shortly after becoming interim leader, I asked Patrick Brown to step aside from the PC caucus,” interim leader Vic Fedeli said in a brisk statement Friday morning. “The legislature is set to resume sitting on Tuesday, Feb. 20, following Family Day. Earlier today, Mr. Brown was notifi -

Program will make costly melanoma drug therapy available in Ontario
In the same week that Russell’s Carolyn Pol died from advanced melanoma, her family learned a promising combination of immunotherapy drugs will now be covered for other Ontario patients.
Pol and her family were forced to raise tens of thousands of dollars for the drugs last summer. At the time, the drug combination was not covered by the Ontario government — even though the drugs, ipilimumab (Yervoy) and nivolumab (Opdivo), were publicly funded when used on their own.

Whether by Loppet race or casual loop, cross-country skiing is crazy good for you
At the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, Mary Ormsby of the Toronto Star took one look at the fit, spandex-laden forms of the cross-country skiers and declared: “I have found my new sport.”
Ormsby wasn’t a typical out-of-shape scribe. She had been an all-American volleyball player at Ohio State, so knew athletics from both sides.
There are dozens of reasons to agree with Ormsby’s assertion 30 years ago at the beautiful Canmore nordic centre course, and not just because the -

Reevely: The harder Patrick Brown fights, the more pain for his party
Temporary Progressive Conservative leader Vic Fedeli kicked Patrick Brown out of the provincial Tory caucus Friday morning. He’d probably rather gag him.
“Shortly after becoming interim leader, I asked Patrick Brown to step aside from the PC caucus,” Fedeli said in a brisk statement. “The legislature is set to resume sitting on Tuesday, Feb. 20, following Family Day. Earlier today, Mr. Brown was notified that he has been removed from the PC caucus effective immediately.&r -
Obituary: Eight Seconds' Frank Levin was major influence on Ottawa music scene
Eight Seconds, one of Ottawa’s best-known bands of the 1980s, lost its keyboard mastermind when Frank Levin died in China late last year. He was 55.Levin had been living in Shanghai for about 10 years pursuing business opportunities, said his friend and former bandmate Andres del Castillo, who travelled to China to bring Levin’s ashes home to Ottawa. He wrote about the journey in a poignant essay posted to social media.
In a recent interview, del Castillo recalls his friend as a fun- -

Rideau Canal Skateway set to open again Saturday
After a brief hiatus, the Rideau Canal Skateway is opening back up Saturday morning, the National Capital Commission announced.
The 7.8-kilometre skateway shut down Wednesday night as balmy weather threatened to erode the quality of the ice surface.
The skateway is set to open at 8 a.m., with temperatures for the day reaching up to -3 C with a mix of sun and cloud, then dipping to a low of -6 C with a chance of flurries at night.
The 48th skateway season has so far brought 32 skating days. -

Canopy Growth Corp. is expanding its empire to operate cannabis stores in Manitoba.
The Manitoba government announced Friday that the Smiths Falls-based company, operating in a consortium with Winnipeg cannabis grower Delta 9, was one of four winning proposals given “conditional acceptance” to operate stores in the province.
The federal government plans to legalize recreational marijuana, but the provinces choose how and where it will be sold.

Controversy in curling: What the rules say about 'burned' rocks
As if losing the first three games of the Olympic women’s curling competition wasn’t hard enough on the Ottawa-based foursome skipped by Rachel Homan — and it certainly is well beyond frustrating for the pre-tournament favourites and reigning world champions — Friday’s “burned” rock controversy sparked more controversy.
Here’s a primer on what happened, including what the rules of curling say about the situation.

70 years ago, Murray Dowey backstopped another crew of Canadian amateurs to Winter Olympic hockey glory
The last man added to the roster, at the last possible moment, and the last line of defence for an upstart crew that defended Canada’s Olympic hockey honour in 1948 is now the last surviving member of the RCAF Flyers.
Murray Dowey says he keeps his gold-medal past low-profile these days in the his Toronto seniors residence.
“A couple of people have asked me, but I haven’t made it known that I played in the Olympics,” said Dowey, who’s now 92. “That’s jus -

Home base: Ottawa’s original green architect builds her own condo
When Linda Chapman and her husband, Barry Cooper, decided it was time to downsize, the architect drew up plans to design and build their own home and invited longtime friends to join them.
With a vision of living and working in a condo that met her rigorous energy-efficient and green standards and desire for a built-in community within walking distance of amenities, Chapman began the process of building a four-unit condo on a double lot she purchased in 2009 in New Edinburgh. After selling a uni -

Ship Shape: Naval architect designs own home using ship-design modelling
A rare residential gem, tucked away on a small side street in Centretown West, is a testament to one Ottawa man’s determination to build a house that both masterfully blends artistic imagination with mathematical precision, and gives new meaning to a custom home.
Nathaniel Davis’s dream was to create a residence that he would design down to the minutest of details, driven by dual passions that drew him to a career as a naval architect.

Khan: North-America's #MeToo trend ignores women's struggles globally
Let’s be honest. The current discussion on sexual harassment has been mostly limited to North America, despite the fact that attempts at a revolution have been taking place outside the continent for decades. And at an excruciating cost.
This focus on the North American story exposes the stark disconnect between the perception of the liberated and empowered woman of the West, and her counterparts in poorer, non-Western countries.
Because the world of misogyny, patriarchy and sexual s -

Names of aircraft manufacturers on “suppliers list” for Canada’s new fighter jet still a mystery
Feb. 9 was the deadline for companies to apply to the Canadian government to be on the supplier’s list for the new program to provide a fleet of fighter jets.
Being on that list is a requirement to be able to enter the competition to provide Canada with 88 new fighter aircraft.
Public Services and Procurement Canada was looking at having the list formalized by Feb. 12, at which time they would make it public. The reason for the fast turnaround is because it is relatively easy to be include -
