Canada's Olympic athletes' garb gets NRC wind tunnel testing
Some of the most important high-speed training for our Olympic athletes takes them inside a tunnel, where they stand very still.
There’s a wind tunnel at the National Research Council — not the big one near the airport but a smaller tunnel on Montreal Road — where air blows fast over and around their suits in a never-ending contest against drag.
Bodies moving fast through air create drag. Drag kills speed. But the right suit can minimize drag.

Mayor to ask province for more money to battle opioid crisis
Mayor Jim Watson will appeal to the Ontario government for more funding the city “desperately” needs to deal with the opioid crisis.
During a council meeting Wednesday, Watson said he will formally ask Eric Hoskins, the minister of Health and Long-Term Care, for additional investments into mental health and addiction treatment services for the city.
Watson said he’ll also meet with Premier Kathleen Wynne at the end of the month to discuss funding options for addiction trea -

OC Transpo is finally ready to welcome your pets on the transit system.
A report published Wednesday ahead of a the transit commission meeting next week recommends allowing small pets on buses and trains, as long as the animals are in a carrier or crate that can sit on the customer’s lap.
“This recommendation is consistent with most other major public transit agencies in North America and is supported by Ottawa Public Health staff,” the report says.

Council softens order to limit shelter beds in Salvation Army complex
Council just wants the Salvation Army’s word that the organization will have a maximum of 140 beds in a new emergency shelter, rather than writing the measure into the land-use bylaw for the Vanier property.
The softer motion, unanimously endorsed by council, replaced a proposal by Rideau-Vanier Coun. Mathieu Fleury to write into a bylaw the maximum number of shelter beds in the Salvation Army’s complex planned for 333 Montreal Rd.

Rideau Canal Skateway temporarily closing Wednesday at 10 p.m.
The entire 7.8-kilometre Rideau Canal Skateway is temporarily closing Wednesday at 10 p.m. to preserve the ice’s condition, said the National Capital Commission.
The NCC said the balmy weather is eroding the quality of the ice surface, creating hazardous conditions for skaters and the public. The week’s forecast suggests the closures may last through the weekend.
Crews are hoping to open the skateway as quickly as possible, weather permitting.
The NCC urges the public to -

Happy Birthday to Ottawa curler Emma Miskew!
Wednesday was Emma Miskew’s birthday.
Based on photos posted online, the now 29-year-old curler from Ottawa spent at least parts of the day celebrating with family and friends.
However, it’s a better than safe bet that Miskew spent another chunk of birthday hours on the ice, joining teammates Rachel Homan, Joanne Courtney and Lisa Weagle in preparing for the start of their Olympic women’s curling competition.

Glowing salamanders shed light on evolution
Hillary Maddin wanted to look inside the heads of animals as they grow to adulthood, so she found a unique method: Grafting glow-in-the-dark pieces into them when they are young.
Maddin is a paleontologist at Carleton University who was testing whether salamanders are primitive creatures similar to animal life many millions of years ago. (Short answer: No. More on that in a minute.)
She bought them from a breeder in Kentucky.
The species is called a Mexican axolotl, and it’s normally -

Reevely: Toronto's economy roars while the rest of Ontario hollows out
Ontario’s economy is ticking over nicely, the province’s financial accountability office says, but most of the benefits are going to Toronto.
Last year, Greater Toronto added 69,700 jobs and central Ontario (which includes the tech powerhouse of Waterloo) added 57,200, according to the independent budget watchdog at Queen’s Park. But everywhere else — eastern, northern and southwestern Ontario, combined — added just 1,600 jobs.

Review: Les Misérables offers spectacles, songs to make jaws drop
Les MisérablesBroadway Across CanadaNational Arts Centre, until Feb. 18Reviewed Feb. 13
For a show about injustice, misery and unrequited love, the new production of Les Misérables that opened at the National Arts Centre on Tuesday may be a little too grand and glorious, infused with a sense of triumph that tends to overshadow its doomed characters. But that’s what makes it a truly jaw-dropping spectacle, and as one of the world’s most popular musicals, it has to be big -

The suspect arrived in a bus used to transport children with disabilities, later determined to be stolen, and forced his way through the front door. Once inside, police said he stole an undisclosed number of men’s winter coats.

Dawson: Here's why we should bulldoze where Lester B. Pearson lived
The home where Lester B. Pearson lived for a few years is not worthy of heritage protection or status. Knock the bloody thing down and let the Uganda High Commission rebuild; its plans for the new building look pretty nice, to be honest.
We’re not talking about some stunning period home in this case: Pearson’s onetime home is a squat, red-brick building on Ottawa’s Cobourg Street that looks like pretty much any other squat, red-brick building that could be in any other city in -

Online dating has become the new norm
This may already be common knowledge for those in the dating scene, but websites, apps and matchmaking services have become the way that couples are meeting.
According to dating experts, anyone still on the fence about whether to use the new high-tech dating services available today needs to get over their fear and jump in. Use of the internet enabled services are not limited to any single demographic. It seems young and old alike are using technology to find a match.

Technology has changed the way people fall in love – and created new hurdles for future generations

Police seek help locating clothing store break-in suspect
Ottawa police are seeking public assistance to locate a suspect in a commercial break-and-enter Saturday in the east end.
Police said the break-in occurred shortly before 6 a.m. at a clothing store in the 1500 block of Innes Road, near Blair Road.
The suspect arrived in a small bus-type van, later determined to be stolen, and forced his way through the front door. Once inside, he stole an undisclosed number of men’s jackets.
The stolen vehicle was later recovered nearby in the City Pa -

Egan: What love endures — the widower as pilgrim, coming on 300 Sundays
Every Sunday, Mike Patafie visits his wife, Jocelyn, in her quiet, polished surroundings.
He takes the black Buick, parks it under the overhang near the door, and patters across the long corridors, looking for the moveable steps that will guide the quiet ascension.
And there she is, in the corner by the big window, third one up, cradled by yellow sunflowers and the gaze of Mary and Jesus. He bows his head near the black granite, without needing to read the words: Patafie, Jocelyn, Dec. 26, 1936, -

Marijuana producer Canopy Growth earnings drop as it plays the long game
Shares in Smiths Falls-based marijuana producer Canopy Growth climbed five per cent in early trading Wednesday despite missing analysts’ projections on third-quarter revenues and earnings.
Part of the momentum was provided by a same-day announcement by the Société des alcools du Québec. SAQ said it had signed letters of intent to purchase significant quantities of marijuana from key producers.
Canopy Growth will supply 12,000 kilograms per year, the same amount as Onta -
'Love opens your eyes' – Valentine's Day is more than hearts and flowers for Jessie and Jeremy
Jeremy Abramson doesn’t just remember the day he and his fiancée, Jessie Huggett, became more than just friends.
He remembers the hour and the minute.
It was 11:46 a.m. on Valentine’s Day of 2011, the year after the couple — who didn’t remember meeting at a playgroup as babies, although their moms did — reconnected at an employment program.
They were in the boot room, Jessie recounted, when she nervously told him how she’d been feeling. She didn’t -
Love amid the bureaucracy at the city hall chapel
Marisa Anne Clark and David Berube have each written their own vows to supplement the ones that Ontario law makes them say.
They’re getting married at city hall at 2 o’clock on Feb. 1, which is their three-year anniversary as a couple, and comes after a seven-month engagement. Marisa is 33, David is 36 and they both work in retail. “We tried to plan a bigger wedding and we just couldn’t make it work,” Marisa says. “We had looked at some rustic settings, maybe -

Here's what kills the mood in Ottawa on Valentine's Day
Ottawans have no love for noise or animals – or noisy animals – on Valentine’s Day, judging by the bylaw request logs kept at city hall.
Take 2013 as an example.
That Feb. 14, the first bylaw complaint came in through the call centre by phone, two minutes and 23 second after midnight. There was something happening in Stittsville, something so irritating, that the caller had to alert city hall about the noise.
About six minutes later, the call centre’s phone line lit -
Important Valentine's Day news: A peach or a raspberry is a rose
The real rose family is one of the weirdest groups in nature — not a garden of long-stemmed flowers but more than 4,000 species of trees, fruits, thorny shrubs and oddball hybrids that surround us every day.
Some of them don’t even need a partner to reproduce, which should raise some questions about choosing them on Feb. 14.
And most of the big, messy rose family doesn’t even look like our usual vision of a rose. It is far more interesting.
Seen an almond lately? It’s in -

Marijuana producer Canopy Growth revenues up 123%, but miss analysts' estimates
Smiths Falls marijuana producer Canopy Growth Corp. said Wednesday its third-quarter revenues jumped 123 per cent year over year to $21.7 million.
That was below the consensus estimate of analysts who had been expecting revenues of $24.2 million according to a Thomson Reuters survey.
The company also recorded a sharper-than-expected drop in earnings as its third-quarter adjusted net loss expanded to $7.1 million compared to a loss of $1.4 million during the same period a year earlier -
Orléans couple charged with first-degree murder after 81-year-old's death ruled a homicide
When Maria Desousa, 81, was brought to the Montfort Hospital on Saturday afternoon, she was already dead.
It didn’t take long for the coroner to conclude that her fatal injuries were extremely inconsistent with a simple fall. The coroner figured Desousa’s death was anything but accidental and ruled it a homicide.
Ottawa homicide detectives were called in and, on Tuesday afternoon, Desousa’s son and his girlfriend were charged with first-degree murder.

Manucha: Alberta and B.C. have a means to resolve the pipeline dispute
Recently, the British Columbia government refused to allow increased shipments of bitumen from the Alberta oilsands to B.C. ports. In response, the Alberta government has blocked all imports of B.C. wine, and has threatened to expand the scope of its retaliatory measures.
This ongoing trade war between Alberta and B.C. doesn’t look all that different from the trade disputes that regularly take place between countries. But whereas international trade disputes have the World Trade Organizati
