Two people have been charged with first-degree murder after the death of an elderly woman at a home on Parkrose Private in Orléans.
Maria Desousa, 81, was brought to the Montfort Hospital around 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Police said Desousa was already dead when she was taken to the hospital. According to a court document, Desousa was allegedly killed two days before, on Thursday, Feb. 8.
Police said Desousa, who did not live in Ottawa, was visiting family at a house on Parkro

Capitalizing on Valentine's Day with half-naked protesters, financial advice and a war on slumlords
Florists and greeting-card vendors aren’t the only ones capitalizing on Valentine’s Day. Every year a wide variety of organizations hitch their causes to the international day for celebrating love, hoping for free publicity. Some favourites this year:
Love & animals
Activists from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals adore protesting while naked or scantily clad. Nubile young things are apparently a sure way to attract attention to the cruelty of eating our furry friends o -
Renovation Transformation: Parisian roots sprout in Glebe home
Andrew Cameron and Susan D’Antoni planned on living in Paris for only two years.
They packed their belongings, said goodbye to their friends and locked the doors to their Glebe home thinking they would return in short time.
But two years quickly became two decades.
The couple, who have now been together for 35 years, fell in love with the Parisian lifestyle. The culture. The art galleries. The opera. In one of their apartments they could peer out of their windows and see Napoleon’s T -
Reevely: City makes plans for new central library, forgets it's also changing the roads around it
A city plan, released Tuesday, for a new central library and the buildings next to it is built on a layout for Slater and Albert streets that’s about to change.
The two plans for the same land at the southeast corner of LeBreton Flats don’t work together. The city can’t do them both at the same time. Yet officially, that’s what’s going to happen.
The central library is a major civic investment, meant to bridge downtown and LeBreton Flats for a century. How the piece -
Ottawa's fifth homicide victim a 'happy-go-lucky' man
Friends of Egal Daud, Ottawa’s fifth homicide victim of this year, have expressed surprise and shock at his violent death, saying he was a happy-go-lucky, good-hearted person.
“He was a kind and gentle soul, and he was funny,” said Crystal Curry, who had known the 30-year-old Daud for four years. “But he didn’t talk much about his personal stuff. I didn’t even know if he had a girlfriend, that’s how much he didn’t talk about his personal life.&rdqu -
How legitimate is grieving a celebrity?
Two months ago, I woke up to the anxious eyes of my husband.
He rubbed my back gently, then told me.
Jonghyun, the lead singer of my favourite South Korean pop band, SHINee, had been found unresponsive in a rented studio apartment in Seoul.
He killed himself by burning coal briquettes in a frying pan, which produce carbon monoxide. In the smoky apartment, Jonghyun’s body was found lying next to a bed. He was just 27, another member in that awful club that already harbours the likes o -
'They are stressed out': Long-term care staff fear underfunding could lead to tragedy
Staff working overnight at long-term care homes fear chronic underfunding will lead to tragedy, say members of the union that represents the workers.
“They are stressed out,” said Louis Rodrigues, first vice-president of the Ontario Council of Hospital Unions.
“In the nighttime, they are worried that if there was a fire or something, they couldn’t evacuate those patients, given the number of staff.”
Registered practical nurses and personal support workers, who do th -
Hintonburg community trades extra height for affordable housing
A nine-storey rental building on Wellington Street West would be taller than land-use rules allow, but the councillor for Hintonburg and the community association are willing to make a trade: more height for two affordable units.
It’s a small number of low-cost homes in the proposed 57-unit rental building at 979 Wellington St. W., but the deal between the community and the developer could inspire other builders and resident groups to negotiate affordable housing in new residential buildin -
Jonathan Pitre to undergo gallbladder surgery
Jonathan Pitre will undergo gallbladder surgery Wednesday in an effort to relieve his persistent fevers and debilitating nausea.
Pitre, 17, will have his gallbladder removed at the University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital, where he had a stem cell transplant last April to halt the advance of his blistering skin disease, epidermolysis bullosa (EB).
Pitre’s surgery is also complicated by his EB.
Doctors are hoping they’ll be able to use keyhole incisions and lapa -

What's open and closed on Family Day, Feb. 19
Many stores and services across the city will be closing or modifying their hours on Ontario’s Family Day holiday.
Here’s a list of things to look out for:
Most shopping malls will be closed on Family Day: Tanger Outlets, Bayshore, Carlingwood, Lincoln Fields, Westgate, St. Laurent and Place d’Orléans are all shutting their doors, as are the LCBO and Beer Stores.
However, the Rideau Centre will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., as will many shops in the ByWard Market and t -
Burton: Canada must smarten up on its China policy
If you believe the Chinese Xinhua News Agency, Canada is blithely considering a Chinese Communist proposal to sell out the liberal values that define global institutions such as the United Nations and World Trade Organization, in favour of a made-in-China model that will serve Beijing’s authoritarian nationalist aspirations.
China’s official state news agency said that Song Tao – who heads the Communist Party Central Committee’s International Liaison Department – br -

Cohen: Canadian Jews should ask lobby group some tough questions
Every week or so an invitation, announcement or appeal arrives in my inbox heralding the work of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), Canada’s leading Jewish lobby.
The message is often under the name of Martin Sampson, its director of communication and marketing. But it might also come from one of the self-described legion of “analysts, public affairs specialists, web and social-media practitioners, relationship-builders and media-relations experts” in CIJA’s -

Ottawa police blameless in 2017 drug overdose death, SIU says
The Special Investigations Unit has terminated its investigation into the death of a 21-year-old man who was found without vital signs in an Ottawa apartment on March 7, 2017.
In a report, the SIU said a member of the victim’s family contacted Ottawa police to report that the man had sent a message indicating he intended to take his life. Police were dispatched to check on the man’s well-being. The family member then also contacted 911, prompting the emergency dispatch of para -

Consultant envisions three high-rise buildings in new library district
A consultant’s preliminary vision for a future central library district calls for a group of buildings up to 25 storeys tall on National Capital Commission land at the corner of Albert and Booth streets.
The planning rationale, created by FoTenn and filed at city hall this week, calls for the structures just to the west of a future four-storey central library at city-owned 557 Wellington St., which is at the intersection of Albert and Commissioner streets.
The rough concept plan considers -

Bomb it and rebuild it -Cost to rebuild Iraq more than $88 billion this time around
In 2013 a U.S. government special auditor who was tasked to look into how that country’s tax dollars were spent rebuilding Iraq issued its last report. The Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction concluded that at least $8 billion of the $60 billion the U.S. spent had been wasted.
By then there was a realization among at least some Americans that the 2003 invasion of Iraq had turned into a fiasco. Saddam Hussein didn’t have any weapons of mass destruction, despite the -
