The Senators need to do something bold to win back their infuriated fan base.
Something profoundly local in nature.
For starters: get down on bended knee and beg Cyril Leeder to come back as president and chief executive of the franchise, promising to let him do his job. Under the right circumstances, I believe Leeder, a Senators co-founder, tireless worker and immensely popular figure in the community, would return if owner Eugene Melnyk granted him the parameters to do his job.

Salvation army not keen on 140-bed cap for future Vanier shelter
The Salvation Army isn’t keen on the idea of the city’s regulating the number of shelter beds in a social services complex the organization plans to construct in Vanier.
Glenn van Gulik, spokesman for the Salvation Army, said the organization believes council has already addressed the planning questions through the November 2017 vote approving the necessary land-use changes for 333 Montreal Rd.
“We’ve already been down this path,” van Gulik said. “City co -
'De-policing' a matter of 'self-survival', police union president says
“De-policing” — when officers avoid unnecessary interactions with the public for fear of being scrutinized — is a simple survival tactic, says the president of Ottawa Police Association.
“What you were trained to do is no longer acceptable. What is the immediate reaction? Cease any activities that would be conducive to exposing yourself,” Matt Skof said Monday. “It’s simple self-survival. You don’t expose yourself to liability, so you return -
Poor weather dampens Mosaïvernales early attendance
Organizers of Mosaïvernales are trying to put their opening two weekends in perspective and cross their fingers that Mother Nature will be kinder over the next three weeks.
The display of more than two dozen illuminated snow sculptures in Gatineau’s Jacques-Cartier Park — essentially the wintertime version of the popular MosaïCanada150 display that attracted 1.3 million visitors last year — suffered unseasonably high temperatures when it opened on the last weekend in -
Police identify Ottawa's fifth homicide victim of 2018
Ottawa police have identified the homicide victim whose body was found Sunday in the City View district but have released few other details.
Police said Egal Daud, 30, had been shot. His body was found at about 10 a.m. in a car in the parking lot of an apartment complex at 32-50 Northview Rd., which is southeast of the intersection of Merivale and Baseline roads.
On Sunday afternoon officers in two SUVs sat parked alongside the white, snow-covered Honda Civic in which the body was found.

Snapshots and quick reviews from the 2018 TD Ottawa Winter Jazz Festival
Last weekend, I took in as much as of the 2018 TD Ottawa Winter Jazz Festival as my schedule would allow, which turned out to be four set-long concerts on Friday and then four more on Saturday night. Here’s a rundown of what I heard, with copious photos by Dan Nawrocki.

Reevely: Tories' fiasco in Ottawa West-Nepean is how you lose a winnable seat
Three days after the Ontario Progressive Conservatives booted Ottawa West-Nepean candidate Karma Macgregor out of her nomination, the would-be MPP kept turtling Monday.
Macgregor was one of two casualties in a purge by the Tories’ central nominations committee, which re-examined controversies over some candidates chosen when Patrick Brown was the party leader.
Since then, she’s tweeted nothing, posted nothing to her campaign Facebook page. She didn’t return calls to her ca -
Car and transport truck collide on Queensway
The driver of a small car suffered minor injuries from an air bag after his car and a transport truck collided Monday.
Ottawa paramedics said the collision happened around 2:45 p.m. in the westbound lanes near Bayshore.
Two lanes were temporarily closed while a crew cleaned up spilled diesel oil.
The car driver didn’t need to go to hospital. The trucker was not injured.

Orr: Here's how the Olympics obsess over women's bodies
I am struck by the difference between Winter and Summer Olympics media coverage and commentary. During the former, there is an utter lack of concern that women athletes are “masquerading” as men or have intersex variations, traits that, according to dominant interphobic logic, supposedly discount them as “real” women.
During the Summer Olympics, there are countless articles scrutinizing women athletes’ bodies, particularly women of colour from the Global South who r -

Canada's future role in Iraq still unclear as Sajjan heads to Europe for meetings
Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan will travel to Rome and Brussels from February 13-15 to participate in a meeting of defence ministers from the main force contributors in the war against the Islamic State. Sajjan will also participate in a meeting of NATO defence ministers.
His trip comes as the Liberal government has yet to decide what comes next for Canadian military personnel involved in the war against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

Editorial: If police aren't policing – this is a problem
If Ottawa police officers are avoiding certain types of police work because they believe taking action could land them in hot water, we have a problem. Chief Charles Bordeleau and the Police Services Board must find out if it’s true and if so, why.
In brief, research from Greg Brown, a Carleton doctoral researcher and former police officer, finds officers are fearful of being watched, judged and condemned for their actions in dicey situations, so they opt to practise “F.I.D.O. &ndash -
Anderson: Why the federal NDP needs to tack left
As the federal NDP approaches its Ottawa convention Feb. 16-18 with new leader Jagmeet Singh, its path forward is not clear. Faced with a Liberal government verbally tacking to the left – if ultimately not delivering the goods on issues such as the environment, tax reform, foreign aid and proportional representation – the NDP hovers around 17.5 per cent in recent polls. Those are the kind of results it used to have before the 2011 Orange Wave.
The NDP lost the last election in Canada -
Fire forces 125 to evacuate daycare centre
Fire officials say an electrical panel caught fire in a daycare centre on St. Raymond Boulevard in Gatineau on Monday, briefly forcing 125 children and staff out of the building.
Firefighters were able to put it out before the fire spread and said damage was minor.
The fire at Au Pays de Cornemuse began around 9:45 a.m. and Gatineau sent eight trucks and 25 firefighters. They had the fire out within 20 minutes, and opened up the building to clear away the smoke.
The reason for the fire is s -

Stop bashing the police
Re: The ‘de-policing’ of Ottawa? Feb. 12.

Wrong-way driver on Highway 5 faces impaired driving charge
A man driving south in the northbound lanes of Highway 5 in Gatineau somehow avoided hitting anyone, but ended up under arrest anyway.
It happened a little before 2 a.m. on Friday. An RCMP officer had stopped by the side of the northbound lanes of the autoroute to help with a broken-down car.
Then he saw a car coming southbound toward him, on the wrong side of the highway — which has a concrete median. It nearly hit him.
The Mountie set off after the wrong-way driver, while Gatineau office -

Jonathan and Gibson: A boy and his dog
Eighteen months after leaving for Minnesota, Jonathan Pitre continues to wait for medical clearance to return home to Russell and to his beloved dog, Gibson.
Pitre, 17, has suffered through two stem cell transplants, two rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, and a host of life-threatening complications. He’s still dealing with fevers and nausea — problems that may be linked to his gallbladder.

Son charged with murder in mother's death in Gatineau
Gatineau police have laid a second-degree murder charge against the son of a woman who was found dead in an east-end home two weeks ago.

Revamped Les Misérables returns to NAC
To the barricades! The student protests are coming back!
I’m referring, of course, to the ones in Les Misérables, Victor Hugo’s great slab of a historical novel set against the background of youth-driven armed insurrection on the streets of 19th-century Paris.
This week Broadway Across Canada, in association with Evenko, is bringing the show’s latest incarnation to the National Arts Centre, where it plays Tuesday to Sunday. This “definitive” touring version, -

Sunshine and -4 C but it's getting really cold tonight
Walk and drive with care this Monday morning, folks.
And motorists, leave plenty of time to chip your car out of that block of ice.
But the forecast definitely looks brighter with mainly sunny skies and a high of -4 C before it’s back in the deep-freeze overnight with a low of -21 C.
For Tuesday it’s sunny again but the high of -6 C will feel like a brisk -25, Environment Canada reports.
Today is definitely a day to do the #PenguinWalk.#OTTweather #freezingrain pic.twitter.com/kmBMN1 -
Ottawa cop turned researcher finds decline in proactive policing
Ottawa police officers are “de-policing” — or avoiding proactive policing — out of fear of being scrutinized by the public, according to the groundbreaking study of an Ottawa police officer turned doctoral researcher.
It is the first study of its kind in Canada that measures what has largely been anecdotal among officers who describe the F.I.D.O mentality of “F**k it, drive on,” when confronted with what many police see as un-winnable situations that will only -

Old rules but new pollutants: scientists ask for changes in Canada's pollution laws
Pollution has a new face, nothing like the traditional image of a giant smokestack or a factory pouring smelly goop into a river.
Modern pollution — at least the toxic chemical kind — is smaller, more personal, from 35 million Canadians who are all individual sources of toxic bits that add up in the environment.
These come from personal products that we all use in our cellphones, furniture, televisions or bathrooms, chemicals that travel down the drain and into lakes and rivers -
