Why is dating so awful — and other questions
Dating can elicit anything from excitement, to frustration, to dread. The Citizen spoke to local dating coach Irene Yarkoni to get some insight, and some advice.
Why is dating such a horrible experience for so many people?
Most people experience disappointment or frustration in dating and relationships because of the huge discrepancy between what they want and what they get. They go out on a date they expect it to be perfect. They think they’ll meet someone then they’ll bec -
Scanlan: Russians dance around doping sanctions to put large contingent into the Games
Canada’s Olympics opened in the most Canadian way: with an apology.
Exactly what the apology was for isn’t clear, but just in case a Canadian might have offended a member of the Russian delegation, a Canadian Olympic Committee type sent out a missive to the Russian team (can we call them the Russian team?) to say sorry.
It was a bit like the parent of the bratty kid at daycare offering a blanket apology at the end of the day, for whatever junior might have said or done to offend anyo -

Valerie June on pop music, plants and being rhythmically challenged
Tennessee singer-songwriter Valerie June is getting tired of reading the same thing in every article that’s written about her.Writers, and here we go, inevitably cite the fact that her dad was a concert promoter and she grew up under the influence of the R & B and soul artists he booked. We also like to mention that she learned to sing in church. It’s all true, and certainly comes across in her music. Her style is a roosty, evocative mix of gospel, blues, bluegrass and soul, as yo -
Highway 417 traffic snarled after vehicles struck by truck wheel
The occupants were thankfully unhurt when two passenger vehicles were struck by a wheel that flew off a delivery truck on Highway 417 Friday morning, leading to traffic snarls on both sides of the highway.

Editorial: Love in the time of #MeToo
Can there be romance in the era of #MeToo? Can there still be sexual spontaneity, instant attraction, sudden and deep passion? Can men still approach women? Is flirting sexual harassment? The past several months have left some adults wondering what the rules of modern behaviour are, and how to act if those rules aren’t respected.
A massive study released Friday by the Angus Reid Institute offers both despair and hope about relations between the genders. On the dark side, it found:

Edgewater: Townhomes tucked into natural setting in Orléans
A new enclave in south Orléans benefits from the seeming incongruity of being both in an established neighbourhood and a natural setting.
Called Edgewater, the collection of 55 townhomes and three singles by builder Glenview Homes does walk on the edge – of the Mud Creek ravine, that is.
The strip that marks a dividing line between Minto-built Trailsedge to the west and Richcraft-built Trailsedge to the east is tucked up against the natural ravine on one side, and a community park o -
Nussbaum: Here's the link between the health of democracy and the LRT
This week’s developments on the light-rail transit file have left me pondering questions about core roles and responsibilities in our democratic system.
Much ink has been spilled about the $1 million penalty that many residents and councillors, including me, had understood to be in play the minute the handover date moved beyond May 24, 2018.
It turns out the project agreement actually provided the contractor the ability to push the handover date as far back as a year later – with no -

Gormley: Here's why we're losing interest in the Olympics
Might I interest you in considering a subject that does not interest you? The Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Winter Games have begun, and who cares!?
Certainly not me and probably not you, for we, like nearly everyone else on the planet, will not have bought tickets; if Olympic TV viewership trends continue, nor will we be watching the proceedings with anything approaching the level of dedication that would please the creators of soft drink advertisements.
People are very excited about attending a per -

Kurl: Sexual misconduct – same crap, different era
When I was growing up, they told us girls we could have it all. Careers in sciences and maths (or whatever we wanted), financial independence, sex appeal, kids … like, ALL of it. Along with those Spice Girls CDs, we bought it.
We knew our mums were the glass-ceiling breakers. The ones who wore horrible mousey suits that mirrored male clothing, the ones who walked through life with an “ain’t no one going to protect you but you” mentality. They went to work armed with the -
Angus Reid: How 'old guys' like me view the #MeToo movement
I’m one of the old guys, born in 1947 and a witness to the sexual revolution of the ’60s and ’70s, which coincided with the arrival of the birth-control pill and a generational shift through which female participation in the workforce more than doubled from 1960 to 1980.
The macho culture that permeated much of the business world in the ’60s was a hangover from the Second World War and the masculine organizational dynamics of most of the 20th century: lots of booze, cigar -

Dawson: That late-night call from your parents – is someone dead!?
It’s late. The call or the text comes from your parents.
“You up?”
“You home?”

Sometimes, that unexpect
