Electrocution victim Sabryna Mongeon improves, but faces long road to recovery
After nearly two months and 12 operations involving a series of amputations and skin grafts, Gatineau electrocution victim Sabryna Mongeon has really just begun her challenging road to recovery.
Sabryna, 18, suffered devastating injuries on a Christmas Eve after her car crashed on Outaouais back roads. She was unhurt until she stepped out of her wrecked car and was jolted by a massive charge from downed hydro wires. She eventually managed to crawl back into her vehicle, where she was discov -
Reevely: New money helps Odawa program keep Indigenous accused out of jail, but it's only a start
The provincial government is spending millions of dollars to make Ottawa’s courts work better, Attorney General Yasir Naqvi said at his old University of Ottawa law school this week, and the smallest piece of it might be the most important: a tiny program for helping Indigenous people get bail when they have nobody to stand up in court and help them.
Naqvi pledged $7 million for renovations to the Ottawa courthouse (most of it’s for security, actually, which is only about making the -
Smaller, glassy addition for Château Laurier revealed in new design
The owner of the Château Laurier revealed a new, glassy design for its proposed addition on Thursday, hoping a scaled-down concept will win over critics.
The eight-storey addition on the north side of the historic hotel would have 171 long-term accommodation suites, compared to the original concept that had 11 and 12 storeys, and 218 suites. The number of parking spots in the proposed five-level underground garage is 370, down from the 385 in the previous design.

Jazzman Chet Doxas finds inspiration in 1980s graffiti art, No Wave music
Over the past five years, when saxophonist Chet Doxas was touring with rocker and fellow Montreal son Sam Roberts, the hornman spent many an afternoon off at a museum. At some point, the visual stimulation began triggering music in Doxas’s head.
“All of a sudden, I would be standing in front of a painting, and it would go boom … sometimes these two- or three-voice melodies, like bass and harmonies, would come to me,” Doxas says.
Later, Doxas did what he could to make the -

Was the Trudeau government actually unaware of legal action against military personnel?
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is facing some embarrassing questions after it was revealed that his government was trying to quash a class action lawsuit on sexual misconduct in the Canadian Forces.
Trudeau has attacked his own Justice Department lawyers for their defence in an $800-million lawsuit over harassment in the military because it doesn’t align with his or his government’s beliefs. On Wednesday, Trudeau said he had asked Justice Minister and Attorney General Jody Wilson-Rayb -

Carleton student's killer escapes from N.B. prison
The man who savagely stabbed to death a 22-year-old Carleton University student a judge would later call an “angel on earth” has escaped from Dorchester Penitentiary.

Renovation Transformation: Black mold spurs complete reno of Westboro home
Joshua Svatek had been struggling with allergies since moving to Ottawa almost nine years ago.
He had all the common symptoms — sneezing, sore eyes, and a stuffed nose — in addition to pounding headaches that began when he woke up.
The symptoms would likely had worsened if he hadn’t chosen to renovate his home near Westboro Beach.
Turns out it wasn’t just allergies. He was feeling the effects of having an invasion of black mold in the ceiling of his bedroom.

Going batty: Couple living nightmare after buying 'dream-home' farmhouse
When Matthew Dewan and Katrina Arcand learned that the grey farmhouse near Arcand’s childhood home was for sale, it seemed the answer to their need for more space.
They needed room for four children. The Kemptville-area farmhouse on an acre-and-a-half of land near the Rideau River had enough space for everyone and even had a separate playroom.
“I grew up as a farm girl. It was the greatest thing. I want my children to be here,” said Arcand.
