Could suicide risk be ID'd through a blood test? New Ottawa research chair offers hope
The emails started arriving soon after a press release went out heralding the stunning research findings, led by young molecular biologist Zachary Kaminsky.
“A blood test for suicide?” was the headline on the release issued by Johns Hopkins University’s school of medicine in 2014. It explained that Kaminsky and other researchers at the Baltimore institution had discovered a chemical alteration in a gene called SKA2 linked to stress reduction. That finding could help doctors pre -
Reevely: After years of promises, city blows LRT deadline with a shrug
Ottawa’s light-rail project is six months late and well, what are you gonna do? These things happen.
The rhetoric has shifted a bit, maybe you’ve noticed, from “On time and on budget!” to “¯\_(ツ)_/¯”.
The ominous rumbling began almost as soon as city council approved a budget for 2018 that assumed trains would start rolling at the beginning of July, as has been planned and promised for years. The Rideau Street sinkhole and numerous other const -
Maniwaki courthouse may return to having just one special constable, union fears
QUEBEC CITY — The president of the union representing Quebec’s 325 special constables, whose job is to protect the lives and property of everyone at the province’s courthouses, said Tuesday nothing he has heard from government witnesses has convinced him the decision to add a second constable at the Maniwaki courthouse will be permanent.
Last week an 18-year-old man was shot during an altercation with the lone special constable on duty at the Maniwaki courthouse.

City to delay opening of LRT until end of November
Nov. 2 is the new date for the Rideau Transit Group to turn over a completed Confederation Line LRT to the City of Ottawa, but the builder won’t be penalized for missing a May deadline.
Mayor Jim Watson announced the date on Tuesday during a finance and economic development committee meeting, with city management providing the rationale for delaying the project by more than five months.
“When this whole process started seven years ago, coming up with a specific date was not exactly a -
City pushed to make new Albert-Slater juncture a landmark
A proposed reconstruction of the western juncture of Albert and Slater streets should have a goal of turning a dead zone into a gateway for the downtown core and a redeveloped LeBreton Flats, city planners have heard.
The city’s urban design review panel has completed a formal analysis of the city’s plan to change the major east-west streets after the Confederation Line LRT opens this year.
The independent peer-review panel has experts from outside of Ottawa City Hall, including some -

Scanlan: Two warriors of the hardwood rebound from cancer and cardiac surgeries
They removed the man’s cancerous bladder and rejigged his insides from the liver on down so he could function somewhat normally.
For good measure, they hit his cells hard with chemotherapy.
Not having witnessed these medical procedures for ourselves, it was miracle enough to watch Geoff Gruson move freely around the Jewish Community Centre basketball court recently, using his skill, experience and vision to dish to the open man.

Skof: The Ottawa police need to solve staffing issues – now
Ottawa’s politicians are once again facing pressures as a result of the startling escalation of gun-related violence in January.
Civic leaders, including Mayor Jim Watson, Police Services Board Chair Eli El-Chantiry, Chief Charles Bordeleau and others, have made an effort to present a united front against this violence.
With more show than substance, they rolled out the well-worn script of “police focus and community engagement.” Its purpose was to assuage Ottawa residents&rsqu -

House Works: Your questions on water softeners, damaged table, basement condensation
Salt-Free Water Softeners
Q: What’s your opinion of electronic, salt-free, water softening systems?
A: I’ve tried electronic salt-free water softeners a couple of times in the past for several months each time and I noticed no difference in the build-up of scale in our kettle, faucets and shower doors.
We have moderately hard water at my house (about 16 grains of hardness,) and the systems I tried made no difference that I could see.

This driver landed first in icy water and then in hot, the OPP report.
Police were called to a vehicle in the water off Westport, about 100 km southwest of Ottawa, at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday.
After an investigation, they say a northbound vehicle failed to stop at a stop sign on Bedford Street then collided with an eastbound vehicle on Main Street before continuing north over a dock and into Upper Rideau Lake.
It came to rest “almost fully submerged.”

Weather: Early flurries make streets greasy, more snow expected Wednesday
Ottawa’s winter has been snowy and it’s getting snowier with a risk of flurries every day this week and 5 to 10 cm of white stuff Wednesday.
Flurries began early Tuesday and Environment Canada is predicting clouds, a 60 per cent chance of continued flurries, with winds becoming westerly at 20 km/h near noon and a high of -6 C.
The snow was just heavy enough to make things slipper during the morning commute.

Shot beagle Sadie Mae 'happy, loving' despite more medical hurdles
Sadie Mae, the “sweet” beagle that arrived at the Ottawa Humane Society after being shot and abandoned on a Carp trail last fall, has now had to undergo yet more surgery Monday, this time to remove her spleen after vets found a tumour.
The spleen removal was done at “a sophisticated veterinary clinic that specializes in complicated surgeries,” that can also provide round-the-clock recovery, the OHS reported.
She’s faced more setbacks including the discovery of a min -

Jason Momoa, the actor who plays the King of the Seas, is coming to the nation’s capital as a celebrity guest at Ottawa Comiccon in May, according to the event’s organizers.
Momoa, who is best known for his roles as Aquaman in the recent Justice League film and the warlord Khal Drogo in the Game of Thrones TV series, is the biggest name so far on the event’s list of star guests. The actor was preparing to film the standalone Aquaman movie for a December 2018 release, which will -

When crews arrived, smoke was visible from the front door and a working fire was declared.
Firefighters brought the blaze under control about 2 1/2 hours later. One person was displaced.

Bells Corners turns to Neighbourhood Watch to calm crime jitters
Bells Corners signalled its desire to restore order to its neighbourhoods at a spirited meeting Monday about community safety.
Only weeks after a bizarre car-ramming fatality, a pair of shootings and an apparent hate crime, about 150 residents turned out to lay the groundwork for a Neighbourhood Watch program that would encompass the whole west-end community.
Though technically a meeting about the eyes-and-ears program, worried residents used the opportunity to ask Ottawa police about the loss o -
France joins Canada and other nations in intelligence sharing group
It’s often referred to as the “Five Eyes.” That group involves the long-time traditional allies – the U.S., Canada, Britain, Australia and New Zealand – who share intelligence information.
Now, it is being dubbed as the “Five Eyes plus France.”
French defence journalists were told Monday that France has now been brought in to the fold, attending meetings in Washington to share information with the Five Eyes intelligence agencies.

January house prices jumped fastest in western, wealthiest districts
Ottawa’s real-estate market split in two in January as the number of residential properties sold actually slipped year over year while there was a surge in the sale of condominiums.
Perhaps not surprisingly, prices in the two sectors diverged. The average price for residential properties jumped 8.8 per cent year over year to $427,500 in January. In sharp contrast, the average price for a condominium in Ottawa slipped 8.6 per cent to $263,750, according to estimates published Monday by the
