The Subject Tonight is Love (Binxtown Records) Kate McGarry, Gary Versace, Keith Ganz
The most natural thing in the world for a jazz singer to do is to sing a love song. The Great American Songbook is full of great ones — love songs that gush, love songs that lament, songs about love that shines, love that endures, love that went wrong, love that wasn’t returned.
But to sing love songs as well as Kate McGarry does is another matter entirely. And then, to collect a diverse set of love

Government to lease towing vessels for the Canadian Coast Guard
Public Services and Procurement Canada, on behalf of the Canadian Coast Guard, issued a Request for Proposal on Monday to solicit bids for the lease of two vessels. Those ships will be capable of towing large commercial vessels, including tankers and container ships, as part of a response to ships in distress off the coast of British Columbia, according to the federal government’s news release.
The ships will be leased by the Canadian Coast Guard and operated by crews trained in Canad -

Reevely: Patrick Brown's final gift to his party is a bloodbath over carbon taxes
All the Progressive Conservative party’s leadership candidates are skeptical of carbon taxes, seeking support from party members who hate them even more, but their party is counting on billions of dollars in carbon-tax money to pay for its election promises.
They need the cash even more than the Liberals do. That’s an awkward position for a party of tax-fighters, and one Doug Ford, Christine Elliott and Caroline Mulroney somehow have to reconcile.

Editorial: The coming pot patchwork is no big deal
It’s tradition for legally under-age Ottawans to cross the bridges for an evening of government-permitted bar-hopping in Gatineau. There’s some hand-wringing, but for the most part it’s just part of life in a metropolis with interprovincial bridges. The National Capital Region is, after all, a microcosm of Confederation.
One feature of our country is the sometimes-significant differences in rules between provinces. In Quebec, for example, the legal drinking age is 18 -

Whitcomb: Making mountains out of molehills on pot legalization
Many Canadian politicians are tying themselves in knots over pot, begging the federal government to extend the July 1 target date for legalizing cannabis use.
But many of the so-called problems they cite are molehills, needlessly being turned into mountains. Let’s look at some:
LAW AND ORDER
It will become legal for about 25 million Canadians to smoke pot as of July 1 – but it will remain illegal for those under 18 or 19.
This means that enforcement should require a fraction as -

Will Boeing take a pass on Canada's fighter jet competition?
A number of journalists, including myself, have pointed out that Boeing representatives did not attend the Jan. 22 industry day in Ottawa for the new RCAF fighter jet project. It was the first such industry day and attendance was not required.
But Boeing’s absence has led some to question whether the company will take part in the upcoming competition. That, however, might be jumping to conclusions.
Boeing spokesman Scott Day had this to say:
“Boeing values Canada as a customer and su -

Justin Timberlake bringing tour to Ottawa on Oct. 22
The morning after his Super Bowl performance, Justin Timberlake announced a string of new tour dates including an Oct. 22 stop at the Canadian Tire Centre.
His boosters said Monday the second leg of North American dates is due to sold-out shows on tour in support of the “highly-anticipated” Man of the Woods album, which was released earlier this month, and after his “epic” half-time outing.
Timberlake hadn’t toured since 2014.

Firefighters confirmed that no one was trapped after being called at about 8:30 a.m. to the car reportedly on its roof at Queen Elizabeth Drive near Bank Street but asked that motorists slow down and move over as first responders tackled the crash.
