Court guards missed chances to defuse Maniwaki confrontation, expert says
The video of a shooting in a Maniwaki courtroom shows a series of stages where court security could have taken control and avoided a shooting, says a former U.S. police officer who now teaches law.
But the court guards let those chances go by, and conflict escalated out of control, says Seth Stoughton, who offered his analysis when reached by this newspaper.

Bordeleau: Here's how police are tackling Ottawa's burgeoning gun problem
Like other major cities across Canada, Ottawa has seen a rise in gun violence in recent years. We know how unsettling this is for our communities and want to thank our community leaders and residents for their continued assistance and ideas to combat this and other crimes.
Gun violence is a top operational priority for our police service and we have a refocused strategy to address it. That strategy includes an organizational-wide focus directly targeted at the activities and people involved in t -
Egan: The crisis of gun violence, locked and loaded
A simplified look at gun violence, in five easy pieces.
The short-hand, for those in a hurry: carding is now harder, bail is getting easier, the new police “service delivery” is still evolving, the courage of community informants is unreliable or even unwise and the flow of illegal guns is on our doorstep, in ways rarely spoken of or dealt with.
Now put the pieces together. Have we built a safe haven or a house of horrors? It is difficult to know, but there are hints this dish &mdash -

Province provides $10.5 million to build new French Catholic elementary school in Riverside South
The province will spend $10.5 million for a new French Catholic elementary school in the fast-growing south end of Ottawa.
The funding announcement made Thursday is great news for parents in Riverside South, Leitrim, Greely, Metcalfe and Blossom Park, said Johanne Lacombe, the chair of the Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est. The new kindergarten-to-Grade 6 school will take some of the pressure off the board’s Bernard-Grandmaître elementary school, which is full.

Four charged as 'high-risk takedown' nets drugs, loaded handguns
Ottawa police are hailing drug officers who nabbed four men in a “high-risk takedown” Wednesday that didn’t just net narcotics but took two guns off the street.
One was a loaded semi-automatic handgun; the other handgun was one of several firearms stolen in a Gatineau break-in on Dec. 3.
It was about 8 p.m. Wednesday when officers spotted alleged drug deals being conducted from a vehicle near Tillbury Avenue and Churchill Avenue North in the city’s west end.

Shook: Trudeau government should re-think how it pays prisoners
The federal government should reconsider a decision, made in 2013, that imposed a 30 per cent pay cut on prisoners’ wages, for the work they do that contributes to the operation and maintenance of the prison.
The justification for the clawback was to account for the cost of food and accommodation. The then-Conservative government also cut the $2.20 per hour payment prisoners received for their productive labour at CORCAN, the correctional service’s “training centre. -

But the New York-based singer-songwriter, 30, now knows her studies ultimately fed into her art. “A lot of my degree was lying in bed and considering a poem, and giving it as much time and quiet as I needed to come up with something interesting.
“My songwriting process is very similar,” she says. “It involves sitting with lyrics for a long time, maybe sitting with a -
Sketching the troops, from Iraq to Ukraine
When illustrator Richard Johnson went to the Ukraine with the Canadian military in 2015, he declined the VIP accommodations, asking instead to bunk with the soldiers.“I like to get close to the grunts,” said the artist-journalist in an interview, “so I ended up in this huge, creaky, damp dorm building in what was a Soviet military base. The bunks were three high and we were jammed into this space. It was damp and gray and miserable and rainy. It really felt very Soviet.”J -

Weather forecast is for swinging temps, snow squall watch
After Wednesday’s delivery of white stuff, Mother Nature is throwing every kind of weather at us Thursday, capping the good times off with possible snow squalls later this afternoon or evening.

Crabtree and Beaudan: Lessons Ottawa can learn from the Amazon HQ2 bid
