An Ottawa police constable couldn’t believe his eyes after a driver and passenger in the same vehicle swapped seats while allegedly speeding at 121 km/h on Limebank Road Wednesday.
Const. Phil Kane said he was patrolling traffic when he saw a GMC pickup truck speeding northbound on the 80-kilometre per hour stretch of Limebank Road, just south of River Road.

The CHEO Dream home could (still) be yours
While you may not have won this year’s CHEO Dream home, you can still own it.
Dan Champagne — vice president, development and corporate relations at CHEO — said the grand prize winner, Sophie Rybak, chose not to live in the house because she needs a home that is accessible for a family member who has mobility issues.
Champagne said there are a variety of reasons winners choose to not live in CHEO dream homes.

Four wards might miss out on $10M 'Christmas miracle'
Four wards might not get a penny from the extra $10 million shovelled into asset maintenance for 2018.
The list of allocations will be up for approval at a finance and economic development committee meeting on Tuesday. There are some eye-catching numbers in the ward-by-ward breakdown, like the four zeros in a column summarizing the amount divvied up from the $10 million.
Alta Vista, Rideau-Rockcliffe, Rideau-Vanier and Somerset won’t receive extra asset renewal funding if council approves -
Crime Stoppers offering $2,000 for tips leading to illegal guns
Crime Stoppers says it will pay $2,000 for tips leading to the seizure of illegal guns in response to an increase in the city’s gun violence.
The $2,000 — the maximum cash reward offered by Crime Stoppers — will be offered between Feb. 1 and April 30.
” We have seen an increase in the reckless use of illegal firearms in public areas close to where children play in the daytime,” Richard McMullen, president of the National Capital Area Crime Stoppers, said in a releas -
Court upholds policy that doctors must refer patients for assisted death
In what is being called a “victory for patients’ rights,” an Ontario court has ruled that all doctors — including those who object for religious reasons — must refer patients for medically assisted death.
The ruling on Wednesday from the Ontario Superior Court was in response to a constitutional challenge led by the Christian Medical and Dental Society and five physicians, including Ottawa’s Dr. Agnes Tanguay. The challengers, who are conscientious objectors t -
Two men charged in swarming, victim stabbed near Tunney's Pasture
Ottawa police have laid charges on two men accused of swarming two victims and stabbing one of them at Tunney’s Pasture Tuesday night.
At 9:45 p.m., police said a man and woman were walking along a pathway by Tunney’s Pasture when four male suspects swarmed them. One of the suspects, armed with a knife, confronted the woman and took her purse, while the man was pushed to the ground and assaulted after the suspects demanded he give them his bag, police said.

Red-light camera revenue should go directly to road safety programs, mayor says
Fine revenue generated by Ottawa’s red-light cameras should go directly to police and the city’s road safety program, Mayor Jim Watson said Wednesday in his annual state of the city speech.
“I will propose that the next council allocate 100 per cent of this revenue to the police service and Safer Roads Ottawa for further enforcement and to strengthen road safety initiatives,” Watson said in his speech, which was at the beginning of the first council meeting of 2018.

Woman dies in hospital week after struck by car in Gatineau
A woman struck by a car last week in Gatineau died in hospital Wednesday, the city’s first traffic fatality of 2018.
The 59-year-old woman, who died at l’Hôpital de Hull, had suffered head injuries when she was struck at chemin d’Aylmer and chemin Fraser at 4:15 p.m. on Jan. 24, Gatineau police said.
The driver, a 25-year-old Ottawa man, has not been charged, police said, though an investigation continues. -
Mayor Watson sticks with plan on gun violence rather than asking province for backup
Mayor Jim Watson is sticking with a plan drawn up by Ottawa police brass in response to gun violence, rather than asking Queen’s Park to provide backup.
Responding to an opinion piece in the Ottawa Sun co-authored by Senator Vern White, Watson was cool to the former police chief’s idea of asking the province to send money for more police resources.
“If we’re going after the province, every other municipality is going to want money, too,” Watson said Wednesday at cit -

Two injured in fight at Maniwaki courthouse
There was a major police operation in central Maniwaki Wednesday afternoon after a fight at the town’s courthouse, where some witnesses reported hearing a gunshot.
The Sûreté du Québec have not confirmed whether a shot was fired, but said two people were taken to Maniwaki’s hospital with serious injuries.
Preliminary information is that one of the injured people was a man facing charges, and the other was a member of the court staff. Neither has been identified.

Canada's old Leopard 1 tanks for sale but no firm buyers at this point
Captain Scott Franklin, with the office of the Director Land Requirements, pointed out in a Jan. 23 article on the Army’s website that with the delivery of the new Leopard 2 Tank Mobility Implements in the fall of 2017, the last of the Army’s Leopard 1 tanks have been parked for good.
So what happens with those tanks?
Department of National Defence spokesman Daniel Le Bouthillier explained to Defence Watch what might happen with the surplus Leopard 1s:

Glavin: State of the union leaves Trump's global intentions muddy
In U.S. President Donald Trump’s 5,146-word state of the union address Tuesday, a mere 700 words or so were devoted to America’s role in the world, and it’s probably just as well. Owing to a series of baffling foreign-policy contradictions and conflicting positions that have pitted the White House against the Pentagon and the State Department in recent weeks, there would have been no way of knowing what to believe anyway.
Still, it’s hard to account for Trump’s tota -

Cohen: Donald Trump's blustering state of the union
Only on the eve of a super blue blood moon, promising a fleeting circumference of eerie, molten light, could a president of the United States deliver the state of union address that he did on Tuesday. A super blue blood moon, rarer than a blue moon, is otherworldly.
So was this speech.
Then again, creating an alternate universe is as natural as a lunar eclipse for Donald Trump. His presidency went through the looking glass on its first day. It lives in another dimension, immune to norms and narr -

CFB Rockcliffe site: New chance for builders to bid in Wateridge 'village within a city'
A year after sales launched at Wateridge Village, the former Canadian Forces Base Rockcliffe is starting to look like home. Residents are moving in, two new parks are already complete and even OC Transpo bus service is in place.
Meanwhile, the Canada Lands Company has issued a new invitation to bid on the remaining parcels of land in the project’s first phase before turning its sights to the next phase, senior director of real estate Jean Lachance said.

It’s higher in the sky, too, rising 27 degrees above the horizon at noon compared to 21 degrees in December. Overall we are getting as much sunshine at this time of years as we had back on Nov. 10.

Mental health: It's time we did more than just talk about it
Today is Bell Let’s Talk day. Since 2010, Bell has been hosting one day a year when it donates five cents for every social interaction facilitated by its network to a mental health initiative in Canada.
