The owners of the Westin Ottawa have placed the high profile hotel on the market as they continue to sell off several Canadian properties.
Starwood Capital has retained commercial real estate brokers Cushman & Wakefield to oversee the transaction. The company will also be overseeing the sale of Westin Hotels in Calgary and Edmonton.
The agent listing the properties refused to estimate the value of the hotels.
The move follows Starwood’s sale of Westin properties in Toronto and Vancouve

The tragic death of Ottawa's Cameron Scrim, killed in a hit-and-run
Nobody knew hard work like Cameron Scrim.
Dyslexic and funny as hell, he spent his high school nights at the kitchen table with his champion, Janet Scrim. She didn’t want her son to get left behind, so she spent her evenings guiding him through homework. And she rallied his teachers to help him graduate. The day he presented his diploma to his mother was a defining moment in their lives.
Scrim always had to work harder than most, especially when it came to things some take for grante -
Expensing NHL Classic tickets leads to councillors repaying taxpayers
Some Ottawa councillors who used their tax-funded office budgets to buy tickets for the NHL 100 Classic are paying the money back to the city.
The outdoor game between the Ottawa Senators and Montreal Canadiens at Lansdowne Park was on Dec. 16.
For councillors who used their office budgets to buy tickets, the spending showed up on the public disclosure of council office expenses.
Kanata South Coun. Allan Hubley expensed $355 on tickets but on Tuesday, he said he would reimburse the city, acknowl -

How Ontario has toughened careless driving penalties
After a history of emotionally-charged cases, there is finally a recognition in Ontario that a fatality caused by inattentive driving should not be treated like a speeding ticket or fender bender at a stop sign.
Last September, the Ministry of Transportation announced the Highway Traffic Act would be amended so the careless driving section takes into account death or bodily harm. The maximum possible fine would jump from $2,000 to $50,000 and potential jail terms would increase from six months t -
The advice to Rachel Homan's curling team: It's going to be loud at the Olympic Games
Even world champions feel like they could use some good advice.
So Rachel Homan and her teammates cast a wide net over the curling community to gather as many tips as possible before entering the five-ring Olympic circus at Pyeongchang in a couple of weeks.
The foursome based at the Ottawa Curling Club spoke to the Brad Jacobs and Jennifer Jones teams that won men’s and women’s Olympic gold for Canada at Sochi in 2014, as well as to their own alternate, Albertan Cheryl Bernard, who s -
Egan: 'This is an insult,' widower says about guilty plea in wife's death
Robert Cadieux, 51, was never given his day in court, so now his hours bubble with suspicion and anger.
The day he was denied — Jan. 9 — court accepted a guilty plea by a Quebec motorist who rear-ended the Cadieux vehicle on Highway 401, killing his wife Kristine, 32, and leaving Robert with injuries he has yet to recover from. Her death left him bereft, alone with three kids at home, and a sign-repair business he could no longer run.
Not only was he mystified how this happened in hi -

Feds should tell people how to grow pot safely in their homes, health unit says
If the federal government will let people grow pot in their homes, Health Canada better explain how to do it safely.
That’s one of the pieces of advice from Ottawa Public Health, months before marijuana hits the legal retail market and the federal government relaxes cannabis laws across the country.
The feds will allow adults to grow up to four marijuana plants in their homes for personal use.
Vera Etches, the acting medical officer of health at OPH, wrote to Health Canada earlier this mon -

Denley: PC infighting is getting worse and worse
In less than a week, the Ontario Progressive Conservatives have gone from a credible alternative government to a second-rate circus with a surplus of clowns.
After the sudden and shocking departure of leader Patrick Brown, the PCs had one credible path to victory. That was backing respected veteran MPP Vic Fedeli, who was caucus’s choice to carry the party through the election. Fedeli had vowed to stick with the platform the party had already released.
Instead, the party executive decided -

“It has been a chaotic time for our party, and a steady hand is needed at the helm,” Fedeli said in a news conference. “We have learned our party is in much worse shape than we knew. Fixing this will be a massive undertaking. But it is essential, if we are to win the next election.”

Cotton and Kitts: A new hospital in Ottawa – let's get underway
The opportunity to build a new health campus is rare and exciting. It’s our chance to shape our region’s health care for generations to come, and to strengthen Ottawa as a world leader in health research, innovation and care.
On Wednesday at Lansdowne’s Horticulture Building, we will take an important step towards realizing that goal by sharing an initial concept for the new campus of The Ottawa Hospital, to replace the almost-100-year-old Civic Campus. This initial concept, ba -

Denley: Here's why a PC leadership race would be a huge mistake
The Ontario Progressive Conservative Party has reached a decision point that will determine its future and shape politics in this province for many years to come.
There are two clear choices.
Members can support the approach taken by their elected representatives in caucus or they can back a do-over of leadership and even of the party platform just four months from the provincial election.
The caucus, to its credit, has reacted swiftly and logically to former leader Patrick Brown’s shockin -

Everyone knows that restaurant business booms on Valentine’s Day. Less well-known, however, is the answer to the question: What are Canada’s most romantic restaurants?
OpenTable, the online restaurant reservations service, has taken another stab at compiling just such a list of 100 restaurants ripe for lovers.

Cohen: Patrick Brown affair unveils a world of metaphorical mob rule
In 2016, over a class dinner on an out-of-town class field trip, one of my students was recalling her experience with Patrick Brown, until recently leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario.
She had met him on a flight to Toronto, she told the group. She described Brown as a roué, I recall, a seducer who had texted her, invited her to a bar and, over time, “hit” on her. She would later come to work in his constituency office.
There was no discernible anger or hur -

Pentagon accused of censoring unclassified Afghan information as Taliban make gains
The U.S. government’s Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction has issued a new report for Congress. SIGAR, as the inspector is known, keeps an eye on how the billions of U.S. tax dollars are spent in Afghanistan.
But things don’t appear to be going so well in Afghanistan and the Taliban and other insurgents have significantly ramped up their attacks. There have also been reports about the Taliban gaining control over increased amounts of territory.

Police probe hate posters on Bells Corners mosque
City police say that they were called in at about 7 a.m. Tuesday to investigate “white power” posters discovered at an Old Richmond Road mosque.
Witnesses described the posters as containing racist slogans and portraits of Adolf Hitler.
The mosque is near the intersection of Seyton Drive, near the spot where 17-year-old Nick Hickey was struck and killed two weeks ago.
A week later, shots were fired a block away.
The incident follows a weekend of national memorials commemorating the o -

House Works: Celebrating the revival of Harrowsmith, a Canadian rural-living icon
It always surprises me how many Canadians feel an attraction for rural life, even if they live in the city or suburbs.
This national tendency isn’t universal, of course, but it is noticeably different than what I find in places like Europe, for instance.
Maybe our attraction to gardening, preserving food, fixing up cottages or summer homes and connecting with the land comes from the fact that many of us Canadians are closer to our pioneer roots than other nations.
Some of us only need to g -

Sajjan called out for not helping DND employees affected by Phoenix pay debacle
The NDP’s Randall Garrison isn’t too happy about how Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan is dealing with Phoenix pay problems affecting Department of National Defence employees. Garrison told the House of Commons Monday during Question Period that in November during a committee meeting, Sajjan had promised to look into Phoenix pay issues from three DND employees in Garrison’s riding. That riding includes CFB Esquimalt in BC.
Sajjan apparently promised to fix those problems before Ch -
