Ontario’s Progressive Conservatives have hired an investigator to probe a complaint from their candidate in the south-Ottawa riding of Carleton that she was physically accosted by Ottawa Valley MPP Randy Hillier at a party convention in Ottawa in 2016.
Goldie Ghamari, the nominated Tory candidate in the new south-Ottawa riding of Carleton, wrote on Twitter Sunday night that “a sitting #PCPO MPP harassed me, intimidated me, & used his body to bully and scare me out of getting invo

What is sexual misconduct, exactly? Depends on who you ask
Patrick Brown’s fall from the leadership of the Ontario Progressive Conservatives was sudden after allegations of sexual misconduct were levelled against the Simcoe North MPP last Wednesday.
Brown is accused of sexual misconduct with two unnamed teenaged girls, one a high school student and the other a university student. Brown said the accusations are false and he will defend himself against them. He has not been charged.
The definition of sexual misconduct is far from clear. This newspap -
Ottawa researchers to study new approach to liver surgery and blood transfusions
France Todd was leading a busy, healthy life when a routine test during a checkup led to a diagnosis of early-stage liver cancer.
“I never felt ill,” she said. “It was very fortunate I had the physical at the right time. It was just one of those fluke things.”
Before she had surgery to remove a four-centimetre tumour, the Ottawa human resources executive was asked if she would participate in a pilot study aimed at reducing the need for blood transfusions after liver surge -

Police investigating after videos surface of man smashing cab window in Market
Ottawa police are investigating after videos surfaced of a man punching out the rear window of what appears to be a Blue Line taxi in the ByWard Market.
Police wouldn’t provide any details about the incident. However, videos shot by witnesses and posted to social media on Sunday show that a man became upset with a taxi driver travelling ahead of him, close to the restaurant Blue Cactus on Clarence Street and the ByWard Market Square.

Fitness tracking app not a security problem for Canadian military
The Pentagon is scrambling to figure out the operational security ramifications from the news on the weekend that fitness devices could be giving away the location of some of its secret bases.
An interactive map found online can show the locations and activities of people who use fitness devices such as Fitbit, raising security concerns about soldiers and other people who are at U.S. military bases in sensitive areas, the Associated Press pointed out in its article.

Sanderson and Maracle: Where is the federal government's Indigenous housing strategy?
After more than 20 years of the federal government staying out of the housing game, the release of Canada’s first-ever National Housing Strategy in November was largely celebrated by Canadians as a monumental step in the right direction. Our prime minister described it as a “robust, comprehensive, life-changing plan” representing a “once-in-a-generation vision.” The government’s key talking points focused on how the strategy would serve our nation’ -
Canadian firms could be in the running to repair F-35 parts – but will they succeed in such a bid?

Since Canada is still part of the F-35 program, Public Services and Procurement Canada is providing details to Canadian industry.
The US government wants information from the firms and whether they can do the job. Key criteria include: existing capability, ability to grow, and labour costs.

Kaplan: Trudeau's fact-flexible approach to globalization
Justin Trudeau’s speech last week to the World Economic Forum in Davos was one of the most striking attacks on economic globalization by a Canadian prime minister in recent memory.
Speaking of “the importance of progressive values in the context of globalization,” Trudeau was in full form as a tireless and righteous defender of the middle class.
In an astoundingly jaw-dropping display of his anti-corporatist worldview, Trudeau lectured his listeners on the apparent realities of -

The house, at 2243 Pagé Rd., near Innes Road and Orléans Boulevard, was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Take your pick of weather forecasts this week: Cloudy and cold, or bits of sun and colder
Don’t worry, the sun will return, but not until the weekend.
Environment Canada’s forecast for the week calls for lots of cloud and a bit of snow. Monday’s clouds will be accompanied by a seasonal high of -5 C and a low of -10 C, with a 30 per cent chance of flurries overnight, with 2 to 4 centimetres of snow expected by Tuesday afternoon.
The Weather Network, by comparison, is allowing for some sunny breaks Monday and Tuesday afternoon, but in exchange is lowering the mercury -

Pellerin: Political priorities from our people's panel
As political parties return to the House of Commons this week, prepare for the Liberals to highlight their accomplishments and agenda, while the opposition touts promises of its own. But what do the rest of us want the parties to focus on right now? Brigitte Pellerin turned to a group of Canadians recently featured in her “Politics for the rest of us” series, whose views span the spectrum. She asked them to explain, in a few words of their own, what they’d like to see: &nb -
Egan: Raw milk, raw deal? Farmer fined $1,500, quits milking operation
GOLDEN LAKE — The cattle have all disappeared, all 11 hoofing it into nearby woods — the Jerseys named Jade, Emilie, Isabelle and Jennifer, Beverly and Apple, and various heifer hangers-on — spooked by the sound of loudly crunching snow.
How now, brown cows, with your dark eyes and terrible timing?
“They’ll be back,” says farmer Michael Ilgert, 54, standing in the barnyard on a beautiful sunny day at his rolling 50-acre farm deep in Renfrew County. “They -

Prest and Tenove: Here's how to protect Canadian democracy in 2018
In 2017, the vulnerability of democracy around the world became painfully clear.
Canada seems an island of political stability, and yet we face many of the same risks as elsewhere. We use the same social media services that disseminate disinformation and foment hate. Our journalism sector is in crisis. We have seen populist attacks on visible minorities, Indigenous Canadians and other groups.
As Parliament begins its work in 2018, Canada’s politicians – and the rest of us – sho -
Ontario college strike aftermath continues to impact students, faculty
David Thomassin and his classmates in Algonquin College’s environmental technician program were ready to begin their shoreline naturalization project on Nov. 7.
They had conducted their research and picked out the shrubs they’d plant along the shoreline of Muskrat Lake near Cobden, but by the time they finished the necessary groundwork their project had been put in limbo.
The 2017 Ontario colleges strike stalled their project and, as the five-week strike dragged on, Thomassin an -
Police seek suspect who tried to lure girl, 13, in Old Ottawa South
A man tried to lure a 13-year-old girl on her way to school in Old Ottawa South into his car, police said Sunday.
They’re asking that witnesses or anyone who experienced something similar call investigators.
The girl reported that it happened at about 8:30 a.m. last Wednesday in the parking lot near the Brewer Arena.
The suspect seemed to be arranging something in the back seat of his car when he noticed her as she walked by. He got into his car and drove up to the girl and asked her -
U of O Law faculty takes to the ice for DIFD cause
Mental health issues are so rampant at Ontario high schools, a survey of principals termed it a crisis for students as well as guidance staff.
The scene at university campuses is similar, with one-fifth of post-secondary students dealing with anxiety, depression or other mental health concerns, according to a national study in 2016.
When a group of law students at the University of Ottawa decided to establish a charity event for their faculty, there was no doubt it would involve mental health.

Ottawa marks the first anniversary of Québec mosque shooting
Dozens of people clutching bright carnations gathered Sunday at the Kanata Recreation Complex for a multi-faith prayer of peace and remembrance for the six killed and 19 wounded when a gunman opened fire in a Québec City mosque during prayers on Jan. 29, 2017.
One by one, six schoolchildren rose and each read the name one of the dead as the victim’s smiling faces were projected on a screen: Mamadou Tanou Barry, Azzeddine Soufiane, Abdelkrim Hassane, Ibrahima Barry, Aboubaker Th
