  MONTREAL — Quebec’s provincial long-gun registry is set to come into effect on Monday — the first anniversary of the Quebec City mosque shooting.
  Public Security Minister Martin Coiteux told reporters on Sunday that gun owners will have one year to register their existing firearms through a “simple, quick, free” process that can be done online.

  A “temporary” closure of the Rideau Canal Skateway turned out to be a matter of hours with skaters back out there Sunday.
  Cédric Pelletier, a spokesman for the NCC, said that Saturday wasn’t as wet and sunny as expected and it was cool enough overnight to refreeze the ice surface.
  Crews were out checking the ice by 6 a.m. Sunday and deemed it safe for skating. Rougher sections were swept.

  Firefighters quickly doused a fire in an Overbrook home Sunday morning, but report that a family of six were displaced.
  They were called at 8:10 a.m. to a fire in a bedroom of the rowhouse at 223 Whitton Crescent.
  Fire crews arrived to find heavy smoke but with a “fast offensive attack” quickly had the fire knocked down and were overhauling in order to salvage the family’s possessions.

  The owner of a vehicle that went through the ice on the Ottawa River was located unharmed, Ottawa police said late Saturday night.
  A shoreline resident in Constance Bay had called 911 at 7:36 p.m. to report that the vehicle — reportedly a pickup truck — had sunk into the water near Greenland Road at Armitage Avenue. Police said the roof of the vehicle was still visible above the water.

  He was 71.

  A young Pontiac man is facing impaired driving charges after crashing his car, which then caught fire, into a Hydro-Québec pole that dropped live wires.
  The 19-year-old fled the crash at about 3:30 a.m. Saturday when police arrived on the scene on Principale Road East in Sainte-Cécile-de-Masham, near La Pêche.
  He was spotted on foot by firefighters two hours later. Firefighters had to wait for a hydro crew to cut power to the downed wires.
