The entire Rideau Canal Skateway will close Saturday at 11 p.m. due to expected rising temperatures over the weekend.
The full 7.8-km stretch from the National Arts Centre to Dow’s Lake will be closed to preserve the ice conditions as crews wait for temperatures to drop.
The National Capital Commission said Friday it plans to reopen the skateway as quickly as possible, weather permitting.
The NCC also reminds the public to refrain from venturing onto the skateway once it is closed.

Ottawa man charged with pimping, trafficking a minor
Police have arrested a 56-year-old Ottawa man and charged him with pimping and trafficking an underage girl.
Jalaledin Eftekhar has also been charged with assault, theft and obtaining sexual services from a minor following allegations in November that a girl was being groomed into the sex trade when she was 17. The alleged victim is now 20.
Eftekhar, who police said goes by the aliases Jonny, Jon Jon and Papa Jon, was arrested on Thursday without incident. Police believe there may be other alleg -

Voices: Children and Families Together Conference
Cindy Blackstock, executive director, First Nations Child and Family Caring Society
Blackstock noted the conference took place on the second anniversary of the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruling “a day we thought the world had changed for First Nations children — that they would finally get the culturally based equity and services they deserved. That didn’t happen.
“We continue to come up with answers at forums like this. Youths speak. Elders speak. The recommendations -
Money set aside to repair HMCS Sackville
The federal government will contribute up to $3.5 million to the Canadian Naval Memorial Trust for extensive repairs to HMCS Sackville.
As Canada’s oldest warship and the sole remaining Flower-class corvette, HMCS Sackville is an important part of Royal Canadian Navy history, according to the federal government.
HMCS Sackville has been owned by the non-profit Canadian Naval Memorial Trust since the 1980s, operating seasonally on the Halifax waterfront as Canada&rsq -
Former hostage Joshua Boyle faces more charges, including sex assault
Joshua Boyle, the former Afghanistan hostage who was rescued along with his family after five years of apparent captivity, is facing new criminal charges in Ottawa — including sexual assault with ropes, attacking someone with a broomstick and criminal harassment.
Boyle, 34, was arrested by Ottawa police in late December on 15 criminal charges, including sexual assault, forcible confinement and administering a noxious drug. Boyle, the son of an Ottawa judge, was also charged with misleading -

'Racism, discrimination' to blame for high numbers of Indigenous children in care: Minister
The shockingly high numbers of Indigenous children in foster care and group homes are the products long-standing racism and discrimination, Canada’s minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs says.
Carolyn Bennett said social workers and agencies must give a “second thought” before taking an Indigenous child from his or her family.
“Every agency has to ask themselves the question before apprehending, is there something else that can be done?” Bennet -
Captured Outaouais suspects stole enough to open a flea market
There wasn’t much these thieves wouldn’t steal.
Blankets, for instance: Thieves who broke into a series of homes in Notre-Dame-de-la-Salette and L’Ange-Gardien since last May stole blankets, and sheets too.
Also the following, as listed by MRC des Collines Police: “food, personal items, clothes (men’s and women’s), kitchen items, furniture, bedding, blankets; in brief, household items normally found in a residence. In addition to these non-conventional it -
This (flower) power couple have recorded more than 200 species in Gatineau Park
In all the wonder of Gatineau Park, it always struck Gwynneth Evans and Tom Delsey as odd that there was so little information for visitors about what flowers grow beside the trails.
The two friends from Ottawa, both retired from Library and Archives Canada, have spent many years walking and cross-country skiing in the park.
Now, they are nearing the end of a personal project that echoes the private work of many Canadians in past generations: They have made an extensive database of what gro -
Kurl: As Parliament resumes, guess who Trudeau's biggest rival may be?
Parliament resumes Monday – something that’s escaped the notice of fully two-thirds of Canadians. This may demoralize political writers, political watchers and indeed politicians themselves, but they’ll cheer right up given the opportunity to once more examine or participate in the House of Commons for signs of shifting political winds this pre-election year.
For a while now, the Trudeau government has been spending political capital on both deliberate decisions (think of the a -

Ballet review: Nijinsky production a feast for the senses
NijinskyNational Ballet of CanadaFeaturing the NAC OrchestraUntil Jan. 27, Southam Hall, National Arts Centre
John Neumeier’s rendition of Nijinsky is not the kind of fairy-tale ballet that inspires children to dress up in tutus and glitter.Instead, it’s a psychological study that dives into the mind of a tortured genius, portraying the highs and lows of mental illness through the discipline of contemporary dance. The full-length piece is challenging, complex and ambitious, but under -

Remembering Tommy Banks
The Edmonton Journal reports here that the revered jazz pianist and former senator Tommy Banks died Thursday. The Calgary-born, Edmonton-based Banks was 81, and he succumbed to leukemia.
A teen prodigy, Banks was widely known as the star of The Tommy Banks Show, a variety show that ran between 1968 and 1974 and later from 1980 to 1983. The short list of his awards and decorations would his Juno and Gemini awards and that he was named an Officer of the Order of Canada and a recipient of the Alber -
Dawson: The young lead the old on sex work law reform
Well, at least the Young Liberals of Canada have their heads screwed on right: They’re pushing the rest of their federal party to discuss decriminalization of prostitution at the party’s convention in April.
Utopian the young may be, but at least their vision is unimpaired by the cataracts of political palatability. Really, is there any other explanation for the unforgivable sloth shown on this file? Canadians, too, are unforgivably quiet. While mouths foamed angrily over electoral r -

Builder Greatwise Developments has finally hit the jackpot with its struggling infill property near Baseline and Greenbank roads.

The final 50 or so lots in the 90-lot development of freehold townhomes are available as of Jan. 27.

It might be just a little too soon to pop the champagne corks, however. Patrick Brown’s resignation as Progressive Conservative leader does dramatically alter the dynamics of June’s election, but it isn&rsq -

Brown resigned abruptly early Thursday morning following allegations of sexual misconduct, less than five months before a provincial election. In an interview Thursday, MacLeod said her party’s leader did the right thing in stepping down, and she appreciated the courage of the two women who came forward.
